Like many here...my father is long gone from this world. I have a hard time listening to this beautiful song as it always brings me to tears and regret that I didn't do more for him during his lifetime and didn't clean up my side of the street better. .

Dan Fogelberg wrote this song as an homage to his father, who was, in fact, a band leader. In this, one of his last appearances, (he would later pass away from prostate cancer) he stated that if he could only write one song in his life, it would be this one. It is my favorite of his and I keep it my current set of songs I can perform, especially with an acoustic guitar.
