Little more retarded than normal…. I finally talked myself putting money down on an m40a1 clone from GAP. Unless I find the correct scope/base I am going to use a Leupold mark 4 hd4-18 scope as a place holder so I can shoot it/see what it can do.

I’m assuming the scope mounting holes are still using 6-48 screws.

I’m thinking just going with a badger base and rings but wanted to see what other suggestions are out there. Scope is big so I am worried about issues with base/screws.

Properly torqued, you shouldn't have problems with the base screws. I ran a TT 525 on a 700pss for three plus years and had no issues with the 6-48 screws. Used a Nightforce 20moa base.

To give you an idea of my level of use/abuse with that set-up. I rarely kept that rifle in the case I bought for it. Just had one of those nylon scope/crown covers so the scope didn't get marred up. Kept the 700 leaned up against a wall in a closet for convenience because I go to the range at least two/three times a month. I took care to make sure it isn't precariously leaning up against anything to avoid it from falling over onto the scope. Driving to and from the range, the rifle rode on the back seat of the truck (or back floor when it was clean) for a 20 mile trip on a not so smooth paved road every other weekend, so the rifle endured a lot of road vibration while traveling. My shooting is usually done from prone, tripod or offhand positional. I don't use a scope as a carry handle, but I do use a sling for carry, so walking to and from the truck and down range from 100-400yds each time to check/change targets; the rifle was with me bouncing off my hip, back, or chest depending on how I had it slung. If that sounds about like your routine, you will be fine. If you plan on hiking miles into the back country on hunting expeditions, doing real snipery shit, or loading your ammo as hot as the case heads will allow, you might want to consider having the action re-drilled/tapped for 8-40 screws.

I look for a rail or mount with recoil lug. Have never had a problem with 6/48 screws with a lugged rail .

MDT and NF are 2 that I have had no issues with, both have decent recoil lugs .

I have had screws break on a EGW rail , no lug.
