Little more retarded than normal…. I finally talked myself putting money down on an m40a1 clone from GAP. Unless I find the correct scope/base I am going to use a Leupold mark 4 hd4-18 scope as a place holder so I can shoot it/see what it can do.

I’m assuming the scope mounting holes are still using 6-48 screws.

I’m thinking just going with a badger base and rings but wanted to see what other suggestions are out there. Scope is big so I am worried about issues with base/screws.

Properly torqued, you shouldn't have problems with the base screws. I ran a TT 525 on a 700pss for three plus years and had no issues with the 6-48 screws. Used a Nightforce 20moa base.

To give you an idea of my level of use/abuse with that set-up. I rarely kept that rifle in the case I bought for it. Just had one of those nylon scope/crown covers so the scope didn't get marred up. Kept the 700 leaned up against a wall in a closet for convenience because I go to the range at least two/three times a month. I took care to make sure it isn't precariously leaning up against anything to avoid it from falling over onto the scope. Driving to and from the range, the rifle rode on the back seat of the truck (or back floor when it was clean) for a 20 mile trip on a not so smooth paved road every other weekend, so the rifle endured a lot of road vibration while traveling. My shooting is usually done from prone, tripod or offhand positional. I don't use a scope as a carry handle, but I do use a sling for carry, so walking to and from the truck and down range from 100-400yds each time to check/change targets; the rifle was with me bouncing off my hip, back, or chest depending on how I had it slung. If that sounds about like your routine, you will be fine. If you plan on hiking miles into the back country on hunting expeditions, doing real snipery shit, or loading your ammo as hot as the case heads will allow, you might want to consider having the action re-drilled/tapped for 8-40 screws.

Look for a rail or mount with recoil lug.
Two spring to mind (there are probably others).

Near Manufacturing IMHO is the best (edit: has a lug). Go to TRG42.com, find his number, and call him. He’s old school and has a creaky wesite, but he’s a master. Lives in Canada.

Nightforce is the other one that I know about that has a lug.

I’ll look to see in all my scattered parts, I might have an early Leupold or Redfield scope base. If I have one and definitely don’t cross your fingers because I can’t remember having one for years (Plenty for XP-100’s but they are all mounted and won’t fit anyway) but I’ll look and if I find one, its yours. (Free, this is not a back door sale) We can work out the shipping. @Rob01 check on this to make sure. If a problem I’ll delete it.

Seeking has lug and makes top quality stuff. Same goes for the nightforce but there are two diffrent bases from nightforce. The standard duty base does not have a lug and the extreme duty does. Granted unless the screws comes loose the friction between the base and action should be enough to keep it from moving. I have never had a nonlug base come loose on me but I am careful not to over tighten the fasteners and I use clear nail polish to lock the threads. I am also careful to make sure none of the base screws bottom out in the hole before clamping down the base. I have sevral kinds of bases. Weaver, EGW, Nightforce ED, seekins, and LaRue. NF ED, and Seekins would be my first two choices.

I replaced the weavers and egws....
