Looking for something sub $1k with a 30mm tube, FFP, 24-30 top magnification. Already have a couple NX8’s like them but don’t want to spend that kind of money. Want to swap out an old VX3 8-25 target scope on a 6br but want to use the Kelby rings it’s mounted in. Looking at the Athlon Ares gen3, but looking for suggestions.

How would that compare to the Ares?

The Ares, Midas, and Helos are really on par when it comes to optical quality and are all surprisingly good for chinesium.

I’d just get the Midas and save the $$, their illumination is about worthless anyway. In all 5 of the samples I’ve had it was daylight bright on the lowest setting and the knob is pretty stiff.

I have the nx8 4-32x50 & the athlon ares btr gen2 hd 4.5-27x50 now, and had the viper pst gen2, and I thought the pst viper edged it out JUST BARELY in clarity and turret feel but thats obviously subjective based on your eyes, personal preference and the range you'll be shooting at. If you have good eyes, and will be inside of 800m (for my eyes) (and I think you will be with a 6br), I feel the Athlons will work out. If you cant find one used here for a good price i'd go directly to expertvoice or eurooptic and get a gen 3 for 629. I think they're good values.

Midway has a great deal on the Vortex Gen II PST 5-25 for $599! MOA or Mil.

Almost put that in the cart, but then I looked at the reticle, the MRAD version was the 2D I think, it only had .5 mil markings and I could have lived with that but I’ve gotten so spoiled with a floating center dot and it just had cross hairs. Most of the Athlons have center dot, so I may go that route.

SWFA 10X. Especially the new gen2 and the tree reticle

Think the Midas Tac is an excellent option for the price!

Agreed. I’ve owned all 3. When the Ares came out, it was great, but Athlon had just joined the scene and was making waves and the Vortex PSTII was the closest thing at the time. There are things I liked better about the Ares at the time.

The Ares is ok for the money, but I do not think it is worth the extra money either. I do think the Midas Tac 6-24 is very good for the money and know people that use them in comps… no illum as stated. I have used the Helos BTR as well, and it was nice for the money as well. The Midas Tac is what I usually recommend down near that price range.
