Hey all, I'm looking for some advice on factory offerings for 6.5 Creedmoor. I've shot 2 regional matches and 1 pro series match with Hornady 140 ELDMs, but ran into some dope issues that cost me some points. I should've adjusted but the moment got to me. Chrono'd the next stage and had SD near 20 and ES over 50. I shoot out West so I typically will see targets past 1000 yards in most matches.

Is there anything comparable at the same price point? Not able to get into reloading at this point. Looking at Norma 130 GT, Federal, etc.

26" 1:8 twist barrel.

I am new to PRS and long range overall. Started in February this year shooting only factory ammo. First barrel was a proof prefit for my Zeus. 1-8 twist. It only liked 147 ELD-M's. I switched to a 7.5 twist in a Patriot valley arms/Osprey Barrel Works barrel and it loved Berger factory 144 ammo. I moved to CRB custom cut barrel and it shoots better than I can shoot it. .3 groups at best so far. The 7.5 twist barrel really makes Hornady 147 ELD and 140's shine. Best though was the factory berger 144.
I saved all the brass. 2000 hornady factory cases and 800 Lapua LRP factory for reloading like I do now. Case of Hornady factory 140's was $397 at ammo.com and factory Berger 144 was $500 at Eurooptic.com. The federal GMM 140 with the berger bullets did not perform well in my Proof and I never tried it again.

Sig elite otm ammo shoots VERY consistently in my rifle. Also, barnes 120gr match burners. Oddly, both have about a 2" different impact area if shooting the same dot- but are a consistent tight group that can be adjusted for on my scope.
Barrel harmonics are wierd.

Berger is putting out some of the most consistent factory ammo available (outside of boutique manufacturers) in my opinion. It's pricey, but I'd happily spend the extra $50 a case or so especially at the pro series level. Plus, at the end you get Lapua brass that you can either sell to recoup some cost, or you have a really good brass if you ever decide to reload your own.

There was an extremely relevant PRB entry just a few days back: Here.

If you haven't already, go through his other articles on statistics, factory ammo, etc.

Your 26" 1:8 twist will easily stabilize a Berger 153.5 LRHT at your elevation in Utah, and unless you're planning on travelling to the coast to shoot a Pro series match at sea level, would be worthy of consideration. Be careful about any stability calcualtor that assumes Sea Level - you aren't. I know AB Quantum used to assume that on the first screen, but updated as soon as you got into your solution and gave it your altitude.

In addition to agreeing with the AB custom curve extremely well in my experience, the 153.5 will give you a much more forgiving wind bracket on target in a Western style match.

The downsides are recoil (you're already tolerating 6.5 Creedmoor, this will be just a pinch more) and cost. Factory Berger loaded 153.5 is around $2.30/rd and the high end loadings that I linked to above are closer to $3.00/rd. That said, if you're not going to be reloading, then I would go for something like Eagle Eye and not look back. The factory Berger loaded ammo can be good, but some lots are just average - they're not that consistent in my experience. Sell the brass when you're done.

If you end up liking the 153.5 and still want to shoot 6.5 Creedmoor after shooting out this barrel and are tempted by those coastal matches, go for a slightly faster twist for your next barrel. It's not hard to get a 1:7.5 or even a 1:7 twist with a little waiting.

What did the chrono say before the match when you were getting data? Same temp and elevation as the match? What exactly was the dope issue?

Your barrel length or twist are not a problem. I have shot 8 twist barrels with my Creedmoor since 2008. Shooting 153 ATips now in my 8 twist and never an issue with 140 or 147 ELDs so no need to change you barrel twist.

Good morning. I found some older sessions in my garmin chronograph app.
I’m no expert and learning everyday. Happy to help with anything. Pls reach out if I can help.
Please know that these configurations and results are unique to my rifle system. Always follow your equipment’s and ammo maker’s guidance on usage and load development.
One note: the 7.5t resulted in a +1.85 stabilization of my 144’s and 140’s.

Here’s the factory 147 in my 26” proof:

Here’s fed GMM 130’s in the proof:

Here’s when I started to reload Berger 144’s as my match loads in my CRB 26”7.5T:

Here’s the Berger 140’s hand-loads I use as training and backup match loads:

I had wildly unacceptable results with 6.5CM 153.5 Bergers at sea level in an 8 twist.

Do not recommend, you need a faster twist at low elevations to ensure the bullets will be stable. All the local guys that shoot them I’ve talked to are running 7.5tw.

Maybe with the Bergers but not the 153 ATips. They shoot fine in 8 twist at sea level in cold and hot weather.

I did a video a long time ago on 6.5 CM off the shelf compared to my hand loading. It's out of date now, but might give you an idea of what to look for in a comparison. Bad thing is to do that same comparison today would cost me about $400!

Is this the Norma ammo you are referring to?
That's what I shot in my 6cm. Probably shot 7 or 8 matches with it. I never missed a target due to that ammo, and could buy it for just over $1 per round. It would be my recommendation.

Oh yeah, and the brass is pretty good. I have reloaded some of them 6 times without issue.

Going to shoot this at a one day Saturday. Regional big box store is $23.00 for a box of 20.

I had just been truing my MV using the AB custom curve and a target around 800 yards. Zero'd and validated data the previous morning at the match site. I think I had a different lot sneak into my packed ammo, and this lot was wildly more inconsistent than the lot I had been shooting all day. Zero'd two stages in a row, then got back to hitting what I expected to once back to original lot that I used for the other 18 stages.

I have watched this video a few times over the past few years, you are a wealth of knowledge and a truly positive influence in this space. Great data and part of the reason I'm looking at other solutions besides the often-recommended Hornady match stuff.
