M40 front sling swivel question

All,
I wonder if someone may have a picture of the escutcheon that the front sling swivel on a M40 screws into? Preferably separated from the stock, I know I'm asking for unobtainium but it's worth a shot. I might know what Remington used but need to see a real one from an M40 to confirm or disprove my idea.

Is this a the correct front sling swivel used on the M40? I know the loop is not the correct size, but the rest seems to check out. 7/32x40 thread, and the escutcheon looks right.

Is this what you're looking for? I purchased these about 10 yrs ago. View attachment 8741234View attachment 8741235
Andy,
Those are for the M40A1, I have been trying to find a picture of the front swivel for the M40 and so far have been unsuccessful. The swivel in my picture is from a Remington 725 stock, I thought I read somewhere that Remington used "in house" parts and thought it made sense. Just hoping someone could verify if this was in fact the correct swivel arrangement. I'm sure the swivel and euscheon are right, just not sure about the other piece that goes on the shank and keeps the swivel from digging into the stock

Is there actually enough meat in the forend for that escutcheon
Yes. How this set up was done is the knurled portion goes in the barrel channel, then the other "top hat" shaped piece is inlet into the bottom of the fore end. When you install the swivel and tighten everything up it the two parts keep the swivel from digging into the wood.

So am I to understand that the escutcheon is two pieces and the swivel is separate (3 piece assembly)?

Got it. I was under the impression that the shouldered stud was inletted into the stock - hmmmm. Thanks for the clarification. Are there any dimensions on the tophat (bottom)?

Does the shouldered part of the stud sit proud of the stock?
1) Yes 3 pieces
2) A quick drawing, not to scale.

3) No it sits flush (top hat shaped piece) with the bottom of the fore end.

Please keep this in mind, this came out of a stock for a Remington 725 so I cannot verify 100% this is what was used on the M40. Hoping one of the forum experts may chime in with a yes or no. From a few pictures I have seen here, I believe this is what was used.

It is not a three piece set up. It's just a tapered nut with a reeded edge. The tapered nut is put into the barrel channel, and the front sling swivel screws into the nut from the underside of the stock.

Wichita actually made a run of reproduction M40 front sling swivel nuts to go with their M40A1 front sling swivels (since guys have been incorrectly using these A1 swivels on their M40 builds). The Wichita set is on the left, and the original USMC M40 takeoff set is on the right.

I'm working on restoring a Navy M700/M40 using and original stock and have been fortunate to have Ryan N. pointing me in the right direction. Too bad he stepped away from the forum. He would have dropped a ton of info and pics in here.

I've noticed many member's photos showing the swivel sitting proud of the stock, one would "assume" that the flat on the underside of the swivel would be flush with the stock, but does it? BTW, thanks for the pictures and explanation

Johnny V,
I have seen a post in the past that eluded to the fact there was a metal sleeve in the stock to keep the sling swivel from digging into the stock. It is just another thing I was never able to verify, but I may do just that on my clone to prevent damage to the wood.
