Suppressors Baffle erosion DT vs brake

Just how much does a brake help prevent baffle erosion?

I’m using the area 419 mounts for a few suppressors but have recently started to think a brake might be a nice thing to have.

Is it a waste of money to switch to xeno? Then it mounts to a taper unlike the area 419 and still has left hand threads.

I see more and more folks talk about running DT on bolt guns but I get nervous about it coming loose.

I have zero concerns about baffle erosion and I have 2k round through nomad l on 419 mounts with a 18” 300 win mag.

I would not go to xeno from 419. Seems like an expense for zero gain - the 419 is very very repeatable from my testing

The Area 419 Hellfire, which is what I’m converting my bolt guns over to, has an O ring that seems to make it fairly impossible to come loose. Something for me to keep an eye on in the future though.

I use Surefire Brakes on all of my ARs. I originally used them in my bolt guns too but there are too many better options in suppressors other SF for bolt guns. The only suppressors I don’t plan on converting over to the Hellfire are the AB Raptors because I like the reflex chamber too much to take them off.

Brakes “might” help over a DT but honestly, most bolt guns aren’t seeing the volume of fire than an AR will so for all practical purpose, it won’t matter. You will shoot out the barrel long before you hurt the blast chamber.

I think is just my boredom wanting a new project. I think you’re right about it being an expense for no gain.

I agree with you about the area 419 system. I’m not sure if the o ring keeps it tight or just keeps gas from getting back to the mating surface. Regardless, I’ve never had one come loose while shooting.

I have never worried on bolt guns, but I can speak to the benefits of a “sacrificial” break on hard use SBRs. My original work gun was a 10” 556 and I ran an AAC can at the time. Speaking with their guys at SHOT they recommended running their break instead of flash hider or direct thread options as the break acts as a sacrificial baffle of sorts, so I did. That rifle saw lots of hard use in classes, training, etc. Tens of thousands of rounds. I replaced the break when the bore was 30 cal instead of 223….which happened several times. Can stayed in good shape. That has been my practice for hard-use SBRs since then…..though I’ve recently given a direct thread printed inconel can a try on a 12” gun. Maker dared me to break it.

It depends on how much and how fast you shoot along with a bunch of other factors.

For example shooting a 10" machine gun will induce a lot more erosion than just slow(er) fire.

Heat and abrasion definitely will have an effect over time but most modern suppressors can be shot tens of thousands of rounds under normal conditions. Think 40 to 50k rounds for most folks can be easily attainable (or more like 100k) but if you shoot it with a machine gun it's reduced by a lot.

So yes a brake will help but if you are shooting $75 to $100k worth of ammo you can probably get a new supressor if needed.

The real issue in my mind is the mount type. If it's going to be more secure in attaching the can to the barrel that is worth it all by itself.
