I am about to order another barreled action, which company of these two has the better barrel?

PVA or Straight Jacket?

I currently have 2 PVA barreled actions and both are lasers but have not tried SJA. They offer similar options.

So both will chamber a great barrel, have you picked a barrel manufacturer? PVA will chamber your blank or their own brand. Straight Jacket will chamber any blank you send them. I have not tried a barrel from PVA but everything I hear is great. I have one barrel from Straight Jacket and it is a hammer (CRB blank).

I've had several pva barrels and they've all shot great, osprey blanks and rock creek. Never had a straight jacket barrel, but seems there was a thread a yr or so ago where their threads wrecked a cdg action.
Yeah, I remember that. Well, it was their threads and perhaps a bit of a ham handed owner twisting the shit out of threads that didn't mate properly. And...er, not sure if he used any sort of anti-seize on it.

Yep, there was some contributing factors also, that I forgot. I do remember Ted at ARC went above and beyond to make owner whole, ill remember that when I action shop!

If you’re curious/ bored and want the absolute best gunsmith:

Alex Wheeler
LRI
Altus
I have been really wanting to try a K&P. Spoke to LRI recently about doing one because they partner with K&P but they don’t do pre-fits. Not even for the super common stuff like 737’s. They also cost more than a PVA pre-fit. I can send one of my 737s to them for the first barrel but I don’t feel like parting with one right now. I have heard nothing but good things though.

They told me they would cut my impact without it in hand. Might want to double check, this was just a few months ago

I'm happy to help out, PVA pioneered the idea of the shouldered prefit in this industry and we've been doing Impacts since 2016 or 17, it's been such a long time that I don't recall. The shouldered prefit IS our wheelhouse. Lately SJA has been buying some Osprey blanks so it's possible you're going to get the same blank either way you go, they have shown to cut a good barrel. Anything outside of that on customer service concerns that others mentioned isn't something I can speak with any authority but their owner is on this forum and stops in to touch base with customers.

It would probably surprise more than a few folks on here to know just how many prefits that come out of PVA for other companies... We aren't cutting prefits for SJA since someone called to ask. To my knowledge they do all their own chambering work.

If you're still looking for a place, we can handle it without issue and we have the blanks here. One stop shop.

Most of our barrels are not PVA barrels, only a special few with a certain twist and fluting. We are happy to spin you up whatever you would like with Bartein, CRB, Shilen, Benchmark or any other we carry. We do have some barrels in stock including some bartleins.

And to the post of last year, out of the 1000's of barrels we do, there was an issue with one which we made whole, and there was a very big backstory to that. Those are pretty good odds and our customer service and warranties are second to none.

The CRB that you spun up for me is a champ, well pleased customer here.

When Nick Arnold ran SJA it was an absolute shit show(current management is likely better, but that company is dead to me due to mis-dealings). Of those two PVA all day! There are many excellent smith's out there who can prefit a barrel for you.

Manzella Precision
TS Customs
Black Canyon Arms
ATeam Precision

Just to name a few......
