Any idea what this new policy is in a nutshell?
Reason for the new policy
  • The Pentagon, under Secretary Hegseth, framed the changes as a security measure to prevent leaks and protect national security.
  • Hegseth claimed the new rules were "common sense" and necessary because the press was "disruptive".
  • Some of the specific changes included requiring reporters to sign a 21-page agreement that replaced a simple one-page safety protocol form.

Key provisions rejected by journalists
  • Unauthorized information: The new policy required journalists to refrain from reporting on any information—even if unclassified—that had not been officially authorized for public release by the Pentagon.
  • Soliciting information: It specifically warned reporters against "soliciting or encouraging government employees to break the law" by providing confidential information. Media lawyers argued this would functionally criminalize routine newsgathering.
  • Security risk designation: Journalists could be deemed a "security or safety risk" and have their credentials revoked if they violated the rules. This provision gave the Pentagon wide discretion to punish reporters for conduct it deemed "unprofessional".
  • Escorted movement: It tightened escort procedures, restricting journalists from moving around the building unescorted, a shift from past traditions.

Any idea what this new policy is in a nutshell?
I think this is the gist of the policy:

The policy requires journalists to acknowledge new rules on press access, including that they could be branded security risks and have their Pentagon press badges revoked if they ask department employees to disclose classified and some types of unclassified information.
