Your "Inventory..." How did it get that way?

It happens in every hobby. I've only got it mild in guns, but I was a mainlining junkie in high end audio. You think guns be bad expensive? How about 35K for a phono cartridge. Then you need a 30K tone arm, on a 250K turntable. Now on to phono stage, preamp, amps, cabeling, and speakers. In idiot can easily drop a million. And not be guaranteed good sound. @XikoPlavi

Yeah. Audio is crazy stupid. Clear Audio cartridges (some say) are really just overpriced AT (audio technica) junk. I will stick with Lyra, Soundsmith and air-tight. There are some that are 20k but ive never seen the clear audio jubilee this much. This is a Chinese scam probably.

Look up SAT tonearms and turntable.

VAC tube mono blocks.

Stupid money. It’s ridiculous.

I will admit though that I have 125k in my entire system.

BUT, it also sucks to be poor 😏

And, yeah if it doesn’t sound good you dont know how to properly match your components.

Clear Audio is junk IMO. Hahaha.

This forum is what cost me a lot of money (inventory), I thought I was happy varminting with my Rem 40xb rangemaster. Somewhere around 2014 I got the 260 "Master Race" AI religion. Then .243 followed up by 6br and finally dasher. Plus it's easier to buy another AI and S&B and outfit it in another caliber so I don't have to waste time on the quick change barrel system. Suppressed AWSM, don't get me started. Area419, AMP - stay out of the reloading pages.

Was in Colorado two weeks ago shooting pdogs with the dasher. It's pretty much cheating. So this forum and associated costs have brought me joy.

I wouldn't call it junk, just over priced. Way over priced. AT is good stuff. Best cart I've had was a Transfiguration Proteus with the diamond cantilever. The openness and air were the best I've heard.

I buy what I need when I find a need.

Selling is silly, because I'll want to go back to doing whatever it was I was doing again.

PRS rifles
Rimfire match rifles
Deer rifles
Elk rifles
Prairie dog rifles
Defense rifles
Sporting clays shotguns
Waterfowl shotguns
Upland bird shotguns
Plinking pistols
Competition pistols
Revolvers

I have two sons. So I can't ever get away with just 1 as the two of them need something to join in on the hobby.

I was always nice to the grumpy old retired ex police dog handler who still worked as a civilian at the police station I worked at.

He used to run a small police museum at another police station before it was turned into office spaces and all the museum guns went into storage for about 15 years.
He found out that I was a collector and gave all the guns to me because I had the right licences for the machine guns and pistols.

Overnight, my collection increased by a Thompson M1A1 and a Reising Mod 55 SMG, a couple of dozen pistols, including a 1917 DWM Luger, a P38, a 1914 made Colt 1911 commercial model and a 4" S&W Model 12 Airweight. A 1972 made Ruger Single Six was in almost mint condition.

Having legally owned sawn off shotguns and cut down rifles is very unusual in New Zealand and always attract comments when I occasionally show them at collector's meets.

A couple of rifles, including a BRNO 601 .223 bolt action that was the NZ Police issue rifle for a while in the 1970s, and a sporterised Lee Enfield .303 that was taken as payment by a lawyer who (unsuccessfully) defended the previous owner on a murder charge and later donated the rifle to the museum when he was a High Court Judge.

Some of the guns were previously exhibits in terrible crimes and my wife would be horrified if she knew the stories behind them.

I agree about audio. Back when I was growing up, Dad had to have the latest audio stuff. TEAC reel to reel tape machine, Tandberg receiver, I forget the turntable brand but direct drive, etc.) and of course "Ohm Model F speakers (the cones that were omni-directional). All stereo. I admit they sounded great, but they did draw a lot of power. He upgraded them to a pair of "Walsh-4s." (IYKYK) That was the biggest deal, back then. They drew so much power, he had to upgrade to the latest Pioneer Receiver that could put out the power for it.

Fast forward to present day, and those Walsh-4s sit in my garage (preserved/covered of course, waiting for someone to buy them), but there they sit. Along came "Quadraphonic" mode and then, soon after, 5.1 "Surround Sound: and then 7.1 "Surround Sound", Digital CD recordings (remember DDD), etc. etc. etc. I have an Onkyo 5.1 Surround sound system NIB, but I can't use it effectively as my house is way too small for it. Maybe if I get a bigger house, someday. And then, the headphones. Bose QC2s were the "in" thing. And this is coming from a Sony alumnus! Admittedly, Akio Morita did give props to Dr. Bose when I once had a private audience with him (whenever he visited the PRNJ, he'd eat in the cafeteria with the employees and let an employee have lunch with him on occasion). To be fair, Sony did have the "Budo-Kahn" headset, but you had to use the player that came with them. That was way too expensive back then, and they didn't last very long in the market.

All that said, if you really want to talk "stupid crazy," consider the evolution of the "PC." The mainframe computer power I used in HS, could fit 20 times in the Android on my hip. HAL9000 would be retired, now. Kier Dullea would say in his commentary that HAL would be reduced to a Laptop these days.

Stupid Crazy, indeed!

Do you still have the TEAC r2r? Did you dad have original r2r albums or did he just buy recordable tapes and record records on to the tapes? If you have any OG r2r official copies (1970s) that would be cool and you may be able to make some money off them. R2r is a super nice market these days, but people do use them.

Unfortunately, no. He kept that. Not sure where it is, now. And we never bought original tapes, we always copied and ripped from LPs, etc. Less wear and tear on the vinyl.

Funny... I'm aware of the surge in the old Vinyl market in the same was as R2R. Believe it or not, I actually stilll have an old Lafayette Radio Electronics brand R2R portable that my Mom gave me. It still works. But I haven't used it in years. I think I digitized what I had on R2R onto MP3 etc.

That's one of the reasons why I stopped at 5.1 Surround and didn't go to 7.1. Not very much native content available on 7.1. Not worth it. Plenty enough on 5.1.

R2R is the best sound but very limited availability. Try getting Iron Butterfly Live, and absolutely amazing recording, on R2R. I have it on vinyl and on my Technics SP10 Mk II it will surprise you.

I m surely NOT going down the r2r rabbit hole abyss BUT id love to be able to spend time listening to someones.

The modern produced r2r that people talk up is a Revoxx. That is like 20k new.

Anyway, Rhino Records is doing a series just announced of releasing true original master copies from true original soundmix.

If that r2r works id try it out if I were you. Even if his dad has his still im sure it needs major work.

Yeah, seeing the price on the SAT gear was a big contributor to me losing interest in audio. It's like chasing a cloud or a rainbow. I now have a very modest system and enjoy it just as much. An AT-9 I got a deal on for about $450 and it sounds just fine.
