A government operating way outside its original boundaries and working to subvert the will of the people doesn't seem much better.
I think the Executive Branch should use this opportunity to DRAMATICALLY REDUCE the size of the Federal government. RIF entire departments. Perfect excuse as "no money" so reduce the government. No foreign aide. No UN funding. No WHO funding. No Department of Education. No grants to cities/states.
Serious? Tell your idiot friend don't do drugs. Nothing good would come from declaring martial law over the annual gov shutdown.

I hear talk of them invoking the "nuclear option" to get the govt. open again. They really need to be careful with that. Both sides can do it when in power, respectively. I can see if for SCOTUS confirmations but not for something less important.

Regarding a political solution: we should end the filibuster and pass the CR. Time is short and we need to play by dirty dem rules to fix what the biden regime intentionally damaged. We can't be concerned with near future "what ifs" when we're trying to save our republic.
If a political solution fails- the only thing left is politics by other means, and that's unthinkable.

The entire point of the U.S. Government, as set up by the founders, was to MAKE IT HARD for the Government to get anything done. To place a high bar on their meddling in the lives of Americans.
The things that have totally destroyed that vision....
-- Rampant federalism (yeah, we fought a civil war over that... sort of.) The result was rampant federalism.
-- The allowing of legislation from the bench. Activist judiciary since the 1960's has been a major issue. The Judiciary is supposed to apply the law as written and interpret the law ONLY under the guidance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Not make social policy.
-- The allowing of the bureaucracy to 'regulate' laws into action. That were not passed by Congress. Every Regulation passed down by some agency is a de-facto law and should NEVER be permitted.
-- The allowing of a national Debt and federal annual deficit. I actually am OK with the idea of a National Debt with reason. Bonds have always been a way to bring in money without taxes, because they are voluntary, safe and pay interest. Printing more currency is stealing from every American who saves. (And forget the "Gold Standard" there is not enough gold on the planet to run our economy with 'gold dollars.' The reserve system is a must. As long as it is under control.
-- The elimination of the 60-vote margin in the Senate. This allows shit to get through without a high bar. The whole point of the majority/supermajority was to advise and consent... and COMPROMISE. Which is what America was built on. Without compromise, things don't happen, which is good. With compromise, each side must work together to get things through that both can reasonably agree on. Reflecting a real advise and consent.
And I won't even get started on the Jacksonian Democracy... which removed a roadblock from the Rabble electing a President (or other senior officials). Look up how Jackson (The Trump of his day) changed the system, along with a few influencers, to get elected when he NEVER would have gotten through the old system. That was when we went from a Republic to Two Wolves and a Sheep voting on dinner. Were I king for a day, I'd reinstate the pre-Jacksonion system AND mandate that every state have an electoral college, to prevent a tiny urban pinprick from ruling a massive geographic area. THAT was Jeffersonian democracy. Because he knew that urbanizaton was poison and that if the cities controlled America it would be doomed.

Run through the 'causes' on here too many times to type again. You are right... slavery was not "The" cause. But was one of the root causes that fueled a lot of the 'immediate' 1860 causes... made either a beaceful bifurcation, a Civil War or a very nasty congressional fight inevitable. Americans chose war, expecting a 2 week campaign with lots of glory and marching home to girlfriends with it all settled in a happy little pageant. It didn't end well.
As Shelby Foote said, the whole slavery issue was because at the Constitutional Convention, Americans could not do what they do best... Compromise. Both sides knew the issue had to be dealt with. But they kicked the can down the road. Knowing that it would not end well.
I think it was Ben Franklin who said that slavery was "Like having a wolf by the ears. You don't like it, but you don't dare let go."

Change the rules and ignore the courtesies of the Senate because "we" will be too civilized to do the same? Check.
