Hunting & Fishing New 300wsm hunting rifle needs setup. Help on ammo

Hi all,

Just purchased a savage 16 300wsm in left hand. Came with Burris rings and bases. I think I am going to go with a 4x12 scope with adjustable objective. Also going to put on a bubble level/anticant device. For the scope I think I am going with a vortex, but I cant decide on ammo.

Planning on using this on blackbear hunt in May.

I have been looking at some ammo on the Hunting Shack website. Seems really reasonable for 300wsm. Its the 165speer BTSP, has a bc of over .5

Any hunting bullet that is 150 grains or more will work. I would lean towards a Heavier bullet but it comes down to what groups the best in your gun. I am a big fan of Nosler and Hornady Bullets for hunting. I have also been wanting to try out some Bergers. HSM loads the 185gr Bergers for the 300wsm for about $45 a box at Midway.
There really is a ton of options.

How would bergers perform in the short range game? I would think that they might prematurely expand and not penetrate at higher velocities.

Out of my 300wm and 7wsm I prefer heavy Berger VLD's and heavy accubonds. Both work really good on whitetails, pigs and smaller game. Both have proven to be very accurate for me out to 1000yds.

Midway has a sale on some Federal Premium ammo, it has the 180grn Barnes MRX bullet.

I shot the 180 Accubonds out of 300 WSM and they shot great. The load was 67.0 grains of RL 22, Norma brass, FGM 215M primers at a COL of 2.850.

I shoot 178gr Amax in my 300wsm for hunting. Does the job for sure.

My family uses Nosler 180gr. E-tips for hunting with great success (lead free bullets since we live in California). I believe the the 300 WSM performs the best with 180-210gr rounds, 180gr. rounds are the best for hunting imo.

My savage loves a Hornaday 180 gr btsp. Nothing fancy but it works.
