This is a very dangerous ideology. Context is what defines morality of action. If you do not admit the context that you "know" is a result of what you have been told, then you will always remain ignorant to truth.
Moshe Barazani and Meir Feinstein blew themselves up (originally intending to kill British soldiers) inside of a British prison. If I give you no context, what do you assume? Do you think they are terrorists? Other groups have used suicide bombing, groups we recognize as heroic based on the context of their actions.
Remove the context and people search for reason. (White cop shoots black perp, without context he is a racist) Unfortunately, two of the main reasons people have identified here are Muslim and Arab. Now you have a population of 1 Billion and 350 Million respectively that are as diverse as a population can be, but due to a lack of context, they are all the same.
This leads to racism, discrimination and "common sense" about a group. This is how intelligent, rational people, who truly believe they do not discriminate and are not racist actually become it without realization. This very same mechanism of context manipulation is exactly how a terrorist is created from a relatively rational individual. How an entire population can support a Nazi.
Muslims and Arabs across the United States who are as American as you and I are viewed with suspicion (even hatred) without knowing anything about them because how people and the media has filled in the blanks. Think about this for a second, there is a huge secular Jewish population, there is a huge secular Christian population, how many secular Muslims have you heard about? How is it that Muslims only fall into two groups radical or not (yet) radical, but never secular? The sad thing is, this is such "common sense" that it goes unquestioned.
The commercial was sad for anyone who has been effected by these terrible actions and for innocent people who reap the consequences of stereotypes. The portrayal of a "Middle Eastern" looking, stereotypical terrorist that the only context we see in the commercial is what he looks like, and what assumptions we can make about him based on that (i.e. Muslim and Arab). What effect do you think that has on the general public perception of all Muslims an Arabs. I'm glad someone banned this and made a decision to stop reinforcing such "common sense."
[corrected "killed..." to "originally intending to kill..."] </div></div>
VERY well said.
That said, All religon is, eventually, extremeist, and hould be avoided. Just follow the truth, and youll stay on the narrow path.
