Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

Has anyone else noticed how many people are selling their Atlas DBM's recently? Ever since the raise in price by Atlas, I have seen at least 15 in the last week or so for sale either here or many other forums. On here, I saw it for sale for a good price but everywhere else they are going for $150+... it's nuts. How much are they now from Atlas?

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

@ Charles

Thanks, I'm also happy with the result.

I'm using the 10rd .308 AI mags. It has minimal play (almost nothing) at the mags.
The inletting is done by my gunsmith. My stock already had molded in alu pillars, so it was a lot of work to get it fitted correctly.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

These still worth it at almost $200?

The last I saw on the website they were 155.00. You need to change the currency to USD to get the correct price.

Still worth it? Well, I have had a few people look at mine (still unmounted) and they all agreed they look and feel the same as the other bigger names out there. You have to decide if it's worth it for yourself.

The biggest complaint is that there is little info available (sans this thread) as far as mounting depths/inletting are concerned.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

$155 is still cheaper than most. Thanks.
I like how mine is fitting so far, I will finish it soon, I want to bed the stock, top and bottom (possibly) and then I will see how it works in the range.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

mondo , would you post some pics when you get her ready? Could you also post the specs on your inletting and spaceing once you field test?

Thanks.... Just trying to keep the flow of helpful info going!!!

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

Just ordered mine.
Tempted to try the Ruger mags too...

Check back on page 13........I believe the metal Ruger mags work well, but the Polymer ones are a no-go.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

If you check the updates on page two of the plastic mag thread.....

It seems if you want to tweak a lil they will work.....

Kepp the info coming...Good Stuff in this thread and its offspring!!!

Thanks

Charles

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

Got mine in the mail today... finish is nice and even... machine work looks clean... and the included spare parts is a nice touch.

I pulled the action from the stock just to eyeball it and I gotta admit....

I'm getting pretty excited!! Gonna try the inlet myself this weekend. I'll post progress when it occurs.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

I am still working on mine, haven't been able to work on it much lately... I have been busy making sticker/decals. At least more money for me to buy more stuff.

As soon as I am done, I will post pics and some info.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

Mine should be here sat!!

What is the AI part number for the 10 round mags. I don't want to buy the wrong mags! Also it looks as if a lot of places are out of AI mags right now. Anyone have a good source.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

So.....I butchered the hell out of the fiber glass. LOL
Took my time with the aluminum tho.
Installed, it looks ugly (my fault) but functions flawlessly.
I have put garbage Wolf Steel case, FGMM, NATO Surplus, Winchester, PMC, and even the Zombie Max stuff thru it so far (just cycling and feeding)... Ran each batch with extreme patience and then as fast as I could cycle it.

Absolutely ZERO Failures to feed so far.
I'm gonna clean up the fiberglass in the next few days and take it to the range and see if firing it changes anything.

So far ATLASWORX is GTG.
(EDIT) forgot to add that I am using an AI 10rd magazine.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

Gen21TR,

If you don't mind post some pics of the before and after....once you you get it cleaned up

let us know what not to do and how to fix mistakes,.,,, I am pretty sure you will get it looking cherry ......

letting some guys know how to fix things if they get messed up may help them do this DYI

what about seating depth on the dbm?

Thanks

charles

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

I haven't been following the hide for about 3 months. From the posts that I missed, there still isn't a gunsmith we can ship our stocks to get inletted for the Atlasworx. Is that correct, or did I miss something?

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

Would everyone who had a smith inlet for Atlas that fit and functioned properly ( and not mind doing it )

Please put there contact info in this thread

Thanks

Charles

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

Alright, i've got a question before i go any further inletting my stock. What i've got the stock inletted and the bottom metal fits in the there, it drops in with a push and it's a tight fit. But, it's not flush with the stock. When i put the action and barrel in, the trigger doesn't protrude quite far enough into the trigger gaurd, there's just enough that i can get my finger on it. The action works fine. I'm waiting on mags i have on order before i can see how it feeds.

So my question is, how do you get it flush with the bottom of the stock? Do you drill/grind the pillars to inlet it deeper? Right now the bottom metal is sitting on the pillars and not going any deeper than what's in the pictures.

Rifle is a remington 700 sps in a hs precision stock. I know i boogered the stock up in a couple places (needed a smaller bit) but i have a plan to fix those. I just need to know how to get it deeper.

I included pictures of the inside to show how deep it is within the stock itself.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

^^^ You will need to grind/mill the pillars/block. The BM should be about flush with he bottom of the action if running a .308 or similar.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

I had to cut mine so it could work better, since it was scratching up my brass a bit, now it seems to be working better. Anyone else have to do this? Also did anyone else have to modify the feed ramp? I haven't but I am thinking about it, I mean just polishing it up so the round can go in smoother.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

I had to modify the metal, and with AI mags, it runs flawlessly. Going to order some McRee mags to try as well.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

Mondo - I had to do the same cutouts on the 'top" of the thing, but I believe it is because the mag release lever is a little short. After notching the top about the same as you did it feeds great with my Alpha mags.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

Had to notch mine also. Now it sits just a little bit deeper than flush with the stock. Notch the feed ramp also to run the Alpha type 2 mags. Seems to work ok so far. Only problem is that the Alpha mags spread a little loaded to 10 and won't insert so have to load to 9 and still real snug.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

Alright, good, just wanted to make I wasn't the only one. Thanks.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

I am glad I found this thread I have been bouncing back and forth about a DBM. Has anyone tried this in a stock that is already DBM? Just asking to see if you would still have to inlet due to this being an odd size/dimensions. Def going to pick one of these up. Where is a good place to pick up the AI mags? also any certain ones that will only work with this DBM. sorry for all the questions I am new to the long range world. Came from a life of 3-Ar15's lol

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

After working the tweeks out of my inletting job, I got it down to it feeding perfectly smooth, as smooth as a center feed is gonna be, and now I am going to do a bedding job with steel epoxy from Brownells. I was going to sell it since I fell in love with the mcree chassis when I messed with it a month ago but I don't know what I am going to do now after the bedding is done.
I will post pictures and will hit the range before and after the bedding is done. I might even make a short video so others can see what I did to work out some problems I ran in the way.
It had to be inletted much deeper than I thought, first problem I ran into but all is good now.
I will post pics up soon.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

critical/useful dimensions are final length of front and rear pillars, I posted mine as have a few others - maybe post yours for comparison

for .223 you cut the radius deeper yet than the picture shows, it comes out all the way to the sides

for my next one I am going with the stiller DBM - comes with the screws/pillars, magazine and has a nice mag well opening - I have noticed the atlas is not real conducive to rapid mag changes

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

I had to do the radius trick to mine as well.

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

are these trigger guards still avail @ $118shipped?

Re: Remington 700 bottom metal alternative

wow this thread is still going?

mine works fine. i actually am using the ruger plastic mags in my 308 700. they work you just gotta sand them down a tiny bit on the front feed ramp area and under where the round is held. it feeds fine, no problems. probably not worth it in the long run but its nice to have some cheap mags that are reliable. also very light weight.
