even thought i like 'em kinda chubby...

i bought a 5R about a month ago. so far i only have 40 rounds thru it. why is the grip so thick? the only thing i can think of is so the operator doesn't white knuckle, and/or death grip it. for the limited time i have with it, i just seem to hold on to it in a very relaxed manor (just seems natural with a thick grip), which would help with trigger control, i would assume. i just lay my hand on it and gently pull the trigger. when i switched to my hunting rifle (rem 700, wooden stock), with a "normal" thin grip, i have a tendency to ham fist it.

this is the first precision rifle i owned, and the first thick stock i put my paws on.

Re: why is the grip so fat?

Its called a palm swell. I got a HS from a 5R not too long ago that I put on my AAC-SD and it had the palm swell. I have small hands and it really bugged me so I got rid of it and got a B&C and I love it. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I read that the palm swell helps to maintain consistent trigger position/pull. I have heard that a lot of competition shooters use the palm swell stocks for that reason. For me it sucked and put my finger in a weird place on the trigger but you may grow to love it.

Re: why is the grip so fat?

i genuinely like the thicker palm swells on the HS Precision stocks. its one of the reasons i kept my PSS stock. it just feels comfortable to me, hand placement, thickness, angle...

I tell you what... a good friend has an XCR Tactical long range. it has a Bell and Carlson stock and i shot 20 rounds through it when diagnosing a scope issue once last summer. the grip was so skinny, it felt un natural to me. again, just my individual druthers here, but it felt WEIRD. it just didnt feel 'right' to me.

If it doesnt feel 'right' to you that its that thick, try a few other stocks out if possible as you might find them to fit you better. its all unique to each individual shooter what works for them. the cool thing about this rifle is its YOUR personal rifle, and doesnt have to conform to some other spec forcing you to use this or that or this other thing. try different stuff and see what works best for you.

Tell me this: you asked if its sposed to be that big, but how does it feel to you?

like i said in my first post:

it feels fine to me. i doesn't bother me that it is thick. i was just wondering the reason be hind it, if my assumptions were correct.
