Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Long story short. I'v been lookinig at several Vortex scopes. Last week I called again and spoke with their C.S. He pointed me to Midway for the scope and to here for the promo discounts. Found a valid $30 off and ordered it, $481 to my door, not bad.

Yesterday, back at Midway saw the scope for $399. Called Midway and got re-imbursed to the sale price. Great service.

As far as the scope. The mil dots are dots. They are spaced at 1 mil all the way across. The reticle is calibrated at 15x according to the manual.

On a 4-16x44 Viper HS LR the Butler Creek sizes are #16 eye piece, #33 objective. Haven't tried them on this the 5-15x44 yet though.

A question- does anyone know how this reticle will perform in low light? I want to use this for hunting and dawn/dusk are critcal times. But for $399, I'm keeping it either way, and it will make one hell of a Ruger 10/22 Target scope.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I just ordered one too. I also ordered a set of low talley lightweights in 30mm. I hope it clear with butler creeks on. It's going on my 300 wsm which is a stiller predator with a #4 brux on it. I'm trying to keep it as low as possible for cheek weld.

I'm working on a load with 208 amax's and have them clocking 2880 fps. This scope should have enough adjustment to get me to 1000 with the 0 moa talley lightweights. Can't wait to try it on elk this fall.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Sounds like a good set-up. I used medium Leupold PRW's and a 50 would have fit. You shouldn't have any issues. I can't wait to get out with it, and see how well I can see the reticle in the last minutes. Hopefully it won't be an issue, I really like the Vortex stuff so far.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Just received mine today. Bought it at midway last Wednesday, contacted midway and got money back for the difference of the sale. Have not been to shoot with it yet, but it seems like a great scope, and easily the best I have seen for the price. The turrets are great, much better than I expected. Glass is great and clear and reticle seems perfect for normal use. Couldn't have asked for more from a $400 scope. Will add more info once I get it out and shoot. Mounted on a Remington 700 with Egw base and low rings and fits with plenty of space.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Anyone received their Midway Viper HS WITH the shims or whats the business with those?

I saw that MIDWAY would ship them once Vortex shipped them to MIDWAY, but then I've seen on this topic that we're supposed to call Vortex? What is the order of operations here?

Mine is being shipped BTW, so I have some skin in the game

Thanks!

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Mine will be here Saturday. I'll give a full report but like my other vortex scopes, I expect to be very happy

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

If I like mine I'll be ordering a few more. I have one of the weaver mil/mil 3-10x40s from midway on my 223 AI and I like the mil/mil set up. If I like the vortex I'll have to get one for my 243 and one for my 6.5x47 L. Maybe one for the new 308 that's in the works.

This vortex looks like it offers a lot for the $ and only weighs 21 ounces with the ability to mount it low.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Just got mine in today. Very nice Glass. I am looking at it and my Bushnell 4200 3x12x. Other than the FFP they are both quite nice. I have been wanting to try one of the Vortex scopes out. I had a VM-1 mag for my aimpoint from them. And was not to happey with the eye releaf. So far after mounting and bore sighting. I am quite impressed. Nice clear glass. Good light tranmison. I was going to order one last month to try. But midway was out. Glad I wated. For $399. Very nice scope. I have it mounted on my REM700 SPS tatical .308. Looking forward to a dry day to shoot it.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

This thread just cost me $400! Don't even have a gun for it yet. Just couldn't pass this deal up. I figure you really can lose money on this deal. I was looking to buy a SWFA 10x for $299 but I think this is a better way to go. First time I heard of the VIP warranty. That was a big factor that helped me make the decision.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Mine arrived today. It's my first Vortex scope, so didn't know what to expect, but I'm pretty happy with it so far just messing around at the house. I'll have to get it mounted and head to the range on Saturday with any luck. I have a match on Sunday and almost hate to change anything before then, but if there are any problems with the scope they'll be sure to show up during a competition.

The red fiber optic on the ocular allows you to check the magnification setting when using the Mil-Dots for holdover and range estimation. Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Thanks mdazzo for the share. My buddy has been looking for a scope like this for months. Great deal. You guys on the hide never fail to search out everything. Now if you guys can find a 20 moa rail for his tc venture...

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Burris Signature rings and also get the offset inserts then and place them appropriately for that 20moa.

Good luck finding those right now. I'd love to have a set, but haven't been able to find them and Midway's estimated delivery date is December of this year.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Ouch, it would be a problem.

In that case golden you may have better luck calling base manufactures that currently make a TC Venture mount and beg. Not sure if EGW makes one for the venture but if they do I remember reading on their site that they will do custom orders.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

On a side note, does anyone have a chart that came with the scope showing how thick the reticle line is? I know the dot spacing; just want to know how thick the line is before I buy???

Right off the bat I noticed the reticle line seems pretty thin, but that's just looking at it in the house. I'll have this scope and the SS 5-20 at the range Saturday morning and report back.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

On a note. The owners manual that comes with it is very well writen. It says zero at 15x. Kind of nice that its a unit secific manual and not a generic type. Nice touch.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

And to think, I was all set on a mil/mil SWFA SS 12x before seeing this thread...

I don't need the gobs of elevation the SS offers, SFP is fine as I'll probably be using 15x for the majority of range work, and the $100 premium to the SWFA SS seems like a good value for the flexibility of a variable.

VERY interested to see more comparisons of this scope with others as more members receive them, especially the Bushnell 3-12x44, Weaver 3-15 and PST 4-16.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Could someone post a Range report on these after you take it out. Im about to purchase one in the next month or so and want to hear the good and bad stuff about before.

I'm thinking the same thing. I was going to get the new 10x mil/mil SS scope. But this Vortex has me second guessing. I don't need FFP. It would be nice though. Some extra magnification for F-Class would be nice too.

Got it and its mounted on low rings

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Just got mine in the mail and I mounted it up, I have to say Im impressed with this scope. Clear glass, nice turrets. I didn't get the zero stop shims, so I guess I have to call Vortex? What Butler Creek caps do you guys use? I liked to put some on. Over all very happy with it so far, I'll be taking it to the range on Saturday to test it out.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Call Vortex for the shims. Some had them in the box some did not.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

If I mount this scope in a La Rue LT-104 mount does anyone know if it will clear my Troy BUIS?? Looking to mount this on a SPR build and need to know before ordering the mount

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I got my scope in yesterday. Very pleasantly surprised too, as my original shipping statement indicated I would have it on 4/02. Super fast shipping on a really nice scope.

The deal that is currently going on for $100 off, is something that people need to take advantage of for sure!! I am really happy with this one, and may even be getting another one for the rifle I am building for my girlfriend. I didn't get the zero shims, but it doesn't matter to me, as I have never had a zero stop in my life. I am always looking at my turrets anyways, so it isn't a big deal at all.

The glass is really clear, magnification range is very nice, side focus is nice and tight, turrets are super nice with a good bit of tension on the knobs and good solid clicks. The size of the scope is nice too. The 44mm objective fits perfectly on my rifle with my current setup.

I took it out yesterday afternoon for some pdog elimination. I had multiple targets, ranging from 75 yards to 475 yards. The wind was a bit of a challenge coming down the ridge to the open areas where the pdogs where hanging out. Best shot of the day was a dog that was standing up nice and tall (according to the Leica 1200) at 427 yards. I dialed up 1.5Mils, held off just over 1Mil for the wind. As I was about to pull the trigger, he decided to lay down on the mound, but still left me with being able to see most of his head and part of his back.

My buddy called a calm time for the wind, and I let it fly. The bullet scored a direct hit in the neck, and he stayed down for the full count. It was the farthest hit of the day. It was definitely nice to see that the scope performed so well. I ran the turret out for every shot, and back to zero. The scope is super repeatable, really clear, nice and light, and looks really good too!! I couldn't be happier with my purchase!!

I have owned Nightforce before, and I would have to say this glass is about as clear as my NXS was. It is really a nice scope for the cash!!

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Hmmm I am trying to decide between one of these or one of the new SS mil/mil line...any idea how well this Vortex scope would hold its value? Because I know the SS scopes seem to hold their value very well!

Yes, the SS scopes do hold their value very well indeed. I can't say how well the Vortex HS will hold it's value until the market dictates that. I can tell you this though, I have NO intentions of ever selling mine. In fact, I will be adding to these to my list of rifles that have them mounted!!

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Ok thank you for the input! The only thing that I'm wondering about is if I need FFP or not, I understand I am not going to get it in this price of a scope though. Thats why I'm looking at the SS line.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: BenY 2013</div><div class="ubbcode-body">The only thing that I'm wondering about is if I need FFP or not.</div></div>

Honestly, FFP isn't really necessary with this scope. Your reticle is calibrated to be correct at 15X. I personally don't see any reason why the FFP would be necessary. I want the maximum magnification to do my range estimations anyways, so set at 15X, the scope is perfect!!

The basic SS line are all fixed, so the plane doesn't make any difference. The one that would shine, would be the 5-20, but you are talking about $700 difference. For me, it was a slam dunk when Midway dropped the sale on this one. I couldn't get my card out fast enough.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Just to give EVERYONE a heads up.

Midway USA JUST sent me an email for the ZERO STOP shims that did NOT come with the scope.

The shims ARE shipping NOW!!!
