Gunsmithing Remington 878...

Been having a problem with my dad's old shotgun hanging up. I tore it down, cleaned everything and put it back together. That fixed the shoot twice and hang up problem but now, when a round is being ejected, it gets caught on the bar at the end of the screwdriver tip and hangs up on the shot shell itself.

Is that bar supposed to extend up as far as the lower one?

Also, a gunsmith had to machine a new extractor, couldn't find one at the time, and there is a good bit of slack between the shot shell rim and the bolt face. Is that normal or should I look for the factory extractor?

Re: Remington 878...

The ejector tip is broken, the part right at the end of your screwdriver tip. That is what indexes the barrel and that is part of your problem. The extractor for the 870 is as common as dirt and there is no reason he had to 'machine' one.
The ejector replacement requires some tooling and should be done by a COMPETENT armorer or COMPETENT gunsmith, the extractor is easy if not a little frustrating for first timers.
It's not dead, just beyond the typical hobbyist's realm of ability, the correct riveting punches are not cheap enough to buy for a one time job.
Also when getting the new parts specify you want machine extractor and ejector, NOT express i.e. MIM parts, get the 870 Police parts. Same thing just machined parts.

Thanks for the info.

The extractor was replaced before the internet came along... I'm assuming the original gunsmith didn't have the resources to find that piece. He was otherwise a very competent gunsmith.

Is this the part that I need?

Re: Remington 878...

Call Remington with serial number and get the correct parts. It is easier and you will get the parts quicker and with more accuracy. If your gun has a 3'' chamber, then that is the wrong part, you need the ejector with the stop surface for a 3'' chamber. Plus you will need the ejector rivets, and if you get the extractor, you will need the Police extractor and the updated extractor plunger if it is older.
Trust me on this.
