Long story short, went through MEPS for Army NG. Got a 98 ASVAB, fluent in Chinese. Everything was good physically except eyesight. 20/20 correctable but diopter was like -10,-11 with limits being -8,-8. Doc recommended me to get a waiver, was wondering how long this process takes?

I was going to go for infantry, I am trying to get back by end of August for ROTC and grad school after basic and AIT. Trying to figure out how long these processes take, my recruiter couldn't give me a solid estimate.

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: Army National Guard and MEPS Question

usually fairly quick, but sometimes slow as hell...

which is why the recruiter can't tell you, but MOST I saw back when I was dealing w/ that stuff were done in under 30 days, some took 90ish days

Re: Army National Guard and MEPS Question

Oh my, was hoping for a quicker resolution. Do you think I will get approved? I have barely any astigmatism just near sightedness

Re: Army National Guard and MEPS Question

Thanks for your info, I was preparing so much for MEPS only to get DQ'd for this, was a big downer.

Re: Army National Guard and MEPS Question

Not sure how things are nowadays, but when I joined, I had to get a waiver for orthopedic hardware in my hip. I went through a medical review and had to get signed off by the doc, but it was done within a week. Again, not sure how they work now, but I can't see why it'd take incredibly long. I hope this gives you some hope, I would check to see what required vision is for the MOS you're shooting for, and go from there.

Re: Army National Guard and MEPS Question

My only options for MOS was really transportation, field artillery, and infantry (due to time restrictions and school, needed a MOS with shorter training period). Couldn't really find anything about vision requirements for them.

Re: Army National Guard and MEPS Question

You'll get your waiver...just don't dork up anything else. My brothers in the Big Green are downsizing by 40K to meet the new DoD budget and new acquisitions (people side) is one of them. If you don't want to be infantry...this may help. Not sure what the USA standards are for riflemen...USAF...you've got to be able to see. The language will help...plan on TDYs.

Re: Army National Guard and MEPS Question

Speak with your recruiter. He'll have the latest and greatest info. When I was a USMC Recruiter all medical waivers had to be closed out by the end of each month. Middle month review usually took a week. ANG may be different though.

Typically if the MEPS Doc stamped "MED DQ - Recommend Waiver" it was approved.

Re: Army National Guard and MEPS Question

Thanks for all the responses. Hopefully my ASVAB score and being fluent in Chinese will help me get the approval.

Re: Army National Guard and MEPS Question

You know, delayed entry works for college as well as high school.

If your college interfers with going to basic and ait, then you can go to basic this summer, and ait the next.

One of my kids did that.

Sorry I can't address the waiver issue, when I joined they were drafting. All you had to do to get is was show them you were alive.

Re: Army National Guard and MEPS Question

Yeah I know delayed entry work, but if I get MOS qualified, I also get the GI Bill I think.

Re: Army National Guard and MEPS Question

Read the waiver closely!!!!!! It will pay off in the end.

Re: Army National Guard and MEPS Question

He will never see the waiver.

I recruited for 4 years. waivers are normally fast like already stated. but some recruiters will hold off an applicant till the following month(its a numbers/quota thing).

Just keep following up with your recruiter.

You will get some sort of NG/Reserve assistance/ Federal Tuition Assistance. You will not get the post-9/11 GI bill. To get this bill requires at least 90 days active duty- for NG and Reserves, that is 90 days active duty POST initial entry training. Thus to get in on this GI bill will require you to A) deploy, B) Spend at least 90 days doing Active Duty for Special Work(ADSW), C) Active National Guard (AGR)

Re: Army National Guard and MEPS Question

I was referring to the montgomery gi bill, i thought i got that for being mos qualified.

Not exactly mere MOS-Q, but MOS-Q coupled with other factors including character of discharge.

It's important to not misunderstand the chronology of benefit accruing and their actual use. These benefits are contractual, but as with all contracts, one needs to understand the fine-print of the terms which generally means a successful completion of contract in the contractually specified terms.

I'd utilize State benefits first before touching the Fed benefits, assuming you reach the proper qualifications necessary for them.
