Every time I get a lead on some ammo 5.56/.223 locally it's gone when I get there. Anyone else seeing this trend?

Re: Ammo selling out?

I usually order my components on the internet and make my own. But I keep the local walmart dry of 45. And When I suggested that maybe they should stock more than 1000rds at one time they said oh we couldn't sell that many.

Re: Ammo selling out?

All ammo and firearms supplies are drying up in preperation for the election. It is the same trend as before in the '08 time, but it has struck much earlier this year. People are stocking up preparing for possibility of new laws depending who takes office. Even Ruger has haulted taking any orders on weapons until May because they've received over 1 million orders this year.
Prices will only rise and supplies will lower. When you find stuff buy it up. Buy it cheap and stack it deep.

Re: Ammo selling out?

Local Bass Pro had 4 400 round cans of 5.56 for $175. I called and 30 min later when I got there they were gone. It's getting harder to find. Mail order here I come.

That's not entirely true. I don't know where you are getting your info, but Ruger is working on a daily basis to fill <span style="font-weight: bold">backorders</span> on their SR1911. They may not have enough in full circulation until <span style="font-weight: bold">May</span>.

I won't hold it against you, but this is typical misinformation of the rumor mill.
wink.gif

People go crazy during election years, because they think some anti-gun president is going to get elected. The NRA and their modern propaganda tactics are to blame for that. The NRA's latest propaganda is driving the gun market because they are creating fear in the minds of gun owners. It is totally unfounded. The NRA is a multi-BILLION dollar business, and has taken in more new members through FEAR than any other since Obama has become president.

Again, FACT ... not hearsay or political. I'm simply stating the FACTS. Also, it's quite genius on the NRA's part, if I might add. Look at their contributions since Obama took office.
wink.gif
Heck ... they even have a weekly "Obama Alert" E-Newsletter that gets sent to email inboxes all over the nation. 90% of the junk in that newsletter is nothing more than tabloid material.

Again, Fact!

Re: Ammo selling out?

Not an issue here. I went to Cabela's today and would say they had well over 100,000 rounds. Even the reloading section was stocked as usual.

Actually, junior, <span style="font-style: italic">you</span> are the one who is misinformed. The "FACTS" are that Ruger HAS in "fact" suspended taking any new orders until the month of May. This was reported on by several websites. Perhaps you should check <span style="font-style: italic">your</span> "facts". But, hey, who knows? All of these sources are probably wrong. Maybe they should get their news from the guy with all the "facts". You should give them your number!

Re: Ammo selling out?

Just what I expected from some of you all ... flaming. You can't argue intelligently, so you get mad.
sick.gif

The fact is ... if you want to get down to the nitty gritty of it all ... I interviewed an NRA spokesperson back in January for a well know gun rag. To make a long story short .... they cut me off and 'quit' the interview when I asked certain questions about their recent ramping up and funneling member dollars to marketing endeavors instead of what members intended the money to go for ... fighting legislation against anti-gun bills and propositions.

The bottom line is the NRA is a business. They have become a cash cow over the past 3 years due to their marketing strategy. Think what you want.

Let the flaming begin.
grin.gif

Also, read my previous statement. What did I say? I was only disagreeing with the number of <span style="font-weight: bold">1 Million orders</span>!
whistle.gif
Is that 1 Million single pistols and rifles, or 1 Million individual orders for 100 firearms each? Are they counting orders for stocks and gear? What's the scoop?

ATF’s Fast and Furious scandal. How about that for starters. Look at it this way if they can shove healthcare on us, what's to say they won't do it with guns. It will be for our own good, they are smart enough to backdoor it in. Don't fool yourself in thinking you are smarter then they are and don't think they care about the constution.

The NRA is a for profit organization doing what for profit organizations do, and NO, I'm not defending them.........

As far as politics go, that door might have been cracked open just a little by somebody here but YOU stepped up and kicked it wide open there genious.......and YOU said the "O" word.

I'm sure "they" would love to send some antigun legislation down the river at us just as fast as they could, but how about the backdoor bullshit designed to sway the opinions of Joe and Jane Public?

Fast & Furious ring any bells there Mr. Rooster Man, or did you miss the context of all that?

Re: Ammo selling out?

One of the AIM Surplus sales folks told me that when they run a real special these days, sometimes the entire inventory of that product will be gone in three hours.

Re: Ammo selling out?

I'll defend the NRA. I know it's a large and complex organization, but without it I believe we'd be in very different circumstances today.
I don't appreciate all the junk mail I get, but I do think they have some smart people making the organization bigger and stronger. Heck I'd like to see it HUGE.

Regardless of the NRA issues or Obama issues, there is an important lesson here. There have been no recent anti-gun laws, no significant elections, no significant anti-gun rulings from a major court, no legitimate problem with raw materials, YET THERE IS STILL AN AMMO SHORTAGE! What does this tell us if there is an anti-ammo bill passed, or bad election,...etc?? Just the threat of Mr. O being re-elected has dropped supply of cheap ammo, some reloading supplies and some guns. My local dealer says he can't get cheap AR's now, they're unavailable (at least to him). No one knows right now, but we may be looking at another major ammo/supply shortage.

Hey Rooster, I am not going to use the words I want to today, it is Easter and I just got back from sunrise mass, but you are F'ed up....if you think for one moment that this president does not have a world wind plan for guns if he is re-elected you are sorry mistaken....

He hates guns, hates Americans, hates this country, he hates people who love America and want to defend the Constitution. Most of all he loathes the Constitution of the United States and will do anything in his power to destroy it....

If he is re-elected you will see the wizard come from behind the curtain and we will SEE what he is really like, I can only imagine....

Re: Ammo selling out?

I'v seen this dry up in my AO as well, still get generally good deals online but have to act fast. Unfortunately I have been shooting more becaause of a better work schedule. I guess I'll have to pull the trigger slower or roll with rimfires..
I still have lots of the conversion ammo I stocked up on back in 07/08.
I think all of the prepper shows on tv have started the snowball rolling on the demand end of things..I forsee the fair market value to be inflated until november then spike 10% if things stay the same, for about six months then slowly drop.
If a rep gains office a 10% drop and prices to continually decline to say 2005ish pices..

Unless the Myans were right.

Re: Ammo selling out?

I expect a certain level of delusional foolish naivete regarding the ownership of firearms amoung the general population, but to read here is rather disappointing and worrisome.

That being said, there is alot of price speculation in the ammo market as well. I only buy from gun shows and I am fortunate to have many good ones in pa to chosse from. Many dealers create the demand by controlling the supply. I do see prices climbing, but I haven't witnessed any shortages yet.

This is customary of the typical 'anti-administration' rhetoric I get from a lot of uneducated gun owners. It reminds me too much of a certain painter from Germany ..... you get the point.

Re: Ammo selling out?

The Walmarts and cabelas are here stay pretty stocked, I haven't had trouble getting any ammo. Just depends on how much your willing to pay, I think cabelas is grossly over priced on a lot of its ammo.

Re: Ammo selling out?

Rooster Shooter, Thanks for high jacking my thread with your political crap and Obama love.

All I wanted was the info that these well informed people have. Keep your rambling for your pulpit.

Re: Ammo selling out?

So, anyways, here's some sites that I keep my eye on for ammo. Many of them change on a daily basis but it is a good place to look for ammo along with your local contacts:

http://www.aimsurplus.com/
http://www.ammoman.com/
http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/index.php
http://palmettostatearmory.com/
http://www.sgammo.com/
http://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/index.html
http://wideners.com/index.cfm

They all have some of the same ammo at times but different prices; just shop around and find the best deal you can. Once there is a good price though, they don't last long as you've seen.

Re: Ammo selling out?

My only issue with NRA is that they spend too much money trying to get me to renew every year.

I get more mail from them then any other place, that has to cost good money as I'm sure I'm not the only special one getting it. Spend that money doing what we as gun owners want, protecting our rights.

With that said, last year I joined the Second Amendment Foundation and have yet to receive any junk from them. Yet they helped get suppressors legal in Washington and are working on other important gun rights issues as we speak.

I am 3rd generation NRA member on both sides of my family and it just bothers me a little to see what I "think" they have become.

Oh well.

If you haven't noticed a pattern yet there might be little hope for you... There is an election on the horizon and this isnt exactly the first time a run on firearms and ammo has occurred.

Re: Ammo selling out?

Went to the local gunshow and saw plenty of ammo and not so many buyers. I did notice that the price went up since the last show. .556 was selling for 299.00/1000 and now the cheapist I saw was 369.00/1000.

Re: Ammo selling out?

A lot of ammo and firearms dealers are gouging.

A perfect example. Look at Bud's Guns.

Back in November they had the Ruger SR1911 for $625. Now that there aren't any to go around they raised their price to $750!
eek.gif
In talking with Ruger this morning I found that they didn't raise the price to distributors but dealers are raising the price on their own.

Dealer cost is and always has been around $530ish. A local shop around here is pricing them at $849. It's ridiculous. I've been a on waiting list for one at $599, but I may never get it.

I thought Ruger was in the middle of their "Million Gun Challenge"(or close to the end)...wouldn't this probably have something to do with suspending orders and larger number of sales??? They have been marketing the hell out of the LCR and the rest of the LC line in every possible place

Re: Ammo selling out?

Hold on to your money. I'm waiting as well.

$530 to $550 is about right depending on your dealer status. I go through a guy who deals with Ruger exclusively and has distributor status with them. If I understand it correctly, he has a $15k a year minimum purchase requirement with them to get them to deal with him. He says he is on 'the list' to get 10 when they ramp up production on them. I'll be getting mine for $599 if they EVER do ship.

That's not gouging ~ it is simple marketing.
You may not like it that someone raises prices when demand is high and supply is low but it is normal healthy business.
Don't like the price ~ DON"T BUY!

And quit posting about ammo shortages its a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Hey, I know its a little off topic but I usually buy my ammo from www.surplusammo.com or www.ammunitiontogo.com. I usually check between the prices for the best but I haven't had an issue getting large chunks of ammo as of yet.

I always buy online since it's usually much cheaper. I just ordered 1200 rounds of XM855 today from Ammunitiontogo.com.

Re: Ammo selling out?

Here is the info I have received both from distributors as well as manufacturers (yes I am in the business). The military is replenishing its stockpiles which got depleted. Because of this, the lake city ammo federal and everyone was buying has dried up until the military is restocked. According to Lake Ciy, they are hoping to have this completed sometime in June. When the LCD ammo dried up, everyone started buying up rem PCM or whatever they could get. Some stores started putting in people's heads that the election coming up was causing the scare and there was a shortage. This is true to a very little extent. Yes the closer we get to the elections, the more expensive things will be and the scarcer they will be, but the currenT "shortage" is just temporary until LCD gets caught up. I am sure the other manufacturers are loving the right now because they can push their target loads and if they are smart they will ramp up production. In the meantIme dealers and consumers will be allocated ammo so consider it like playing the stock market. Buy what you need and can afford but try not to get too wrapped up in all of the conspiracy crap. Remember what happened after the last election when everyone was paying $500 for 1000 rds of 223 and then a few months later it was $270!

Re: Ammo selling out?

DHS is also ordering 175 million rounds of .223.

First of all, what a first-term president is willing to do and what a lame duck president is willing to do are significantly different. In his second term he will not have to worry about getting reelected and will not have to pander to moderate or swing voters.

Secondly, why are you trying to artificially limit his record to 2009 and later? As a senator he supported about a dozen anti-gun bills. The best predictor of future behavior is to examine past behavior.

Re: Ammo selling out?

I stopped by Wal mart in Hernando this morning to get a phone card.
Walked over to sports and there wasa big whole, vacant spot in the ammo case,
No 100 rd bxs of fed .223,and no 550rd bxs of point 22lr
I was told 1 man purchased all 12 bxs of the .223 and that the .22lr was hard to get it has been on back order.
They were out of the LC 30 cal ammo can 223/556 what was it 420 rds for $179 ^
But Sportsman ware house had pallets of ammo Sunday last .
And realistic, some have more ammo than brains, stacked neck deep around various places,
And will never shoot it all,and would never sell it.?????

And I do agree that at times there is price gouging .
but its a good read, and if it goes to the top to ofton or whatever ,dont read it or post on it ,or some one lock it and thro it away...

Re: Ammo selling out?

HAHA
Could not help it.
Stopped by yesterday at S.W. in Southaven and I mean there was a buyer bought 10 cans of the LC in the 30 cal can and he was a prepper and stockpiler. And believed a shooting civil conflict is on the way.
Dayum,I ask him who he thought he would be shooting and all the rest.
Then another guy stopped by and bought 4 cans.

I did not speak to him except to show him where that ammo was sitting.
It was an interesting afternoon ,
Stopped by ammoman a while ago and his price is 30-40 more than at Sportsman.
Maybe I waited to late to try reloading or handloading.
But prices do seem to be creeping up.
