i have a friend with an spr. this thing will just plain not shoot 175 or 178 smk. i have tried the standard 43gr of varget in win brass with fgmm primer in it and the best it will do is 1.5moa. i have shot this load in so many .308 its not funny and it is always liked about like shooting fgmm. it just plain works but not here. so, we tried laddering up in.02gr to 45gr which is the higher node for varg, win brass,175smk. groups opend up to 4moa.

base, rings, yada yada are all gtg. have tried it squeaky clean to fouled. doesnt matter. crown looks ok but has been threaded by an unknown smith when it was purchased. it has been bedded by sac so that is gtg. i do have a camera i am going to run in the bore this weekend so we will see.

any ideas where to go with this thing? we have not tried a box of fgmm for shits and giggles but plan to. i am at the point of suspecting a bad barrel. this is about the first 308 i couldnt get to shoot the 175.

Re: fn spr will not shoot 175 or 178....

Try a different power. My 5R doesn't do well with Varget and not sure why. Reloader 15 (43.3gr) and the 175 SMK is a great combination. Also 2000MR (47.5gr) is just as good with more fps. Both of the loads above are loaded to 2.815 OAL. I'm still trying to get the 178Amax to work. Getting a little frustrated.

Check also the screws which hold the action to the stock. Mine loosened before and the groups opened up a lot.

No kidding....most do. That's why I think this barrel is jacked up.

If you try 43gr of varget in win brass with either 175 of 178 it will shoot it in your 5r. I would almost guarantee it.

Which is why I'm wondering about the barrel issue some have spoken of on the fn's. The action screws and all hardware has been double checked. This thing has an issue.

It could be one of the bad barrels. I had one. It had what looked like "splotchy" areas as I looked down the clean bore where the chrome lining was bad. FN made it right. They replaced the rifle quickly. It should shoot 175's. I would give FN a call.

Yep, The barrel is trashed. Put a bore scope in it and it looks like somebody ran a dremmel tool down it for about 12 in from the muzzle. Has about 300 down the tube.

I agree: Bad barrel. If your .308 won't shoot with Varget it's a gun problem.
