Future plan of building a lightweight rifle for range and side competiton. Our local 3gun matches has precision side matches out to 600 yards. What would any of you reconmend the lightest contour for a short barrel 18.5 to 20" for a 308 or 7mm08. Rate of fire will be moderate, and movement to different positions and less than ideal field positions during the match. I did a search and got some ideas but looking for more info.

Thanks
Greg

Re: Short barrel contour

A buddy of mine has a sweet little .308, 18 barrel in a medium palma with a muscle brake, it balance great and recoil is nothing and accuracy is ridiculous, I really want one too.
hope this helps.

Re: Short barrel contour

Thanks, I was thinking a light or medium palma or a #6 sporter

Re: Short barrel contour

Heavy palma is my favorite. The extra weight helps dampen my breathing and steady my hand.

Re: Short barrel contour

Remington Varmint contour (its actually a cut-down factory 5R barrel) at 17" does the trick for me.

Re: Short barrel contour

I used a M24 profile and if I had to do over, I would do a Tubb contour or an AI step down contour.

I've been wrong before but think it's a light var contour

Re: Short barrel contour

Thanks for the replies. I have some good Ideas on contour just need to figure out how to get the right balance of the rifle for the for those awkward positions.

Re: Short barrel contour

I have been looking into something similar. Light and accurate but I wanted a short enough barrel I could pull up and take a deer quickly and not hit everything while doing it. I came up with a 20" Krieger in a #7 taper fluted and 1-10 for the heavier roounds, or 1-12 if shooting 155 scenars. I think that is the lightest fluted taper they do. The #7 fluted weighed as much as a #4 taper non taper. And becuase its a Krieger, itll shoot the balls off anything. This set up should be good to well over 600 yards, easily.

This is all opinion based, my thoughts. What are your thoughts about it? Could work
