Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Best thing I've done to keep ticks and mosquitoes off me is to take 1/2 of a garlic section and swallow it like a pill. It won't completely get rid of them, but they'll leave you more alone for about a week.

interesting

im going to be more prepared next week .. kind of a last minute call to go

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Look at the bright side . . . they could have been those little bitty seed ticks that you can't see that get around the tops of your socks and at the waist and leg bands of your underwear.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

I hate ticks. Went out to the family farm to zero my rifle and had a couple crawling on me after just walking through 100yds of ankle high grass...I hate 'em worse than spiders

this is also a surefire method for male birth control, at least through the rest of the evening.

I thought we called them chiggers. I don't remember crossing them in AL but they're everywhere here in GA and I agree- they're worse than ticks!

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

The ticks are HORRIBLE up here in IN as well!

I was out shooting with a couple of buddies and leaned against a tree to support my rifle. When I got done with my string I had 6 ticks on my support hand.

Chiggers are the most miserable bug I think I have had to deal with.

I got them when I was in the army in Texas. Being a Cali kid, I had got ticks before, but did not know of chiggers. Welp, I finished land nav super fast and did not want to be put on a detail... so what did I do? take a nap in a cool damp shadey area(exactly where chiggers hang). I woke up about 20 min before turn in time and thought I was slick rick. Got such a horrible infestation it looked like I was wearing beat red socks from them. Had tons on my junk, even one on my pee hole. HAHA. Anyways, end of story time.

Moral of that? I found that while you cannot see them most against skin or clothing since theyre so small, they are visible on the lower reciever of a M4. So, the AR doubles as a sooper dooper high tech chigger detection device. Keep it in mind.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Here in Kentucky we deal with ticks like some states deal with flies and mosquitoes.

Turkey lice are way worse than ticks. They can make you scratch for days.

I'll let you in on a little 'country' secret. Get a $1 spray bottle at Wal-Mart and fill it up with Listerine Mouthwash. Make sure it's the 'Original' (brownish gold) blend, and spray it all over your clothes. The 'Minty Fresh' blend does not work! Ticks, fleas, mites, mosquitoes, or any other blood sucking rascals won't mess with you.

Try it. I can guarantee you that it works. I use it every year and never have a problem with ANY critter on my clothes.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

oh great now there are going to be a bunch of suckers walking around the woods smelling like an old mans mouthwash. this includes myself as well. our farm has a huge hive of them and i'll try anything once.

how in the hell did you think to try mouthwash?

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

I lived in VA for 4 years prior to joining the USMC, and have since worked my way up from SC, to NC, to VA, to DC... I fucking can not stand those little parasites.

I grew up in the midwest, TX, NE, KS, SD, and occasionally if you crawl in the grass by the rivers you get one or two...

Not the same story out here. I used to get them on the front porch of my house in VA.. unreal. Hopefully I get stationed on the west coast when it's time for me to move from this duty station, now that the family is in Nevada. East of the Mississippi will likely never see me again.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

I never got ticks, ever growing up in Nevada. We used to get some ticks up in Montana. I remember coming back in from the field at Ft. Stewart when the ticks were really bad in August of '83 and I still pulled 31 ticks off me. Pulled them off me that whole week in the field.

Of course being stationed at HAAF I got firsthand lessons on chiggers. The Spanish moss that hangs from the trees down there...don't grab a bunch and use it like Santa's beard...dumbasses that we were back then we did. Don't take hot showers when coming in from the field. Ice works wonders keeping that itch down and eventually making it go away.

But, to keep 'em off you the best thing (back then) was Avon Skin-so-Soft. We'd go through the woods smelling like a bunch of French whores...but dammit it kept the chiggers and ticks off you.

SSS was the only thing that kept the sand fleas from eating us alive during the summers in Beaufort.

Oh yeah! Those goddam sand gnats/sand fleas (whatever they are). We had them down in Savannah too. I know you know how painful they are to try and put up with while standing in formation.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Ticks have been really bad here in Virginia this spring. Every time the dog comes back in from the back he has one or two on him

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Haven't seen one yet till just now. Saw one crawling on the damn wall. Wtf?!?!?!

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Ticks are going to be a big problem this year in the Northeast given how early Spring came, and Winter never showing.

If you've got dogs, look into getting your pets vaccinated for Lyme Disease.

I have been running into them everywhere I go when I am out. When I was down by Thermopolis you could see them crawling all around the thick brush, I have never seen them like this.

It was something my grandad taught me as a kid. Going to pick apples in the orchard, we always smelled fresh!

A lot of people call it an 'Urban Myth' because it has no scientific backing. However, it's like any other folk remedy ... we don't know why it works, it just does!

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

They are super bad in missouri right now too. The mosquitos are no joke either. This my just be a coincidence but when i go out turkey hunting with my thermocel on i come back with no ticks or bites. I went out without it this morning and got tore up by both mosquitoes and ticks. No chiggars yet though.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

i'll give it a try next weekend while i'm out at our farm and report back my findings. like you said, at least i'll smell good after clearing brush most of the day.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

The prediction is that this summer will be a record tick and flea season. With the mild winter, and dry conditions. My pets have started parasite rx.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

I had chiggers once. GEES did they itch. Believe me, if you've ever had chiggers, poison ivy is comparatively, a walk in the park.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Seems the ticks explode population wise in April and May when everytime I go out there are 4 or 5 on me somewhere but by early July they are few and far between and usually don't get even one on me? . Anyone know why that seems to be the cycle? I'm in Ohio.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

I doused all my turkey clothes with permethrin this spring. Not one tick or chigger all turkey season...

Off of a coyote this morning....hideous little bastards..

Usually by late June they disappear around here.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

I don't mind the woodticks. It's those little fucking deer ticks that are bad. Got a bite on my ankle and sure as shit the little bullseye has formed. So now, I guess I may have Lyme disease. Anyone know how that progresses? I'm not one that goes to doctors much, I usually have to be hauled there. I'll take a pic tomorrow.

a fellow PA. guy, hello and congrats on the bird!

i just picked up 100% deet at walmart for like $8.00, seems to be working. hunted 3 days, found no ticks.

permithirin (spelling?) also works well, get the green and yellow can.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

vwhugger, all the doctors do is give you some antibiotics. Lymes is nothing to mess with. Very painfull esp in the morning, makes all your muscels tight.

Ya, I better call them. But I already wake up like that.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Chiggers are those red bastards that live in pine straw and get on you and burrow into your skin and itch like hell. best thing to do is scratch the crap out of it and rub nail polish remover on it...... Just kidding. i got my buddy with this and he screamed when he poured the ammonia based polish remover on him lol. take an extremely hot bath for chiggers and ticks. i mean almost to the point of scalding hot.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Went out last week to get my blind annd ended up with 5 of them darn thingsin less than 15 min.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

I've had good luck with Sawyers Permethrin treatment on pants and shoes. You just have to remember to pretreat.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

My wife picks up a dozen or more ticks each year; typically deer ticks and lately she's had a run of those small little bastards. We've got some woods that back up to our backyard and my wife has picked up ticks while playing with our dog or sun in the yard.

Usually end up pulling one or two off my black lab after each spring/summer trip to our family farm.

Great stuff. I have used it in Indonesia, Fiji, Costa Rica and North Carolina.

Works on ticks, chiggers, mosquitoes, everything.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

I have had more ticks here in KY/TN during the last 3 months than I did the entire 5 years I was here previously. Absolutely ridiculous here right now.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

vw, I really don't like you, but I don't wish that on anyone.
I hope you go to the MD and get that checked out. Don't play around with that shit.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

We loaded with em here in mississippi. In some area u can simply brush into a small pine tree and be covered by wat we call deer ticks. The ones that r so small they can hide at the base of an arm hair. Major pain in the ass. Not lookin foward summer full of ticks. No life changin home remedies here but anxious to give some of these a try.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Ticks not so bad,IOC you hunt the canals or swamps the leeches are much worse. For ticks go to a farm supply and by a bottle of water based permethrin mix 1 tbl spoon to gal water and wash your clothes in it let them dry without rinse., will work better than any thing else and lasts for a couple weeks. Dam leeches wll still latch on though.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

My folks live in TX, they use a "sulphur sock" a regular sock filled with powdered sulfur, they beat there lower legs with it, It works good for chiggers and ticks..

Gets rid of ticks and women equally. You wont smell it, but everyone else will believe me. If you dont need to be around gals or you can live without your wife for one night, this might be the ticket.
