So my brother is a lefty and he has about $1200 to get set up with a rifle (after spending that much on a good optic) . Being a lefty makes it harder for me to find a good entry platform, thus I bring the question to the brain trust.

This gun is the only heavy barreled .308 in LH Savage makes.

Would probably replace the stock for better ergonomics, but that brings up the accustock issue. Would the "accustock" recoil lug fit in a standard choate left hand "drop box" stock? Mags are covered with this route as far as Z71rat's modded savage ones.

Am I missing something? Does Remington have a better LH heavy barrel model that we could do a CDI mod to and add a stock and still be around $1200?

    Thanks guys!

I'm left handed also but I shoot right handed. Left handed rifles are easy to buy but impossible to sell. Let your brother learn to shoot right handed

My thoughts are exactly opposite. Go to the left sale page on here and see how long a rem 700 LH last...you better be quick bc they are gone in no time. On the flip side it is almost impossible to find a rem 700 LH new in the stores.

RH rifles for LH shooters are fine if all you do is bench or prone but not so much if shooting offhand or hunting as it is difficult to stabilize the weapon with your trigger hand and run the bolt.

I agree that the side you shoot should be eye dominance not hand.

    Re: Left-handed "entry" rifle

He is right handed, learned to shoot lefty since a kid because he is LEFT eye dominant! I know, I know. So he pretty much needs to shoot lefty.

Could you link the left sale page for me?

what you could do is buy a cheaper savage 11 hunter model rifle in a short action caliber(243 or 308, if he is set on a 308) for around 400. get a Criterion prefit barrel from jim at northland shooter supply for around 300. get cdi bottom metal and a mag for about 280ish. and a choate stock for around 225.

sell the original barrel and stock for a few bucks. have the barrel installed and the stock inletted and you're good to go for a little over 1200. Will probably be about 1300 depending on how much it costs to install barrel, how much the factory stock and barrel sell for, etc.

Thats pretty much what i ended up doing but not all at once and over a long period of time.

    Thanks Tiger Fan

Triceratops, this is actually a great idea! It would also give us better accuracy than an out of box gun with the barrel manufacturer I'm planning to use. Is there a Hunter not in long action though? Since it will be a 308 build the SA would be preferred.

To try to answer my own question is this a short action?

    Re: Left-handed "entry" rifle

Yes. that one is a short action. and so would .243 and .223.

So if you're gonna get a .308, then buy one similar to the one in the link so that you have the same bolt face.

What kind of shooting will you be planning on doing?

If its only out to 600 then you could look into a savage model 12 flv in .223 and then shoot that until its shot out or until you want to re barrel. the ammo is pretty cheap and cheap to reload and a magazine is only 40 as opposed to 80.

like this one. thats what my buddy and I both started with until we wanted to go further and had more money.

    Re: Left-handed "entry" rifle

He is actually spoiled with shooting my guns way past 600 so he wants to go straight to a 308. We thought about a .260 rem build too, but if you are at all SHTF minded, a .308 makes more sense up front. Especially since I already reload for it and can mass produce semi-match ammo for cheap on my dillon for him.

    Re: Left-handed "entry" rifle

For sure check the left hand for sale thread on here. I am left handed I currently shoot a RH rem 700 sps tact in .223 AI I got from a smith on a trade got a HS stock on it and some smith work done to it, but I would get rid of this gun in a second to find a comparable trade in LH. In the right community like the LH on SH. He could easily buy and sell a nice LH rifle no problem. I suggest him getting the kinda gun he is used to.

I myself tried to shoot rifles lefty for a long time, until someone taught me that I was right-eye dominant, and thus needed to learn to shoot right-handed.

Sadly, I never learned to shoot a handgun right-handed.

    Re: Left-handed "entry" rifle

Being left in a world of right handed is tough. The mention of selling difficult of left handed gun is very true. My approach is I use a right handed rifle, with a McRee stock. You can use any stock with out a raised check piece, the gun is universal for left or right handed shooter. As for cycling the bolt, its all muscle memory so left or right isn't a big issue to over come.

As for eye dominance, use of a scope makes that less of an issue. hope that helps

    Re: Left-handed "entry" rifle

If time isn't a factor just sit on the previously mentions Left handed for sale page. I ended up buying a R700 from buds and not two days later an actually nice looking rifle was posted.

    Re: Left-handed "entry" rifle

You guys have been great help, I have a lot of empathy for leftys now!

I think we are doing a custom build and it will be sweet!

    Re: Left-handed "entry" rifle

A savage. It's not the smoothest action but I found a cheap starter gun and my smith is going to put a match barrel on it easy. The savings will translate to a CDI BM, mags, EGW base etc. All told, for around $1200 we will probably have a 1/4-1/2 MOA gun that is set up with a decent stock, and ready to shoot comps or mount a can for range fun. Will be a cool project to do with him!

    Re: Left-handed "entry" rifle

Triceratops, do you know if those Savage 11 actions are all the same specs as the 10 as far as threads in the chamber for rebarrel and action screw spacing?
