Picked up an M1A

Picked up an M1A 'smithed by Mr. George Gardner himself. It's in a McMillan stock that feels like it's a solid fill. The gentleman who sold it to me told me George built 3 M1As for him on that stock pattern in partial payment for a milling machine back in 2000. The rifle has been in his safe, unfired, ever since he took delivery. It has a Krieger heavy barrel with a 1-12 twist. He's never taken it out of the bedding. Of course, I'm taking a lot of this on faith. I did call GAP, but didn't get to speak to George. The employee I spoke with said they built a few M1As a while (?) back, but didn't fool with them anymore. It's too ugly to be a safe queen, but George apparently didn't build many M1As. Shoot or no shoot...that is the question.

The stock has an adjustable cheek piece and a spacer system to alter LOP. The cheek piece is kinda like that Kydex one that a guy on here sells for any rifle, but he developed it for the M14s; the difference is my cheek piece is a solid 3/8" thick and is rock-steady as you could want with just one thumbscrew holding it in place.

Re: Picked up an M1A

Without any documentation proving pedigree, it's just a story and doesn't add to the value of the gun -from the retail side of things - although a cool story none-the-less. So might as well tell that cool story on the range and you start a round count on the new toy.

Shoot it.

I don't care if my guns increase in value, or if the value decreases the value cause I'm not going to sell them anyway.

I bought my guns to enjoy, not for some other guy to enjoy after I'm gone.

My Super Match was built by Gene Barnett (of Barnett Barrels), so what? That was about 30 years ago. I've shot the crap out of it, wore our some barrels and had to replace some slings, but it still shoots, and I doubt it quit shooting before I do.

Was it this one?

If so, it's most likely legit.

Shoot the piss out of it and give us a range report. Don't be disappointed you first time out though, driving an M1a, even from benchrest, is a lot harder than a bolt or AR. Lock times are much longer, making followthrough critical. Dry firing is your friend, as is loading snap caps with live rounds in your mag to test your followthrough.

I'm used to shooting them from the bench. I have a fairly good technique and follow through. I've had several Supermatch M1As and I just LOVE shooting them. With my last M1A, I'd tape nickles to the target and shoot holes through the nickles. I didn't hit the nickle every time, but I hit the nickle more than I missed it.

In that case...Definitely give us a range report because I'm tempted to buy one of his other ones.
