I purchased a Remington 700 from a local gun shop the other day and want to know what you all think. I think i got a descent buy. It looks as if it started out as a 700 police, as it has the standard HS precision stock and a varmint contour barrel. But it looks like someone tried to trick it out. It has badger ordnance base and rings, SWFA 10x42 side focus with sunshade and butler creep flip caps, a badger ordnance trigger guard that takes AI mags, jewell trigger, and an oversized bolt handle, its not just the knob that was replaced. I got the whole thing for $700 out the door with tax and ATF.

No matter what shape the barrel is in you have a good action, base, rings, bottom metal, scope, trigger, bolt knob, I'm assuming at leat one AICS mag and a decent stock... Yeah I'd say you did ok, but I think you know that. It's just a bonus if it shoots under 1 moa.

Re: Think i got a good buy

im more curious about the factory barrel and stock. are they worth a damn or should i look into replacing them. what kind of accuracy should i expect. i havent had a chance to take it to the range yet. another thing i noticed was it looks like the guy who installed the badger trigger guard attacked the bedding block and stock with a dremel to make it all fit. idk if that will affect the accuracy? it gets tight and doesnt wobble when i tighten the action screws. also, does anyone recommend a torque setting with the action screws? I was always taught 65 inch pounds but dont know if its the same with this rifle and its add-ons

Yes, with the Badger metal and composite stock somewhere around 65 in lbs would be good.

See how it shoots/groups. If you cannot get it to shoot consistent groups and you know you are a decent shot, then try having it bedded. The chewed up inlet job can be fixed then too unless you'd rather save that money and put it into something like a McMillan or Manners stock.

I have a Manners T5 with the mini chassis system, it doesn't require bedding and is a great stock from a great company and a fellow Hide member.

If you don't want to spend $500 to $1000 on a new stock then keep an eye out in the classifieds. You can pick up a replacement HS stock for around $200 but, you will need to have it inletted for the Badger metal.

You have an excellent start.

Don't worry about replacing ANYTHING until you can outshoot the actual capabilities of the rifle. (and you can't and won't for some time)

Too many people try to worry about the gear, when they're worthless shots themselves. Not saying you are, but you can't spell the word "decent", so...

Kidding aside, you shouldn't waste any of your money until the current rifle starts to hold you back. THEN its time to drop serious coin.

And with the specs that you listed, that rig will need a fairly proficient driver to hold someone back.

Go buy some ammo and start measuring groups.
