Gear Queer or Well Equiped?

Re: Gear Queer or Well Equiped?

10 mags would be the minimum ammo load for me and my guys in afghanistan. With tic's running into the hours sometimes, someone running out of ammo was no help to the rest of the team. The only thing I kept on my legs was bandages, drop leg holster, and a tourniquet in my left lower pant leg pocket

Re: Gear Queer or Well Equiped?

+1 for not having anything attached to your legs. I tryed that in Iraq with a 4 mag thigh rig. Basically it did more harm than good. The leg straps would come loose and the rig would slap against my leg. Also, maneuvering over walls and through homes sometimes would prove to be more difficult with a thigh rig attached. I personally would advise thigh rigs of any sort but each man is different.

This mostly pertains to guys who are find themselves in a dismounted role. ie. Infantry, Snipers and Scouts.

Re: Gear Queer or Well Equiped?

Lots of good advice from guys in this thread about not putting shit on your legs, also get rid of that pos serpa, they have failed alot of guys when they were needed the most.

Re: Gear Queer or Well Equiped?

As previously stated - mission drives the gear. The statements about having all that crap on while in a vehicle and trying to move around .... VERY true. Shit, in our R2C specialized vehicles it was like being in a damn Honda. Im 6'5 and 250 and I could NOT fit in the gunner hatch with my IBA on. My gunner was a toothpick that wore SMALL body armor because he was the only guy would could fit in the damn hole. I kept my IBA pretty clean, gerber, IFAC, 3 mags. I kept the assault pack handy with all the extras, mags, NVG, batteries, blah blah blah. Rolled up and strapped to the back of the assault pack was a molle mesh vest with more mags and an additional pouch with batteries for M68s and NVGs etc. If we were gonna be dismounted for any period of time (cache sweeps, etc) I would slap that on over my IBA and roll. We spent 85% of our time mounted. You mission will dictate your setup. Remember ... 8 full mags aren't light ... 3 or 4 full mags on a leg rig ... go sprint 25 meters 4 or 5 times then get in an out of a MRAP 10 times as fast as you can with that on ... let me know how that works out.

I loved the Nicaragua (thinks that where they were from) soldiers who were pulling "security" on the chow hall ... on the FOB ... in Ramadi ... they were kitted out to invade Panama. But damn they made sure you filled your sandbage before you got in the chow line ... Damn sandbag patrol !!!!

Re: Gear Queer or Well Equiped?

My personal definition of a Gear Queer is someone who supplements or replaces training/experience for the latest, coolest gear.
I'm not a fan of thigh rigs. A drop holster attached to the hip is what works for me.

Re: Gear Queer or Well Equiped?

It's been said but let's just reinternate, get the shit off your legs. Get a vest separate from your armor that holds all the shit you couldn't do without. I tried about 6 different ones before I found the 2pc MAV from TT, with the x-harness it is comfortable and distributes the load good. Whatever one you get make sure you can get it on and off fast. A quick list of what was always on mine, 8M14 mags, 2frags, Compass, GPS, spare batteries,IFAK, NIGHT VISION, smoke usually HC, then in the Velcro compartments I had a map, protractor, 2 map markers, and chemlights, plus two of those PETT toilet bags(dissentary is a bitch). Also had the camelback on the back of it. In the assault pack you keep EXTRA AMMO, gun lube, more batteries, VS17 panel, maybe a parachute flare, then extra water, food, clothing, and anything else needed for the mission.

NO matter what the Area seems like or if someone is saying it's safe. Do not go anywhere without a weapon and spare ammo, even on a Big FOB. Most importantly don't start carrying less ammo after you don't see any action for a week or three months.

Keep your rifle running and come home safe.

Re: Gear Queer or Well Equiped?

Nothing like an 18 month old thread being brought back up, but....

I had to laugh at the moto patch that said "As a matter of fact, it is a fashion show".

Re: Gear Queer or Well Equiped?

Waldo, love the name.

When I kitted in the sandbox, both deployment load outs were similar much like guys above and previously said. Your load is mission dependent and the Rock is a lot different. Yours seems pretty light, but you may want to keep it that way, but probably I'd like 10 more mags secured to your pak.

Mounted When we were mounted lite and I gunned, I had a med kit and an IBA, m4a4 comp m4 co witness (matech rear), pec 2, weapon light, rifle and a 6x magazine satchel as a secondary system. Vest was in the vehicle, we had a box of magazines that we regularly loaded and unloaded. Like 50 or so in the vehicle + a minimum combat load & 1000-2000 primary weapons system ammo (50/240 either or) Nods mounted at night in pouch on vest during daylight hours.

Mounted driving/dismount/TC I had a tac vest & drop leg pouch. 9 mags and a drop leg medical kit (pretty much cls without fluid bags), glow sticks, batteries, medivac/casevac signaling eqpt, IR strobe, magnesium fire starter, nods, camel back, multi tool, small light, , zip cuffs, zip ties, 50 ft 550, protein bars, electrolyte tabs, ROE/SOP/ mission essential info. Camel bak Tourniquet in left bottom leg, eye pro in right side, right pocket sping loaded utility blade.

Radios were usually belt mounted and clipped to gear for no snagging.

Thermite grenade was under the radios for quick ditch if you had to boogey.

3 day Gear bags were in rear of vehicle (assault pack). Usually didn't bother with MOP masks were secured to packs or inside.

Dismount local we'd kit with 10 mags, 2-6 flash or grenades, 3-6 smoke grenades (TL's/SL), 6 pin flares 14-20 m203 different rounds split load in pack. 6-1200 rounds SAW load per squad. SDM had own load SOP dependent on weapon m/14 usually m16 w/acog.

Depending on roll in raids or short strawing it, sometimes we'd swap m9's in my squad. I preferred drop leg pistol or low ride holster. Personally though I think the weight is better spent on more mags+ ammo. I always and still use a riggers belt, because they're durable and velcro, always clipped my vest in and leg rig in as well, we still had Interceptors and not the newer style MTV's.

You'll find if you're humping a lot that I'd suggest you jerry rig a lot of gear with 100 mile and hour tape (your best friend), zip ties (a close second) & padding against your body. I'd reccomend mole skin against your body and soft foam padding at wear spots.

We never wore shoulder kev, neck collar was mandatory, neck front was suppossed to be mandatory, crotch kev was personal choice, we put the heavy side plates up and didn't use them. You'll find dependent on your armor load your rig will vary, based on bulkyness. Also weapon harness I liked a 1 point wolf hook or simple carabiner & a piece of 550 through the stock of my m4. When I rocked a short saw a few times I tapped up the sling & made it a shoulder wrapped 1 point.

Re: Gear Queer or Well Equiped?

I think the answer to this is simple and has been stated many times prior. K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid). Take what you need and what keeps you alive, cool shit that can aid in saving your life +1 all day, useless cool shit. May as well post it at the range and put holes in it as it serves a better purpose there.
On my LBT-6094B I simply carry my knife, front mag pouch (3 single ar mags), my admin pouch (right side), pistol mags (left side), usually also carry a pair of combat med scissors and when needed will add extra depending on the situation.
I have a drop leg for my pistol and that is the only thing on my legs.
