Hunting & Fishing God Damn Ticks

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Was up in lynchburg, VA last year in the spring and somehow managed to get one right on the underside of my boys.... Little bastard was in there real deep, took a good 15 minutes to get all of him out.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

if you have a stand, what i used to do is torch the surrounding area and burn the little buggers. Listen for the pop. sometimes no pop but it puts my mind at ease.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

i treat all clothing with permethrin from home depot in the quart cans from the critter killing area.
I also own a www.tickkey.com tick key. they work VERY well at removing the little bastids.
i've tried the garlic trick, and the mouthwash...permethrin works better. so good in fact that i can take a tick off an untreated part of my body, and put it onmy pants...it will fall off dead in a very short time. i HATE/LOATHE ticks more than snakes spiders and bears.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

well my 3 tick bites havent itched or bullseyed...

but yesterday i had another one on my stomach.. FUCKING COCK SUCKERS man i hate these little cunts

i check myself everyday all day im fucking paranoid i work landscaping and my co-worker no lie had one on the head of his penis.. im going to gt me some of that permethrin spray and douse my whole wardrobe

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Do not roll the dice with tick bites. Seek medical opinion/treatment. I had a tick the size of a freckle bury itself on me and damn near went undetected. I ended up in the ER as this was in an area known for Lymes and I had to take a 15 day dose of antibiotics. A relative of mine went undiagnosed for a while and ended up with what medical staff are saying will be lifelong complications, what makes it worse is that he was just a very young boy when it happened to him.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Got one on the underside of my pee hole last year hunting Oceolas down by Okeechobee. None of my buddies would help "get it off". Go figure..... Myself and my dogs despise those satanic blood suckers

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Had a Sgt that swore eating match heads would keep the chiggers away. After getting them I started eating the match heads from MREs and never had them again, don't know if it worked and never got sick.

Those sucker itch a lot got some again last summer. Haven't had ticks in a long time. I always check when coming out of the woods or the pasture. I hate all those creepy crawly things. The thing I hate the most is walking though the woods at night and walking into a spider's web only to find the spider on my face. Never been bit, but freaks me out like a little girl.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

The chiggers are awful on my place. You cant walk out the door with out getting a few bites. God forbid you walk out in the field.

Re: God Damn Ticks

All you fellows need to know this; go to the drug store & get a can of sublimed sulphur. It is in powdered form. If they don't have it, tell them to order it for you. Mix this 50-50 with baby powder....I put mine in a sock & then in a plastic bag. Before I go in to the bush I drop me drawers & powder everwhere from my waist & crotch to my ankles. You will be good to go.
Regards,
R.

Re: God Damn Ticks

I'm headed down for a class in Alabama this weekend and I bought some Permetrhin to treat my clothes. I've read that this stuff is effective for actually killing ticks that come in contact with your clothing. The warnings on the side of the box are little concerning though...anyone have any personal experience with this stuff. Any allergic reactions when you sweat? or anything else I should know about?

Re: God Damn Ticks

WW, I live in Bham and will be at the PMG class as well. I'm also a member at Brocks Gap where we will be this weekend. We wont be close enough to the trees to even have ticks fall on us. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Thank you sir! I assumed we'd be in the trees.

I'll hold off on the Permethrin for now. But I guess my question still stands, it looks like an awesome treatment but what happens when you get it wet in the field... any chance of it reactivating with your skin?

Re: God Damn Ticks

Not sure, I haven't even heard of that stuff. We will probably be sweating a good bit though, so I'm sure your clothes will get sweaty. I hope that helps. See ya saturday. I wanted to try and organize a big shooters dinner for tomorrow evening. At this point I think it's too late though. Later

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Recently long time hunter, and friend(Jerry White) died with Rocky Mountain Spotted fever caused by a tick. There have been a couple more people in his area of Harlan,KY diagnosed with this.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

Thats another thing I dont miss from living back in Jersey. No ticks in the desert. If you can get over having scorpions, black widows n sidewinders.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

I agree, GOD DAMN TICKS and...

chiggers, cottonmouths, rattlers, black widows, brown recluses, deer flies, horse flies, mosquitoes, gnats, wasps, yellow jackets, hornets, bees, crackheads, meth heads...Shit sounds biblical, like a plague mixed with a pocky clipse.

We have all of those around here.

Who needs a make believe zombie?

Oh yeah, and 100+ degree heat and 100% humidity

Other than that, shit's pretty f'n sweet

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

My dad and uncle have both had Lyme's disease. I don't recommend it to anyone for a disease of last resort and I wouldn't wish it on anyone either. I'd go get some blood work done vw, and I'm the same way. I was sick for 2 weeks recently and finally went in with a temp of 103 and found out I have a bacterial blood infection. Just an example, getting it checked out is always the safe route.

I did go in to the clinic but they didn't draw blood. I forgot to insist that they do that. They just gave me a prescription for a 10 day regimen of doxycycline, which I completed yesterday. I feel ok, never had any symptoms arise. All that's left of the bite itself is about a 4 millimeter scab. Hopefully, it's over.

Re: God Damn Ticks

If you get one of those bulls-eye bites but don't want to run to the doctor before you know whether it's getting bigger or not, you can track changes in its size with some scotch tape. Draw a ring at the very edge of the discoloration with a ball point ink pen. Then cover the circle with scotch tape. If the bulls-eye is wider than your scotch tape, just lay enough pieces side-by-side and overlapping to cover it, like roofing shingles. When you lift the tape, you'll still be able to see the ring of ink on it. Stick the removed tape on a sheet of white paper to keep it for later reference.

Re: God Damn Ticks

To my knowledge, Ive never been bit. I pull a half dozen off my dog every day though. I use ratcheting forceps to grab them, then spin them three revolutions to get them to release.

I keep a test tube half full of sulfuric acid which I drop them into (payback is a beyotch). Its interesting that I have dropped more than 1000 into the tube, yet the tube never gets full.

Re: God Damn Ticks

Best thing is to keep covered. Pants tucked in, cuffs tight, etc. Not the best thing in Southern heat, I know I grew up there, but it works. We always did shakedowns at meals too. So after lunch and dinner, we'd strip down and check each other out.

To get them out, strike a match, let it burn a moment, then blow it out... Take the smoldering head and hold it on the tick. It will pull out on its own. Getting the head stuck under the skin can be bad.

I remember the old garlic thing. Not sure how well it works. I used to use DEET in the woods against mosquitos, but I understand it doesn't work against ticks. Permethrin works better here.

But in all my years in the woods I never had a tick problem. We checked each other over a couple times a day and kept our cuffs tight.

Eek, hate those lil buggers. My pups both got lyme disease this past summer. I'm also not much for doctors. That said, I would highly recommend going to one. If you get it treated prior to major joint pain/damage, you won't have much to worry about. Best of luck...

PA has a very high rate of Lyme in their ticks - I would do the 3 weeks of doxycycline in a heartbeat (my mom got in from the Pocono Mountains).

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

It's not the deer ticks I hate, it's those spawns of Satan little ones you can's see that burrow in around the tops of your boots/socks, underwear edges, pants waist, etc.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

I hate ticks. Spray your clothes with Permanone. It kills the vermin while they crawl on treated clothing. I've used it for years with excellent results and zero tick bites.

The antibiotic is under $10, the test is over $100. The world of medicine has been buzzing this past week over doctors being held on FELONY Medicare charges for "ordering unnecessary tests". Think that won't change how your do doctor practices? We are going to see medicine change fast.

Ticks are bad this year - but I think fleas are worse. I think there is a point when doctors should say - wait - this doesn't make sense, A+ B does not equal C and X + Y does not treat Z.

I am very wary of arthropod vectors and their diseases, including ticks and fleas. No one seems to acknowledge human flea infections except with respect to Occupy Wallstreet, but I hope some doctors get their collective heads out of their butts, pull out their microscopes and realize this "head lice" and "bed bug" epidemic we are seeing may not be head lice and bedbugs after all - head lice don't have a larval (worm) stage, nor do adult lice or bedbugs have genal combs. The fact that most (over 90%) of our flea research comes from none other than the House of Rothschild (Miriam Rothschild, specifically), and she was the first one to associate fleas with their ability to spread plague, aka the Black Death that wiped out one third of Europe, doesn't bode well with my reality. Any doctors or entomologists notice all the "dandruff" and "lint" that will either stick to the tip of a ball-point pen or leap 3 feet from it? Put it under your microscope! If any entomologist have any theories please clue me in because I am too darn tired to sort this out; I just don't buy what we are being told... I just think bedbugs and head lice are red-herrings. Lyme is the tip of the iceberg.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

I wonder if wearing a no-see-um mesh bug suit would work? Wonder if the mesh is fine enough to keep ticks off? Groundhog season is starting soon and the thought of getting ticks or of using toxic chemicals to keep them off of me is not appealing.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

50/50 mixture of Pine-Sol and water sprayed on your pants and shoes (boots) should help some. We use it on the horses during the summer where ticks are bad. tuck your pants in your boots, or at least in your socks; check often.

Re: God Damn Ticks

game warden in Wi. put me onto their method.... Wal-Mart carries "Permethene"...yellow box...$13....spray on cloths boots...not body.... it works....

Re: God Damn Ticks

I use sawyers tick spray, it has permethrin, shit works, sprayed my ghillie with it too, no ticks yet.

My buddy gets them at our fclass matches, everyone wonders why I show up in my hunting clothing... Guess who doesn't have a tick related disease, the jackass shooting in a ghillie suit that's who

While the chemical approach is less than appealing it is the only scientifically proven method of control. Besides...everything is "toxic." It's just a matter of dose. Heck, alcohol, nicotine, salt, clorine (in our water) and et cetera are all "toxic" in the proper dosage. Anyway...the point is...you're correct that chemicals on our skin and clothes isn't ideal. The hazard associated with their use, however, is FAR less than the hazzards associated with not using them.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

They are really bad over her in Washington this year. We went for a walk last night at a friends place and we all had them on us.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

try this

I wrote a post just a couple of weeks ago about pregnancy and pest repellent. While I took no real position on the matter I did strongly emphasize that a DEET free product would be much more intelligent to use…for anyone! It didn’t stop comments and even complaints about my indiscretions regarding the use of DEET. The ultimate “try it I dare you” though came from a wonderful company that is both a sponsor of my blog and a good resource for gardeners and micro-homesteaders; Liquid Fence.

The Liquid Fence Company manufactures a line of innovative, eco-safe and cruelty-free animal repellents and lawn products, including Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent — the No. 1 selling deer and rabbit repellent in the country. I came across them through another blog, Jenn’s Gardening Spot. It was there that I told a story of my experience with garden rabbits and ended up winning a lovely prize pack. And thus began my love for all things Liquid Fence.

So back to DEET. Once I wrote the post I was contacted by Liquid Fence and sent two packages of Liquid Net all-natural insect repellent.

Liquid Net® is completely DEET free and is made from all natural, pleasant smelling ingredients like lemon grass, cedarwood, and citronella oils. Applicable by convenient towelettes, and pump-sprays that fit in pockets, purses and backpacks, the non-greasy insect repellent is easy to use and as far as I am concerned 100% effective. Now I won’t say that when I applied the repellent the insects just hovered around this bubble I seemingly wore. Rather, they just didn’t bother me. I am typically used to a little OFF! wherein I smell like a bad Boy Scout adventure and the more I sweat, the more they swarm. Not with Liquid Net though. I used the wipe to cover my arms, neck, and ankle area, and then truly just forgot about it. It was easy to though. After 3 hours outdoors working I still haven’t received a bug bit.

So let’s review. Liquid Net The Ultimate Insect Repellent is:

All Natural - All natural ingredients including lemon grass, cedarwood and citronella oils
Safe - 100% DEET free, safe for the entire family
Hassle-free - Long lasting and non-greasy
Smells Great - Natural, pleasant scent
Effective – In independent lab testing, Liquid Net actually outperformed common DEET repellents
Guaranteed - 100% Money-back Guarantee!

This is the good stuff to kill ticks. It's sprayed on clothing for up to 2 weeks of protection. Contains Permanone.

Re: GOD DAMN TICKS

thats one of the reasons i hate going in the woods during the hot months. one reason i gave up bow hunting.

Hate the bugs .

My best results for keeping the chiggers off is heavy dosing on your skin at your waist (2 in above and below), and ankles (up most of the calf), then spray your boots, pants bottom, and around your waist. obviously hit your arms, hands and neck. This will keep the chiggers off and most other bugs too. The chiggers especially like the areas of sweat and close clothes contact like your waist and sock tops.

Yes, I am quoting myself. Human typhus outbreak noted in Orange County California this week, supposedly linked to fleas from feral cats. Typhus has a 10-60% mortality rate folks. I feared an epidemic of this type, or other flea-borne disease, and two days after my post here it is...starting.

New comments on Lyme from today's Medscape mentioned in the other Lyme thread.
