Need help with trigger for FN SPR

Happy Memorial Day Weekend to all. I recently received a FN SPR from Tactical Coordination and am very happy with the work he's done. With that said, I've had trouble getting consistent 5-10 shot groups with the rifle. On a few occasions I've put 3 shots (damn near) through the same hole (first 3 shots)then a flyer .75" away. This occurs with 168 or 175 FGMM.

I'm coming from a Sako TRG and the trigger spoiled me. I prefer a 2 stage trigger, but I'm also comfortable with a Timney single stage (having used on on a rem 700 hunting rifle for 17 years+).

I'm attributing my difficulty grouping to the trigger (pull weight and trigger break).

While I prefer a two stage, I've decided to put a Timney (don't have experience with other single stage triggers) on this FN SPR. I would prefer the nickel plated model, but I'm unsure which model to buy (with or without safety) and who to order it from.

I'm a novice and prefer a ("do it yourself") setup, but ultimately want the best possible trigger for this rifle (hoping to spend $150ish or less.

Thanks in advance..

Great question, as I'm unsure. I've only replaced triggers in ARs and have never done so in a bolt action. When the option listed is "without safety", I assume it means one will use the existing safety. When it's stated "with safety", I assume it means one will replace the existing safety with whatever comes with the trigger (help me out here, which is the purpose of my post). Thanks again....

Re: Need help with trigger for FN SPR

I don't believe Timney offers a safety for the Mod 70. You have a 3 pos safety that has nothing to do w/ the trigger.

Re: Need help with trigger for FN SPR

The 2-lever OEM trigger is a good piece, and easily adjustable. Fiddle with it before spending money for a new one.

Be advised the OEM spring is only safe to ~2.5lb. Below that requires a new spring.

Also: your rifle currently has one of the finest safeties ever created. I am not aware of any aftermarket trigger that will "replace" the safety on the bolt. Even if there was - you wouldn't want it.

I understand. So, this would be the appropriate trigger to order:? timney trigger

I'm using the CG X-Treme trigger in my SPR. It is amazing. Silky smooth first stage then it breaks like a thin glass rod snapping. An excellent piece of hardware!

Thank you. I've fucked with the trigger for some time today, getting it to the point it would slam fire and to the other end where the sear would not engage. While I'm able to get the pull to a comfortable spot, it doesn't break nearly as clean as a very old Timney I have in another rife (it snaps like a thin glass rod would).

Rather than have the trigger worked by a competent gunsmith trying to save 50$ (I don't know any within an hour's drive from me) I've elected to replace the trigger with something I KNOW I like..

Re: Need help with trigger for FN SPR

I should also add, this FN SPR is my first experience with a Win Model 70 Action. I could continue to screw with the factory trigger, but I'm not a gun/trigger smith and do not want to compromise the weapon's inherent safety features..

Understandable. I still suggest buying a lighter spring at your local hardware store, cutting to length, and seeing what you come up with.

Jewell makes a nice trigger for these as well, adjustable from 2oz to several lbs.

Re: Need help with trigger for FN SPR

I believe there are other problems with this trigger as there seems to be an excessive amount of side to side wiggle. Basically, I have a new FN SPR, bedded, badger bolt knob, had the barrel threaded and coupled it with an IOR Valdada.

With all I have into this, it doesn't make any sense to me to try and save $50-75 dollars working the trigger when I can replace it with a better trigger. Especially considering how important a good trigger is.

I do appreciate the feedback and thank you. I asked about the "with or without safety" options, because it confused me. I didn't understand why there would be a "with/without" safety for this rifle as the safety isn't part of the trigger.

See this: without safety

This lead me to believe there was a version "with safety".

Re: Need help with trigger for FN SPR

I have the same trigger on my FN. It does take some time to get properly adjusted but once it is set, it is an excellent trigger. I am getting to where I prefer the feel of my Timney to my Jewell. The Jewell will go much lighter in pull but the Timney release is more crisp.
