RE22 for 107-115gr .243.....why not?

I read lots of reasons to use Reloder 22 for heavy .243

Any reason not to? My barrel should be ready in a couple weeks. I have some 107gr Sierras and RE22 on hand, is there another powder I should look at?

Anyone using 4000MR?

Trying to run about 2950 fps, but I need temp stability so I don't end up disqualified on a hot match day.

Re: RE22 for 107-115gr .243.....why not?

I gave up on RE22 in my 6.5x55 because of temperature instability. Loads ranged from 2750-2850. Most shooting was done on hot days, velocity was dependent on how long the round sat in a hot chamber. No such problems with Hodgdon Extreme powders. Best of luck.

I used RL-22 with 105 amax/vld's and it work great. I never used them in hot weather, I would lean toward Hodgdon powders in H4350 or H1000. I'm using H1000 and getting 2998avg speed with 26" barrel, shoots awesome.H4350 gets around 3040avg speed, second best in accuracy.

I run a wildcat similar to a 6SupLR (comparable capacity to 243Win). I run H100V and get 107SMK@3050fps from a 25" barrel. Seems quite consistent and meters well (small kernels). Most everyone else is running H4350 or H4831 in their 243's, I just have to be different.

Looking at H4350 now.

If I just have to hand off a pound or powder, no worries. If it was .308 I would just experiment with it. I am not real keen on smoking a .243 barrel just working up a load.

Anyone use Varget in the .243?

H4831 or H1000 with heavy 243s. I've had better luck with H4831

Re: RE22 for 107-115gr .243.....why not?

Used Re22 in a 30BooBoo for 1000yd BR. Had to chase my load from spring to summer to fall. It can be mastered but you will almost need to load at the range on match day.

Re: RE22 for 107-115gr .243.....why not?

I ran RL-25 in my GAP Crusader with excellent results. This was George's recommendation so that's all it was fed. I never noticed any temp issues with that load and it was used on hot days shooting matches & P-dogs. Barrel length will also play into the velocity you'll get. What length are you planning to go with? Think between 27 & 28" and you'll see in the neighborhood of 3000-3100fps with the 115s

Re: RE22 for 107-115gr .243.....why not?

Hodgden H1000 is probably the most temp stable powder going. It works well for 105-115. Provides great velocity and accuracy as well. H1000 shows about 1/4-1/2fps per degree of temp change above 65 degrees.

I like RL17 for my 105-107 bullets due to the additional velocity it provides and I use H1000 for 115 DTACS. The RL17 does not work as well for the heavier 115 DTAC.

RL17 is rather temp stable compared to the other Reloader powders. RL17 shows almost no increase until 70 degrees, then it increases at a rate of about 1/2-3/4 fps per degree of temp increase.

RL22 and RL25 increase at a rate of 2-3 fps per degree above 60 degrees.

No powder will be absolutely stable. Your best bet is to just map your instability and adjust for it. Shooter and the new Applied Ballistic app can account for it.

I was shooting out to 1400 last weekend. We started shooting at 10:30am in 67 degree temps and by 3pm it was 91 degrees. My data tracked perfectly in the program and it accounted for the velocity changes. I continuously monitored the program and made changes to my dope and my impacts at 1k never strayed more then 5" vertical on a LaRue target.

H4350 and H4831SC are also excellent choices for the 105-115 243 pills as is Ramshot Hunter and Magnum.

Re: RE22 for 107-115gr .243.....why not?

I have some RL17 in the cabinet that I was using with 208gr .308. I may give it a go.

The barrel is going to end up in the 25-26" area. I am having it setback so it depends on how much the smith needs to chop.

When I have a new barrel turned it will probably be 26" so I can still fit it in my hard case for flights.
