I have made my path as an Electrician and make a shit ton of money doing it. But the reality of it is I HATE doing electrical work. Started doing while in college and the money got to be better than what I was going to college for and has been way better the last few years including a couple years over 225k.... Would rather go be a door greeter at walmart then do any kind of electrical work anymore... (If you understood how much I hate dealing with people you would understand this comment better)

Generally the people that love what they do are really good at what they do. I guess I enjoyed it at first which is why I got real good at doing it....

Figured I would throw it out there cause I am sure I am not alone on this one.

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

I wouldn't like my job if it paid that much, but I would sure hate it alot less. About 7x less

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

I think the real key to work is leveraging your experience and cash flow so that you can transition to something that's more sustainable and enjoyable long-term. If you're doing electrician work in A-stan, then I'd guess you're working for FLUOR or some similar outfit. While I am on R&R right now, I've spent the last year in Afghanistan and love what I do, although my op-tempo is unsustainable for my family.

I approach the problem set by saving the money earned to leverage this time to shift jobs or even career fields. I think everyone has to work jobs they don't enjoy some time in their lives. The smart ones take the financial white space they've gained and go back to school, start their own business, etc. That's the advice I'd give you is play the long game, and start planning your transition into a new career.

Never been hard up enough to have to go work for Fluor, KBR, or Dyn...... I can work at home and make the same most of the time.. Overseas experience is with Perini Management and currently work for myself picking up jobs from ECCI, Arkel, Lakeshore, and a few others pulling asses out of the fire....

An Example of this is I went to Dubai on my way to head home the other day and got a call from one of them to make a termination on a pole in Bastian.. 3 Days all expense paid and $1500/day...

Upside is decent money, downside is no financial stability... I.E. Worked all Jan, Feb but didn't do allot in March and did some in April. May was busy and plan on hanging out back here in TX until another ass on fire pops up to put out.

Still, don't get wrapped around the axle about who you're working for. The bottom line is that you don't like it and that it's unsustainable, right? "Making good money" is what got you to where you're at, so be very wary any time you justify staying on another month. I know dudes who have been at BAF for 5 years doing 2 months on, 1 month off and have no clue what they're going to do once Fortress American draws down. The more pressing issue is that the market will be flooded by KBR, Dyncorp, Fluor, and everyone else seeking work in the States by then. I'd start looking now before the rush.

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

I worked 6 in 6 out last year. Going to try to do the same this year. Your right about the inrush from the big 3 when uncle sugar pulls the plug which is already happening. Even my 6 last year wasn't for uncle sugar and had no US gov money involved in the project. Big oil is the next phase. I set up the first permanent man camp inside the Iraq Majnoon oilfield last year. I also had the pleasure of setting up a couple of Villa's in Herat for Texas A&M for some Geology teams.

Thought about finishing up the last of my MGIB to get my TXCLOE or whatever it is over at a college near here. My wife has a friend who pulled it out and is a Sheriff's Deputy around here.

Most likely will just bitch about hating my job and marching on though.

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

If you make your interests and hobby your work, you will never work a day in your life.

    BULLSHIT.

You will start hating your hobby, mine was working on cars.

I agree with that 100%. I have had several really good opportunities to work in the gun industry, and I've reluctantly turned them all down. I'm close enough to the business and I don't want to be any closer. This is my escape from work, and I know enough of the inside dirt that I don't want to be any more inside, because I'd get to hate it pretty fast.

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

It's ironic, at best. I am GRATEFUL for my work. Having a "meaningful" job and work to do is a daily blessing. I might be damn near suicidal without it. Relatively speaking, it is cush.

    BUT...

After 20+ years I am TIRED of IT. I pick myself back up with "Just gonna do this for five more years...", even if it isn't true.

I really need to spend more timing hoping and praying I and "it" are still there in 5 years!

I used to love working on cars and since being a mechanic I can't stand working on my own shit. I actually like my current job I just don't like the guy I work for. He has no management skills, organization and wants to have me do his job for him. Lately he won't offer me extra ot or hardly talk to me because he doesn't like what I have to say. He asks my opinion then gets all pissy when it's not what he wants to hear.

    So true...
I worked as an auto mechanic, then marine (yacht) mechanic for many years. Actually I still like it, but am glad I switched to another field.

For last 5 years been working as an upper cervical chiropractor, which can be tough in a different way. There is pressure helping people who are in pain. Transitioning was not that hard, still trying to solve complex problems with a limited set of clues.

However having to work on beautiful women every day is a lot more fun than working on diesel engines 5 day a week.

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

I'm in construction and have made a decent living from it for the last 25 years. I switched over to a more technical specialty with less physical and more using my head, but it still gets old fixing other peoples problems day after day. It is honest work and pays well, when your working. Sometimes stupid hours are involved, but hey, at least no one is shooting at me.

Absolute fact. Seems to be a trend with mechanics. Most people hate their jobs, that's life. The money is too good for me now considering I started working straight out of high school, but eventually that will wear off(starting to now) and I'm am changing careers altogether in some other state even if it pays half what I make now. And no, I not making anywhere near 225K either.

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

I like what I do when I am given room to do it but being hired for DAY shift, put on SWINGS and asked to babysit servers for $36 an hour is not fun.

It pays the bills but it sucks.

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

Everything is great for maybe 3 - 7 years. After that anything burns me out and I require major change. I think a job that offers upward promotions within a field is good for maybe ten years or so, which is my goal to do from graduation to retirement. Ten years after graduation, a 74% retirement plan, open up a little cigar shop and basically fuck off until I die

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

Black start, Paralleling, an Combined Cycle Power Generation was my long suit most, of my working years. Enjoyed most every day, an learned as much as I could along the way.
Now I really enjoy the rewards of those past days. Being retired is positively great, but making more in a day(than per week while working)from Consulting work, for start ups, or projects that went wrong from the drawing board, is the icing.
Grandad always said, "Learn your life's work from Cradle to Grave, and someone will pay handsomely for your minds ability, when the body says no.

When you do your normal job but have people blowing up IED's around you - $225k doesn't seem like a whole lot (So they tell me).

I turned down a 250k 1 year contract offer during Iraq, no way..

I loved my job as a firefighter and even an engine captain. Since promoting up to Asst. Chief I find myself missing firefighting and hating the politics of upper management. I can't say I hate my job but I liked it better amongst my guys.

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

When I was over there, one of our junior elisted was offered a job (after he got home) working as a commo specialist for KBR with starting pay at $180,000/Yr. The retard turned the offer down; he wanted to go to school when he got home.

A very true statement. I used to love to workout, so I thought, "why no get certitifed in personal training? That way I can train others and help people better themselves and I can work in a gym and get free memebership." That was a terrible idea; now I hate training people and I hate going to the gym.

LOL it isn't about being a private contractor or not, that I hate. I hate Electrical work in general. Doesn't matter if its in the states or in some shithole country.

Do the Enlisted men get paid shit? Yes they do....

Do I know if they are happy with their jobs? Not a clue....

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

I'm fortunate to love my vocation (engineering). That doesn't mean that I've loved every engineering job that I've had. There is a difference.

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

As a fellow sparky I can understand the hate people part of the job to a point. Nothing like change orders, people that can't make up their mind, engineers that have no clue how stuff gets installed, and design it in a way there is no way to do it that way, people that tell you what to do ever though they have NEVER even seen a code book let alone ever hung pipe or poled wire. It really can wear you out.

I find for me at least that it is what I want to deal with, the people, because at least I get some change with that. I find the work gets boring from time to time without the people. You know that point where you don't have to think about how to put something in. For me I would rather deal with the people and put up with their bull shit, then have to go out and hang off the side of a lift and hang a light.

My pops always told me there is always going to be a shitty part of the job, it might be the boss, the work, the people you work with, the people you have to do work for. No matter what job you have there will always be a shitty part, so pick a job were the shitty part is something you can live with.

O and a side note I would LOVE to make that kind of money. You make more than I will in 3.5 years

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

Sometimes I hate my job especially when idiots fail upward in the company. What keeps me going is when someone asks for something stupid I tell them how we can do it and it will cost extra to do it that way and give them all the reasons why it will cost extra. Then at the very end I tell them how I want to do it and it will be cheaper. They always have a glazed over look and say ok. It is good to be smarter than the idiots you work for.

MBA Master of Business Administration is actually French. It means how to make a company fail and feel good about it. These are the mentally dim that I work with. I would like to call them retards but that makes the mentally handicapped look bad and they are good people.

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

I have a love hate relationship with work. I love my job, but it takes me away from my family a lot and that's the part I hate. Right now it's so busy I come home for 24 to 36 hours once a week and then back out to work.

I am a Sparky as well and was a Machinist in a prior life . Wound up hating both jobs . For the most part people are just frigging idiots and I am tired of building there F-ed up Shit . The company I work for just became a Defense Contractor and I may have the opportunity in the near future to start making 6 figures a year being an Electrician . If this comes to fruition my plan is to hit it hard for the next 5-7 years which will allow me to pay for my Daughters to go to college and come out the other side with a nice bit in savings and everything paid for . Not sure what I will do after that but it won't be either of my other professions . If you ever figure out what your gonna do that will make you happy let me know because I can't figure it out either

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

I understand your point completely. Being without employment and benefits sucks. Only been there once in the past 30 years and the brief period of time was ugly. Today I have a title, a job and benefits. Some days I feel like my job sucks the life out of me and leaves nothing. Thoughts of going back to a simpler time and driving a truck make me smile.

Am I ready to quit..not yet but I am posting on Monster and applying for new opportunity. The day I quit dreaming and planning ahead I will be ready for burial..

And yes turning your hobby into a job will ruin the joy of your hobby. Been there and done that..

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

mines a love hate relationship ,I hate the pay it sucks and most of the idiots but every once in awhile thing go good to make up the difference. Thats being in Law enforcement, been at it 20+ years.

Switchblade you are the man and I like your plan, but add fine straight bourbons and single malts to its the perfect job.

I fix 737s, I love fixing planes, right the first time every time is a way of life, the only thanx we get is the planes flying away, SAFELY, pay is good now, but even when it sucked I still loved my career choice, now I get paid well, but the bureaucracy is getting old, still I don't see myself doing anything else. I hope yall find what makes you happy, but really you should be happy for what you got.

LOL my Father in Law was some sort of Electrical systems tech on navy aircraft for 15-20 years. He is insane with his tools so its fun to fuck with him by moving them around in his toolboxes..... Its crazy cause if one little socket is out of its lineup he knows just by looking.

Good luck on this one bud. Pretty sure there isn't much time left. The door is closing on Afg. There is still work out there but its going to things like infrastructure and other items that the Gov won't be handling. The show is pretty much over just need someone to turn out the lights. There is and will be a fair amount of DOS work which I have done quiet a bit of and will be some left to go around.

When the the Senior VP of the company is invited to one of your team meetings and communicates to your group that the company is headed in a different direction and "it's all about the numbers" and the company view's us, the employees, as "a number" it kind of shoots down any last bit of motivation you can muster up to show up every day to such a fucking shit hole that has everyone stressed out to the max...myself included

I currently enjoy what I do but hate the dumb ass boss I work for. He is unorganized and has absolutely no idea what he is doing and won't listen to other people when they try to help. He is mad at me lately because I know what is going on and he doesn't, also since I yelled at his worthless as buddy that doesn't do anything. I am to the point I am job hunting but I won't give him the satisfaction of quitting until I find something better. I have asked to be transferred to the other shop but my supervisor won't let me go because I help train people and solve his problems.

Re: Anyone else hate what they do for a living?

I had been wondering for 3 years now whether i was liking what i am aspiring to become. I'm going on my senior year in biological sciences, Bachelor of Science, concentration pre-med. Always liked science and still do, yet it is not my hobby, i'm not obsessed with it, like some of my peers. My two hobbies that i enjoy are reloading & shooting, and building computers, modding, and playing games. I don't want to ruin my hobbies though as i know a couple of people that sought professions with those two hobbies. Hell now they don't enjoy it at all. So i've been trying to become a Doctor. And i like to help people but i'm not going to lie and say that it isn't in some form about having a stable job and money. So i had wondered if i was in it for the wrong reasons.

Long story short a week or so ago i got to finally get some experience in surgery and dissected cadavers. I enjoyed it and it was the push i think i needed. Shadowed a cardiovascular surgeon and got to watch him perform a bypass as well as a aortic valve replacement. It was awesome. Scary at the same time because of the amount of responsibility on his shoulders. He called every shot in that room for 7 hours. Always thought i was going to have a real problem with seeing a scalpel cutting on human skin as well, though it didn't phase me. I just kept thinking to myself "this looks like that fetal pig from Bio II" cadavers weren't bad either.

Do i like being a student...hell no it's stressful, boring, and to some extent stupid.

Yep when I learned that I hated working. I believed in the Americsan dream until I was told we were numbers - from that day on I pretty much dictate how hard I work by how hard they pay me....pay me well - I work hard.

Pay me well and lie to me and put me on swingshift for a friggin YEAR and well here I am....

    BULLSHIT.

You will start hating your hobby, mine was working on cars. </div></div>

Agree - Years ago I had a friend who was an audio nut. He got a job at a stereo store (remember those?). Within 2 years he lost his love for his audio hobby.

MBA Master of Business Administration is actually French. It means how to make a company fail and feel good about it. These are the mentally dim that I work with. I would like to call them retards but that makes the mentally handicapped look bad and they are good people.
