So I have had mine for a little over a year now, here is current setup:

Factory Stock
20moa Weaver Rail
Leupold Rings
Bushnell Elite Tactical
Zeroed at 200 yards

And here is my load I developed:
Hornady/FGMM brass (get same exact results with both)
44gr of Reloader 15
Seated 2.836 (2.846 is touching factory box)
cci primers, etc.

With this load I am creating one hole shots at 100 yards, and not much bigger at 200... But at 500 a 3 shot group is measuring around 5 inches for me, anyone else getting this large also?

Is it because of the factory 20'' barrel not being long enough?

Just want some of your experiences and groupings...thanks!

Sounds like you're looking more for troubleshooting that issue than testimonials on the rifle :p

Most precision issues with a setup like yours are most likely due to the soft stock putting pressure on the barrel. Do you put any more downward force onto the rifle than normal when you know you're going to shoot farther?

Another thing that is independent of what rifle you're using but still a consideration with 168's at 500 yds is wind. Are you adjusting for wind? Could it be that there is a breeze opening your groups?

If you're getting 1 hole at 100 yards with the same number of bullets then it's most likely the wind, but from what I understand R700s just about always improve with a more rigid stock too.

*Edit: 20 inch barrel should have no more issues than a longer barrel at 500 yards, it really only slightly decreases the velocity on your bullet and actually can be a little more accurate due to less vibration, but that's less than negligible most of the time.

If he can make one ragged whole at 100 and 200 yards, but not 500, why would it be the stock?

Re: Rem700 SPS Tactical .308 users testimonials needed

OP, any pics of your 500 yards groups?

I swapped my stock on my 308 before firing a shot because I had a sister rifle, the 223 tactical, that provided previous experience. With that rifle (223) it would cut “ragged holes” at 100, at 200 all shots would be touching but rather than land in nice round circular groups they would string. By 300 the groups would open up considerably and the string pattern was evident. Cause, the barrel was coming in contact with the stock and groups were opening due to that, adding to the problem was inconstant pressure on the bipod due to my inexperience, causing even more displacement. Once I replaced the stock all troubles ended.

Well, I planned on switching my stock eventually.. But I guess Ill have to do it sooner.

No pics of the target of discussion, it was just a couple last shots before leaving the range. I will go back this weekend and put some more down range hopefully there will be zero wind like the other day.

Dont use a bipod, sand bags for me..

Re: Rem700 SPS Tactical .308 users testimonials needed

Did you float the barrel?
You have to sand the hogue stock to float the barrel.

My sps tac with the hogue stock shoots fine .3-.4 moa

1.9" @ 420yds

Wind? If you're groups are great at 100 and 200 but open up further away, then possibly its not you or the rifle at all. Just an idea.

I have a 20" barrel 1:12 and it can outshoot me at 600. I don't see how the barrel length would effect such a loss in accuracy. It's my understanding that length equals velocity, not accuracy.

Re: Rem700 SPS Tactical .308 users testimonials needed

There are just too many variables to consider. Your groups at 100 and 200 validate that the load is good for the rifle. Past 300 or so, you have wind, natural point of aim, scope parallax, bipod loading, trigger control and so many other things that can cause the groups to open up. Pics will help to determine a cause (especially if there is stringing.)

Have you shot a SPS Tactical with the houge stock? How can it NOT be the stock.

I had the same type of issues with my SPS Tactical. Changed the stock. Issues went away. It's sooooo common a problem with the houge stock. If you are hunting and shooting off hand, then the houge stock would be just fine. But, if you use a bipod or sandbags (which are better in this case) then you are putting pressure on the barrel as the stock flexes.

These are two shot groups after barrel break in cleaning after every three rounds.
You can see I was walking my windage over. I was using federal fusion 168s.
Shoots really well. I didn't try 500 because I don't trust the factory stock. "mine is tweaked at the edge and it looks like the barrel isn't centered in the channel". I plan on replacing the factory hogue stock ASAP. Then I'll try groups at longer ranges

Re: Rem700 SPS Tactical .308 users testimonials needed

i got an aac-sd .308 and swapped the stock

on average out to 600 yards i get 2 inch groups with fgmm 168

the only trouble i ever have with the rifle is the driver

I have an AAC-SD with the Hogue stock, it shoots better than a lot of "upgraded" rifles I see on here.
