Yes, I am quoting myself. Human typhus outbreak noted in Orange County California this week, supposedly linked to fleas from feral cats. Typhus has a 10-60% mortality rate folks. I feared an epidemic of this type, or other flea-borne disease, and two days after my post here it is...starting.

Holee piffer! And correct me if I am wrong, but Typhus can be carried by a person who shows no symtoms, and never is more than a carrier, and being highly infectious, infect almost everyone they come in close contact with.

This is disturbing news.

Eek, hate those lil buggers. My pups both got lyme disease this past summer. I'm also not much for doctors. That said, I would highly recommend going to one. If you get it treated prior to major joint pain/damage, you won't have much to worry about. Best of luck... </div></div>

This is not the rash of Lyme (erythema migrans), this looks like Tunga penetrans (sand flea, jiggers).

When I pulled the critter off, it sure looked like a deer tick. I didn't get lyme disease unless it takes a long time for it to develop. If I had it, I would think that ring would just radiate out as the infection(?)spread. My guess is the trauma of the bite itself caused the ring with the dot inside. Apparentally, Deer ticks bite much deeper than regular Woodticks. (Dogticks) I did do the doxacycline thing. I have a hard knot there at the bite site. But it is slowly getting back to normal, I think.

There is a test for Lyme Disease.. I took it years ago and was negative although I had some symptoms. Was pretty sure only a brown tick but had a weird ring around it and had achy joints. Ended up doing a round of Augmentin anyway.

The area where I pig hunt is eat up with Lonestar Ticks which aren't known for Lyme disease but these ticks will get very intimate with you. So far I've picked two off my junk. I'm 47 and this is a first. Had one in the crack of my ass at the top, one in the bend of my left arm and one on the back of my neck. These tick bites take a long time to heal and leave a hard knot as one described while healing but slowly get better.

I'm not sure what kind these are but they are everywhere I hunt this year . Elk opener is in 4 weeks and it's 104 . Fires burning everywhere . Not looking good . (election years right ?)

These are dog ticks. Deer ticks are much smaller!

You know if there were 3 on top of your pants there were probably 12+ underneath! Yikes!!

Ticks are really bad this year in KY mainly the dog ticks. I went out today for about 45 minutes to zero a rifle. I took a new in the grass for about 30 seconds to staple up a target and had one on my neck as soon as I got back in the UTV.

On another note, I did try that listerine trick. Took the original, brownish stuff and put it in a spray bottle. Sprayed my clothes down, boots, and hat. Not one tick or chigger the whole day. And damn, did I smell good!!

My uncle just got home from being airlifted to a major hospital because of complications brought on by tick fever... Bad buisness

Say what ya will, most of the fellas will wear panty hose in the field if it's tick season.

best thing I've bought in a while was the "original bug shirt" in the elite series camo and the zipper fly pants. Great ventilation on the jacket and I can say nothing will get through it.

Just wear a ball cap under it to keep the screen away from your face.

Untreated Lyme disease is horrible, almost as bad as untreated syphilis. The best place in the country to have your blood samples sent to is IgeneX.

You do have the bullseye rash, better keep track of this thing.

I hear you, Jeff, I am in Midland and the ticks are horrible! I grew up in NY and never had a tick on me. Now, it is almost guaranteed that everytime I go into the woods, I will have a tick on me somewhere, unless I am wearing my tall rubber Lacrosse boots. Ticks won't climb up those.

It's not the deer ticks I mind, it's those little spawns of Satan that you cant even see that end up burrowing in your skin at your sock tops. your underwear seams, etc. GOD I hate those things.

Dermacentor variabilis (dog tick)if the female scutum looked white and you are hunting east of Colorado, or Dermacentor andersonii (Rocky Mountain Wood Tick) if the female scutum looked more metallic and west of Colorado or Rocky Mountain States; female on left, males on right. These species cause Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, tularemia, tick paralysis, erlichiosis. This tick's scutum looks white => D. variabilis. Ixodes has a black scutum usually.

I had rocky mountain spotted fever from them bastards, and i got really sick. I almost died, before they figured it out. I wouldnt mess around if you have any syptoms, go to the doctor, i still have problems from that one tick bite.

I have chronic lyme and the treatment I'm currently undergoing is a cast-iron bitch. Never been so sick. If you get a tick bite, you need to assume that the fucker has infected you with something. Treat early and you'll save yourself years of misery.
 
I had my first tick of the year today crawling on my neck. Had to use a magnifying glass to tell it was a tick. I got 6 days of turkey camp starting tomorrow to get some more. I guess I will bring some garlic along to keep them off me, and maybe some listerine in a spray bottle for extra insurance.

Make that two, one under waistband.

Another thought on prevention.
Several Biologists and Wardens who are around ticks often have suggested wearing a thin tight layer of clothing against your skin.
Underarmor or the like, also 100% Deet on cloths and eating Garlic.
 
Ticks and Poison oak, what the fuck did nature create them for??? I've been bit over 120 times by ticks and somehow managed not to get Lymes yet....... Had one on the tip of my pecker when I was two. Family joked that it was my first stiffy!
