A lot of scouts can get a fire going but forget to collect bigger wood and then scramble to get wood while the fire dies...this guy took care of business first.

I know I do not, nor have I ever acomplished the feat of starting fire in the rain. I have used the bow string method years ago in boy scouts. I feel comfortable that if need be I could make one again. I do normally carry a lighter as a smoker and most of my packs, bags, gear, have some sort of fire starter. Weather that be just some matches in a ziplock, strike fire flint, or a lighter.

Looks like he just had the camera in under the tarp shelter, not the fire. There are some times you just have to use some type of shelter besides bark housing to keep your <span style="font-style: italic">mise en place</span> dry, on account of the volume of rain. Quinault was one of those places for me.

I recently purchased a fire steel, and have made up a bunch of cotton balls covered in petroleum jelly. They light really good, I have become a pyro lately

Dryer lint rocks.

Bic lighters and Zippo's don't work well above 10K feet but Cricket lighters do.

Good presentation of getting to the inner dry wood.
Not knocking him but he struck the flint/fire steel/ ferrocerium rod incorrectly.

EVERYBODY want to hold the rod and MOVE the knife or blade to produce sparks.
This creates a HIGH potential of knocking your tender bundle away or apart, as the motion is towards the tender bundle.

The expert way to do it is hold the blade IN PLACE and yank the fire steel AWAY from the tender. Same sparks, no danger of molesting the tender bundle........

Doc makes a good point but know that burning dryer lint is in fact toxic. Don't breath the fumes.

Just out of curosity......... why would you not use the bark as a rain shield until it got really going........ just saying a tepee of bark would have worked like a rain suit

gotta make sure you have airflow in there or else the fire will die out....you could possibly do a half teepee

still a big fan of using flint and lint...the vaseline cotton balls are cheating they are so easy

I also like to use a mag bar when i can afford the extra weight, especially with wet stuff. a small pile of mag shavings burns HOT.

Thanks for that! I have been doing it all wrong and have on several occasions knock the fire out with the knife. I'll try your method next time...

I use dryer lint in an egg crate section filled with parrifin wax works really well and lasts for a good while if your having trouble getting the tinder to light

in my hunting pack is a one gallon zip lock full of dryer lint just so i dont have to work that hard to get a fire going
