I dig it.

Krylon, for some colors, some duracoat I had for others and flat clear duracoat seal. All except the clear was sponged on.

Oh man that's sweet. Any tips?

Also that stock is pretty cool too. What's it if you don't mind me asking?

Re: Did my first camo job.

Dude! That camo is SWEET! You did an excellent job. When I clicked on this thread I was thinking, what stock has this guy ruined with some duracoat, but Im very impressed.

Re: Did my first camo job.

wow that looks sharp i always wanted a camp stock but for the change in season colors i would need 4 in ny lol

Re: Did my first camo job.

Thanks fellas.

Honestly, i think it looks better in person......crappy cell phone pic doesn't do it justice.

In all honesty though, using a spong technique you really can't mess up......it's supposed to look a bit sloppy.

I used 5 colors total, laid down a 3 color base coat, random blotchy patterns in black, green and brown. And then started sponging on those colors to break up outlines plus I added FDE and a lighter green for smaller highlights.

At first I wasn't happy with the way it was coming out but I've sponged painted bathrooms and kitchens before and remembered I never do until the end. Thats because it never starts looking good until you've built some layers up.

It starts getting deeper looking with small bits of colors coming through 3/4 layers deep. Then go over certain areas heavier with clear specific outlines. Vary pressure and amount of paint as well.

The other mistake I've seen people make is to just splotch the easy to get to areas, they don't get all the odd angles, then it comes out looking unfinished.

As long as you picked colors you like it almost impossible to mess this technique up.

Don't forget to clear coat.....can't put my finger on why but it looked twice as good after I clear coated it.......just kinda brought it all together better.

Re: Did my first camo job.

Looks great, and thanks for sharing your technique. Think I'll mess around with that a little, as I really like it. Also love that stock.

Re: Did my first camo job.

If you're just posting photos for the sake of making people jealous....it's working.

Re: Did my first camo job.

Looks great! I really like the idea of a duracoat base layer then sponging the other colors on top. If you let the duracoat cure really well then you can sponge with krylon and if you aren't happy with the results, or it starts to wear, stip it with acetone and start over. Nice job.

I dont know, based on the time involved, prep work, waiting for layers to dry yada yada yada......$75-$100 depending on the stock?

Re: Did my first camo job.

Great job. I'll be ordering some duracoat soon for my 700. I hope it turns out this good.

Just can't decide if I want to paint over my molded marble but your stock looks so good. I'll PM ya if I decide to and see what your doing then.

Re: Did my first camo job.

I like it. Almost ATAC looking but with more dark colors involved. It will blend in well in our neck of the woods.

Re: Did my first camo job.

That is seriously the best home done paint job I have seen so far.

I want to do the same thing to my stock but I don't want to use Duracoat the first time in case I screw it up.

Re: Did my first camo job.

Looks great. I've bought the paint, etc, and started to start the job a couple of times. I'm still reluctant (scared) to F up my descent lookin desert paint.

Re: Did my first camo job.

Very nice. The sponge definitely gives it some depth. So you started with dark colors first then lighter colors and put clearcoat on at the very end? I've never tried anything like this before but it sounds like you've been practicing on rooms in your house. Haha.

Re: Did my first camo job.

That does look awesome very clean and different from your normal camo jobs.

Thanks guys!

As far as when to apply the different colors, you cant really do from dark to light, or vice versa. You want to switch it up and have dark colors over laying light colors, light color over dark. This random multi layering is what gives it some natural depth.

Also use as many colors as you want as long as they compliment each other. It just adds to the dimensional quality.

I can wait to do the next one.....Ive got some ideas that will make it even better.

Re: Did my first camo job.

Does the clear coat make it shiny at all? Its kinda hard to tell in the pics.

Re: Did my first camo job.

Not shiney at all. The duracoat clear coat is flat.

Ive not used it yet since doing the paint job, so Im unsure of durability but Im sure it will be fine. The nice part about a paint job like this is how easy it is to fix.
