Middle of the night; dude clearing his house and smokes a black bear (sound only works in full screen for some reason):

Thoughts off the top of my head:

Interested in knowing what ammunition he used. Not a big bear, but they’re tough, and usually don’t go down easy.

Nice work on the shooting; looked like good CNS shots right off the bat. Good job. However, less than stellar job clearing the house. If that had been an actual armed intruder, he’d have gotten smoked.

Bonus points for having a sling, but he should have had his support arm through it… much harder to have your weapon taken away from you and used against you. No stone to throw though, he did better than I probably would have done in the middle of the night.

Speaking of black bear, I read one was sighted in northeast Texas.

Shame too. Black Bear is a protected endangered species in Texas. Other states support a bear population and sometimes the youngster wander really far.

If you have spent much time around bears, pretty easy to tell one vs a human by sound.
Take you about 5 seconds of listening.
I have also had the joy of being around a lot of methheads and junkies.
    Very different sounds.

A bit over a decade ago, my neighbor lady 150 yds away and a bit up the mountain left her glass door open, just a screen door there after baking and was upstairs doing something.
Big black bear helped himself onto her deck and through the screen into her tasty smelling kitchen.
    Police were called.
Sheriff deputy responded and spotted the bear down the hill and about 80 yds from my place in the brush between pines on the hillside. Grabbed his duty AR and 3 rounds quick dumped the bear right there.
I think they were issued a 64 gr bonded bullet.

Makes me question why one of my SBRs is not my go to home defense weapon in my mind..instead of the 9mm in the nightstand.

Why not both? Well, in .45ACP vs. 9mm, but that’s the idea…

…though my preferred HD firearm is one of my other SBRs with a 300BLK upper loaded with subs; always with a can.

And a sling and a light.

It doesn't fit in the nightstand.

Fort that, I have a SecureIT Flat Box 47" under the bed safe. I punch in the code and voila, it opens, giving me my Mossberg Shockwave. I could also put an AR-15 in there if I wanted to. But I'd need to consider some kind of "frangible" ammo for the AR-15 if that were part of the HD/SD plan. I mean, all I really shoot with it is 5.56 XM855 Green Tip. A bit much for HD, I think.

Tim Wells kills a black bear with a blow gun. Skip to 5:13 to see the kill shot.

There were times in the PRNJ (in my neck of the woods) where we saw black bears roaming about. I mean, pretty well developed woods, as it were. My PUD had over 584 units in it. Still, the bears came.

As a result, the State did authorize a brief "Bear Season" if the population got too big. over the year.. They'd distribute tags which hunters could use to take bears, etc. Quite controversial as each authorized bear season would trigger the animal rights activists, of which there were quite many. I wonder what those activists would say if a bear mauled one of their kids that were out at play (and there were playgrounds in my PUD).

IINM, there are places in FL (Sanford/Orlando area) where they raise black bears, They post warning signs, etc. to be alert for them. Hopefully, I'll never see one in my present area. So far, all we've had to deal with are feral hogs that roam about.
