Re: Savage 93r17gv

as a fellow savage 17hmr owner i'll make one peice of advice...

when you find a lot number of ammo your savage loves, buy a pile of it!

i'm under 500 rounds of my current happy batch.. will have to do some more batch testing soon and find another that she likes.

Re: Savage 93r17gv

I hear you - as you can see in the pic I bought a few different ammo types to try. Everything I've read on this model says 17s shoot best but the first store I went to only had 20gr game points from cci. Was worried it would be the only ammo I could find so I bought a box. Next I found federal premiums in 17. This is the round I'm excited to test.

Re: Savage 93r17gv

See the Hornady V-max, Feel the Hornady V-max, Be the Hornady V-max. Naaa Naa Naa Naa Naa Naaa Naaa Naaa.

Re: Savage 93r17gv

Couldn't find any locally - the Fed Premier is loaded with the vmax

Re: Savage 93r17gv

it really likes all the hornady vmax i have shot through it. the cci's and federal offerings have not performed as well. dont get me wrong, they might not group as tight as the hornady, but still are effective.

Re: Savage 93r17gv

I use a Savage 93r17 for hunting small game here in PA. I used to use Hornady V-max on grey squirrels but it was just too damaging to the meat so I might try some 20gr FMJ's this year.

.
FMJ not good idea (especially since not permitted for game in pa) IF they even make'm. Might want to try the xtp not as violent on expansion an still a good bullet. But love the 17's accuracy for little critters even though it can be a little mean sometimes.

Re: Savage 93r17gv

Mine preferred the 20gr Vmax Hornady ammo the best, I tried just about everything I could get my hands on and the 20's were hands down best.

Good luck with the rifle. I enjoyed mine, I just wasn't a fan of 17HMR ammo cost.

Re: Savage 93r17gv

I've been thinking real hard about picking one of these up. Looking forward to your range report!

Re: Savage 93r17gv

Seperated the stock from the BA and removed the cosmolene (sp?) from the BA. I'm having trouble removing the bolt, yes I've read the owners manual, but it's doesn't want to come loose. Tried safety on, safety off. No dice just yet. I'm going to tinker a little bit more then take some pics of the internals for y'all.

Hoping to shoot this weekend.

Re: Savage 93r17gv

First range report bottom line: she shot pretty well - so far so good.

Before I went to the range I took a closer look at the bolt. Some rough finish work, a few nasty nicks and some strange milling marks.

While i wasnt expecting this i thought for the price point its understandable.

So i cleaned everything up, specd the action screws to 12lb and headed out.

I shot 5 break in rounds before shooting the 5 groups pictured below. I didnt bother bore pasting or anything like that. Just ran some wet (G96 Lube) and dry patches down the barrel between the rounds.

It was damn near impossible to bore site this rifle. The .17 cal tube just doesnt transmit enough light (at least for my eyes). So I shot for both groups and sight adjustment. Each group is a five shot group and I started from the bottom left, then bottom right. Top left, top right and shot the final center target last. (The picture below is on its side in the thread. For whatever reason even though i have the image correctly sided on my computer my uploader converts it so just imagane you were holding it with the title correctly at top. Sorry)

I pulled two shots on the top left target so you can chalk that one up to shooter error.

I shot the groups on a half ass work bench that wasnt wide enough to support my elbows or deep enough to place a rear bag. It was hot and dank feeling and I had sweat dripping into my eyes the whole damn time. I would have stayed longer and shot more but I wasnt real comfortable.

All 5 5 shot goups were at 50 feet at an indoor range using Federal Premium 17gr VMAX.

Hope to get more out of her once we get out doors. I really like this gun.

Thanks

Re: Savage 93r17gv

I'm guessing it has the Accu-trigger from your pictures. You can clip off a coil or two and somewhat polish some of the Accu-trigger surfaces to get better trigger pull. I did this and it worked for me for a few years with no issues.

I recently put a Rifle Basix SAV-RAT in mine and it's much better. However, since my 17 is my small game rifle, I do miss holding into the wide ass trigger that is the Accu-trigger over the SAV-RAT but there's no comparison on any other results of a trigger swap.

You can polish down some of the harsh surfaces. Really for a sub-$300 gun, you can't expect too much, but I will admit, Savage can improve.

The guns themselves are badass if you can look past the few burs and shitass mag releases

Re: Savage 93r17gv

That's correct the 93r17gv come with the accu-trigger. I consider myself somewhat of a trigger snob. None of my rifles have stock triggers. Jewell, gap tuned and Kidd. I must say the accu-trigger rocks. No it doesn't break like a glass rod. The is the slightest amount of creep but it feels very repeatable and solid. You really do need to make full flush contact with the trigger shoe because of the safety but that just reinforces proper shooting technique (straight back)

Thanks for the rifle basix info though - maybe when I get a little bored I'll try it out.

Shoot 'em in the head?

It's what I do with cotton tails, makes cleaning them easy too with the body intact. Maybe I'll change my tune when I try for squirrels this year. Haven't been able to find anywhere to hunt them where I live so far though... other than those in the complex that my wife gets in trouble with the HOA for when she feeds them peanuts.
