Well....you know...I once had a thought.

So, I mounted my newbie Vortex on my Savage 6.5 Swede caliber....and I'm thinking...OK...the scope needs to be "tilted" down in the front so that I will have a bunch of "room" to move the reticle "up" for making a 900 or 1,000 yard shot.

Sooooo....I mount the scope, and once I get it bore sighted I didn't pay attention to how high the turret was.....Sooooo I zero it in and it shoots great at 200 and 300 yards.

But then I look at the turret and it's almost at the top. Then I search the inter-woven-net to find a pic of an actual scope mounted on a 20 degree cant (I'm using Burris Zee's) and that's practically impossible. (I'm a "I need to see a picture" kind of guy)

So....I figured I'd post this and let the world know that I can't be the only "reverse scope mount dumb ass" out there.

I mean......right? Right? Not just me? Right?

Well....maybe?

Dave....Errr.....Ralph.

Wait you put the mount on backwards and took away 20 MOA instead of adding it?

Damn!!! I even posted ass-backwards what I did ass-backwards!! You would think I would have screwed up enough to just fall over and get it right!!!

I mounted the scope tilted up in the front. Not down. If I would have mounted it tilted down....this post would never be here.

Damn...damn...damn....crap.

Ed,,..no Ralph.

Re: I can't because of the cant ...backwards

Yeah.....somewhere in my tiny grey matter, I was thinking that if the scope is 20MOA higher in the front, then in order to be on target at closer ranges (like 100 yards) the cross hairs would have to be lower than the center in the scope.

Thus giving me more vertical adjustments upwards to make longer shots.

For some reason I can't understand why this thinking is wrong.

Don't sweat it....You're not the first to make that mistake.

I mean, come on, doesn't it seem like it should be higher in the front....you know, ramp that thing up there so you can see and shoot farther! lol!:)

It's not that bad, at least you didn't put the scope on backwards!

Re: I can't because of the cant ...backwards

Sometimes you learn things better by doing them wrong the first time, then right the second time. That was all you were doing?

We've all made dumb mistakes, luckily most of us live to tell them.

What you need to ramp up is the barrel, not the scope.

Re: I can't because of the cant ...backwards

he was saying that sarcastically....

but what rifle was this on? i'm lucky cause the 700 action has a different mount profile front to rear...so i CAN'T make the mistake haha! Must be a savage!

Re: I can't because of the cant ...backwards

At least you had the weapon pointed in the right direction, so you didn't screw EVERYTHING up

He's not?

Re: I can't because of the cant ...backwards

Are you guys telling me the big fat part of my new Vortex 6-24x50 doesn't point towards my eye??? I mean....I thought when I screwed on the sunshade....that's what kept the sun out of my "shootin eye". Well....that and the big blood bubble that won't go away 'cause my cro-magnum forhead keeps gettin whacked during recoil.

But then....I keep hearing that hunters are "tough" So...I just march on.

Yes it's for real. I though of it like I would an open sight or a peep sight. You know....the more "up" travel you give it...the longer range it can shoot.

So....I'm thinking....hey, I have to cant the scope "up" which will drop the cross hairs down to zero at 100. At first blush it sounds logical.

Then when you put it all together.....you realize your own genius has outdone yourself.....and your quick wits have out-witted yourself.

So, the best thing to do is admit your human, and drink.

Or....maybe it was just an evil plot to drink? After shooting and checking the weapon was clear of course.

Re: I can't because of the cant ...backwards

Davemuzz,

Don't feel bad. We have all made mistakes.. the important thing is to learn from them. Now you will have a much better understanding of the relationship of rail cant and making more of the scopes elevation range available for use.

Even the so called "pros" screw up sometimes. On two separate occasions I have seen the rail installed backwards on a Navy Mk15 rifle, directly issued from Crane! I was dumbfounded when I looked at it after the student ran out of elevation travel at about 600 yards. I removed it, turned it around, dialed 60 minutes back down, and sent the student to re-zero at 100 yards. He was only off his original zero by 1 minute! On the second occasion, I caught it during the "fam" portion of the curriculum. Now I always check ever students rifle before they get the scope mounted and bore sighted.

Re: I can't because of the cant ...backwards

No you are not the only one to do this; or you will be the last!! A good buddy of mine did the very same thing on his new Savage. After almost running out of elev. he figered it out and made the switch. No big deal it can happen even to the best of us.

Re: I can't because of the cant ...backwards

Look at it this way... At least you had a good cheek weld!

Make no mistake, most of us have done worse.

Re: I can't because of the cant ...backwards

VJ,

Read the post at the link. After looking around their site and at his time and number of posts there it looks like ole Dave fits right in.

No use trying to argue or reason with him, been proven here on the famous "shim" thread.

As for continuing, he will eventually sink into the archives to be replaced by the next one of that ilk.

PS, they are good entertainment.
