About 6 months ago I picked up a Remington 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD model in .308 froms Buds. Alot of the reviews I read said it was a great, accurate rifle but the stock was pretty flimsy so I upgraded to an HS Precision stock inleted for a Badger DBM bottom metal and Accuracy International 5 rounf mag that I also put on right away and a Harris bi pod. I Used an EGW 20 moa rail which has great reviews and is much cheaper than most and Leupold Mark 4 rings. I just upgraded the scope on it to a Leupold Mark AR 6-18x40 mildot that I got an amazing one time kind of deal on brand new.

Today was my first day taking it out with the new scope on it, I had all 500 yards of the range to myself at Caribou Gun Club in Le Sueur MN it was 82 degrees and there was a 2-5 mph wind at my face. I bore sighted the rifle and got on it on paper then sighted it in with 2 more rounds from sand bags. I shoot Federal Gold Medal Match 175 grain Sierra Match Kings out of it and it has always done pretty good so I knew if I didn't get good results it was because a terrible hang over. I took my first shot for a 3 shot group at the 110 yard berm and flinched and made a flier so I grabbed an extra round to start over. I was expecting to shoot like this all day now because of my night before and lack of sleep but I managed to put the next 3 shots into a fairly tight group I just took a pic instead of saving the target to measure it the squares are 1 inch but I am sure most all of you know that.

After that I decided to check out the mil dots having never used them and my Strelok Ballistics Calculator at the furthest berm which is 496 yards. This was my 2nd time ever shooting at a range further than 225 and last time I wasn't sucessful at getting on paper at that time. I plugged in all the numbers into the calculator as close as I could get them without having a chrono or knowing the humidty or pressure and used the reticle feature that shows me where I need to hold at that range for elevation and wind. I fired 5 shots down to the target and could hear them smack the wood but I didn't know if I was hitting the paper or not. When I drove out to the target I saw 5 holes in the paper that I am fairly proud of even though I know its not amazing. Like I said I was using hold over on this group as I wanted to check out the mil dots I know when I actually click the minutes in and dope my scope I will be able to tighten my groups up with a lil practice.

I am very happy with the rifle and definitley like the new scope and mildots, but am thinking about a muzzle break for days like today when I have the range to myself and will not be killing everyone else even with ears on. I tried a couple groups from prone just using the bi pod but they weren't anything special so I didn't take any pics of those. Anyone have any tips on how to tighten my groups up?

Re: Range report

dot drill helped my groups tighten up, use those 1" pasties for the shoot n c targets and put 10-20 on the back of a target. use the same amount of bullets as pasties, and try to hit em all. not as easy as it sounds, but will definitely help (even if you don't hit em all) tighten up your groups

have fun!

Re: Range report

Why won't the site let my photos be viewed? They are still on photobucket and still work when linked on other sites.

Re: Range report

Thanks, most forums I use just display the pic by simply putting int the photobucket link.

Re: Range report

Do you have any reason for having your scope so far forward? It looks like it would be exceedingly annoying to try to get a proper cheek weld with it out so far.

Re: Range report

No reason at all, I am new to long range shooting and it just seemed like it was more comfortable like that. Is there a disadvantage to having it further forward?
