Hello everybody, i know this ain't a MN, but it is russian. Does that count ???.

i finally got around to adding an SKS to my gun cabinet. Every time i went to get an sks, i always seemed to find something else i couldn't live with, like Mosins.........................

It's pretty nice, and clean as a whistle. Its got the Ram-line composite side folding stock, pistol grip & lower forearm grip. The scope is some thing designed for the sks. It's labeled model 29, China. Its on a b-square sks scope mount too.

I got it on a trade deal, so no $ outta pocket is nice. A guy at the gun shop said these have been projected to go as high as $1000, with the way mr peanuthead is running things for firearms.

I thought i would scoop this up, before i couldn't afford it anymore, price or trade value wise. However i am ol' skool, not tacticool. Eventually I'll replace the composite stuff & bipod, with a light wood stock, bayonet & swivel mount bipod on the forestock. The scope would be optional. I would like a stock with real sharp woodgrain patterns that stand out.

It does look nice in the cabinet, next to the other russian arms though !!!

Re: My nice lil' SKS

indeed the markings on the scope should be at the bottom, you need to turn your scope 90 degrees to the right.
SKS are a ton of fun.

Re: My nice lil' SKS

Thanks for letting me know, but its already done. I got it that way, i am planning on putting a ler pistol scooe on it. This don't have enough eye relief for my long reach.

Hope you didn't trade away something that actually had any value for that. If you gave anything close to $300 you got hosed.

Your local gun shop guy is blowing smoke up your ass, a cobbled together SKS rig is never going to get $1000 in the next several election cycles. Salesman can exagerate and throw out claims to make sales, but that's flat out lying. No one with any industry credence projected anything like that.

The local smuck just "projected" you would fall for it.

First of all, why would you buy/ trade a rifle with an incorrectly mounted scope? That should be the first sign that something is not right....

Re: My nice lil' SKS

Now this is looking alot better. The blonde stock is off a nickle plated limited edition sks, that was at Boise gun company. I traded the ramline stuff for the stock, hp magazine and some hp stripper clips. I like this Simmons scope alot better also. with this stock being a lil bit longer, I've got correct eye relief.

If i can't get the mag worked out, so it feeds smooth w/o errors, i can revert back to the factory fixed mag.

Re: My nice lil' SKS

Hey crazy ivan, get yourself a case of vodka, & a gallon of vaseline and catch a slow boat back to mother russia. I got the sks like that. I ditched the plastic shit today, & put a real stock on it. I am Indian, i shoot rednecks, hicks and cowboys. You wanna put a cowboy hat on, we'll play Custers last stand.............................

Re: My nice lil' SKS

If you want an SKS that goes up in value, find a nice original condition Russian one with all matching serial numbers from the 40s or 50s.

15 years ago, they were $100, now they often go for $500 or more.

SKS magazines are a great way to turn a super reliable gun into a jam machine. The fixed 10 round box mag works great and you just keep the rest of the ammo on stripper clips to shove in really quick.

Re: My nice lil' SKS

Ha ha ha ha, 15 years ago, the american dollar was worth something. The sks used to be $100. Now the dollar is worth 5 times less than it was then. So it takes 5x the $ to buy one now. Its called inflation. It don't matter what they used to cost, those days are dead.

Re: My nice lil' SKS

I've got a few of the black hawk cheek razors that have the shoe string lace at the bottom, it looks like it would work alright. PM me if you want one, Ill sell cheep..... Looks better without the plastic as well.

Re: My nice lil' SKS

that was the best trade you ever made for the stock. trade the crappy scope for some ammo and you be the best its gonna be

nothing wrong with an sks, but its really ghey to try to make it our to be something its not

Re: My nice lil' SKS

Thats a b-square scope mount& a simmons scope deigned for the sks. I have no worries about it working correctly as designed. If i knew where i could trade the pair for a decent amount of ammo, i may just do that.

Chin weld much?

Re: My nice lil' SKS

Actually its not a problem. I pull it up on my shoulder just like my other rifles, lay cheek on rest and the scope's in perfect line.

I would actually prefer to put a deflector on it, then add an ler scope. I am really fond of scout rifles.

You guys eat too many magic mushrooms, or your leprechauns !!!!!!.
The scope mounts an, sks b-square, & the scope's all the way back.

Re: My nice lil' SKS

I got this in a trade, it didn't cost me anything. Its a lot nicer with a real stock on it, but not as nice as my swiss k31

Re: My nice lil' SKS

I want to know what you traded for it, If it was anything over $450 you most likely got ripped.

Re: My nice lil' SKS

You obviously don't know what the hell your talking about. You must be one of the wee lil' people. Look at the scope in relation to the buttstock. I am 6' 2". The scope has a 5.5" eye relief. Don't preach to the choir, if you can't carry a tune..............

Re: My nice lil' SKS

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: gsbuickman</div><div class="ubbcode-body">The scope has a 5.5" eye relief. </div></div>

Eye relief is irrelevant to the height above the stock. This is not what the guys are saying.

They are more concerned about how high the centre line of the scope is above the comb.

Hence "chin weld"...not cheek weld.

Unless you are anatomically different to the rest of us humans (...better just check you don't live near Roswell...), to get/keep your eye anywhere near the correct place you're going to have to place your jawbone on the butt, not your cheekbone.

This is not unusual on old rifles...I have a couple of 98k's with scopes dating from WW2 that have the same issue.

But...it is not ideal/stable and it is certainly not condusive to consistency of position or accuracy.

You must find it hard to get a consistent and repeatable position on this rifle?

Even small deviations of the eye position relative to the scope from shot to shot will have an effect on consistency/accuracy.

Re: My nice lil' SKS

were not talking about the eye relief, were talking about how high the scope is, it looks too high to get a comfortable cheek weld, for example, here is my rifle:

IMG_20120213_074535.jpg

My scope is about 2.5 inches from the center of the scope to the comb, and even then I feel its a little high.

Your walkin on thin ice here, this thread is about to go sour on you. You dont seem to understand the constructive criticism, and with that attitude it's gonna go from constructive to just plain criticism, and FNG bashing.

As already mentioned, your scope is way too high for anyone but Rocky Dennis. Its not the eye relief but the freakishly high mount.

Re: My nice lil' SKS

Ivan Chesnikov was right:

"HOW ABOUT BAD FIT RECEIVER COVER FOR CHEAP (<span style="font-style: italic">high</span>) SCOPE TO SHOW OFF AT HICK PARTY AND NEVER HIT LARGEST SIDE OF BARN?"

Re: My nice lil' SKS

Use the original mag and you'll never have a problem.

Re: My nice lil' SKS

Actually the scope mount as well as the new simmons scope, were specifically designed for the sks, Just to avoid this issue. It may look higher, but from the center of the scope to the receiver is only 1 3/8".

I've got a big ammo trade going, & i may throw the scope & mount in as a bonus. I would prefer an ler , with a deflector anyway.

Re: My nice lil' SKS

I realize I don't know much about precision rifles.....

but WTF is a "ler"?

Just watching this Charlie Foxtrot unfold. At least he is moving in the right direction. It's almost back to a stock (useable) format.

Edit: NM, figured it out "Long Eye Relief". We used to just call them "pistol" scopes.
