Gunsmithing Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

Final assembly:

I like it when stuff just works. The parts showed up and went together in less than half an hour. Just assemble and be done with it. No drama or "drain bammage."

Looks pretty good I think.

Enjoy,

C

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

Chad,

You do beautiful work. I love your threads with pics. I love seeing your passion and talent come together in something substantial that will last generations. So much of our "talent" is wasted on the disposable in our culture.

Kudos.

John

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

Very nice! Refreshing to see something thats not a Remington 700, Im sure you probably feel the same way sometimes?

Your painter also does incredible work, love the spattering on the stocks.

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

Beautiful work!

Who makes bottom metal for Pr-64 Model 70? And do you have to modify the action to use it.

Thanks

Jerry

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

CDI makes the floor metal. In this case I did not modify the action. I chewed on the magazines to make it work. I don't like to alter an action unless its absolutely required. Especially when it concerns the lower lug abutment/feed ramp features.

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

Chad,

What all do you feel needs to be done to a Model 70 in order to get it fully up to speed?

As I understand it, the locktime is sloooow and aftermarket parts are not so common?

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

Your right. It's what I call "a late model P64."

It has the block on the opposite side of the extractor. The lineage is there though.

Thanks for the kind words.

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

All that beautiful work and it has what looks like an EGW base and Burris XTR rings...

Please tell me thats not the final setup!

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

I didn't mean that as a reflection on you, Mr Dixon it just seems like someone is going all out on this and then they are skimping on parts for the final assembly...

Chad works just fine. </div></div>
Nice work... Mr.
Hopefully my stuff is not to far behind.

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

So awesome of you to take time to throw a thread together like this!
Very..very nice!

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

Oh my god, please don't post things on here like that for my eyes to see.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: C. Custom guns (to me anyway) doesn't mean a box of parts slapped together. I'm so used to doing stuff this way it's second nature now. I've built a great many "franken guns" where actions/stocks were never meant to go together. Where there's a will there's a way. The most psychotic to date was this bugger:

Nesika Model R in 6mmBR fitted to an Anschutz 2013 alloy position rifle stock. Bedded and everything. Getting resin to stick to aluminum in a permanent fashion is tough to do. I was successful with this one though. Just don't ask what the epoxy cost or what it probably did to my liver.

Now that I have the baseline programming sorted out I'll be able to run an infinite number of Winchester actions much, much faster.

The first one is always the biche.

PS:

You live in Slidell? My best friend David Karcher is from there. He's a hell of a shooter. 2002 National Champion (SR) and has been on the Palma team. Federal agent guy now chasing delinquent Navy guys who beat on their wives/kids.

If you ever run into him at a range he's a hell of a good chit.

Didn't you mean an Anschutz 2013 position alloy rifle stock?

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

Any idea on what the contour was for that barrel?

What was the final weight on the rifle?

Great looking work!

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

Wow!

I would like to learn something about how you massage the CDI assy to function w/o mill work on the Win 70 receiver?

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

This by far is one of the best threads I've had the pleasure of reading!

Very nice.

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

Actually, NM has them free ranging at WhiteSands Missile Range.

Dixon, Did he shoot it there or on a game ranch. in NM.

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

They sneak off of White Sands all the time. Mostly on the North end of the range...

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

New Mexico imported a bunch many years ago (60s?). They have been doing very well on the Army's White Sands Missile Range. The picture of the Oryx looks like it's up in the North part of the range or it certainly could be private land.

A number of years ago, the feds at White Sands National Monument said that the Oryx were getting to be pests.

I just can't figure out why he took such long shots -- must have wanted to. I work on the Missile Range and you have to be careful driving around because they'll walk across the road in front of you. I see them quite often and have even seen them on the East side of the Organ mountains.

They have yearly drawings to hunt them on Army property. I've haven't been drawn yet, but a number of my friends have. When you go hunting, you pretty much drive to where they are and shoot one.

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

Don't suppose you snapped any pics of the bolt face did ya?

I've got a Pre64 Magnum Action that's dying to get built and dropped into a chassis...but I gotta save the scratch first.

I too noticed the tool marks all over the action, but they seem pretty bad on my bolt face. Makes me wonder if the guy that sold me the action, had Red Jacket modify it or if it was really just that chewed up.

I'd love to have an artist give it the detail it deserves.

BTW, a side question. What 7mm caliber would you recommend for this beast, since it is a long action with a magnum bolt face. (already have a Shilen Select Match 1:9 on order)

A long action magnum or a short action magnum to run those long pills way out der.

Re: Winchester Pre 64 Heavy Tac Build

7mm Rem Mag all the way.

Easy to load, accurate, and it'll put just about any critter in N. America on its face with one well placed round.

Be glad to help.
