Hello everyone,

I have a Remington 700 LTR lefty in 308 winchester. I had it inletted for a Seekins detachable bottom metal magazine system. The gunsmith I sent it off to has a CNC machine with the specs for the Seekins system. I purchased three Alpha mag type 1 magazines. I'm using Federal Sierra Matchking BTHP Gold Medal Match ammo. For some weird reason, only 1 of the 3 magazines will feed properly though.

I'm not really sure if this is an inletting issue or a magazine issue. My immediate thought is a magazine problem, but I figure they're sensitive to the inletting. I can't visually see any difference between the magazines. With the 2 that don't feed properly, the bolt passes over the round when I try to cycle it.

Should I contact Alpha mag or my gunsmith with this? Has anyone else encountered this?

Re: 700 LTR with Seekins DBM & Alpha mags won't feed

Redhead,

Try posting this in the "Gunsmithing" section, lots of help there.

Re: 700 LTR with Seekins DBM & Alpha mags won't feed

Take a pic of the mags from the back with a round loaded in them. It might be that the feed lips just need a little tweaking to get the rounds to sit higher so that the bolt nose engages them.

Good luck getting ahold of someone at alpha mags; this was the subject of a recent thread that got a little ugly:

A good friend of mine tried these out with his $1200 KRG chassis and it didn't work. Just to make sure, I tried his same mag in my Surgeon Scalpel; no joy.

My wife runs a type 2 alpha mag in her Manners mini-chassis so she can get a longer OAL. She hates how its a tight fit and a little irritated that it won't fit or feed when loaded with 10 rounds. AICS or accurate-mags fit and feed great.

AICS and accurate mags work great and feed flawless in both of KRG and surgeon DBM systems mentioned above. I recommend them. Borrow one from a friend to make sure that it's a magazine vice DBM inletting issue. If it's an inletting issue, your gunsmith will almost certainly make it right, but I'd bet money it's the alpha mag.

you need to tweak the feed lips, take measurements of the one that works and tweak the others to its specifications.

Re: 700 LTR with Seekins DBM & Alpha mags won't feed

The gentleman whom I purchased my rifle from had the exact same issue. He had to alter the mags for them to feed properly. Just do like Rob stated and stick with AI mags. Those Alpha mags get really tight when you load all 10 rounds in. They basically swell and cause you to have to force your mags into the locked position, which is not easy to do when competing. Additionally, the feeding of the first round is always shitty once you get it in (this is even after they have been altered).

Re: 700 LTR with Seekins DBM & Alpha mags won't feed

Thanks for the feedback everyone. This is kind of surprising to hear about Alpha mag problems; I was under the impression that they were top quality. I may have to give AI a try.

I'm putting this in the gunsmith forum as well, thanks. I'll also contact Alpha mag, can't hurt I suppose.

update, fix found

I had the same problems with the alpha mags. I went with AI and JP mags, and never had a single issue.
