Don't see much info on this powder here, whats the verdict on it? anyone use it in a 300WSM or 270? Going to go to my local gun shop to pick up some powder and plan on getting a bit of this along with some more Reloader 17.

Re: 4000MR

I bought a pound of it to use with my 300wsm and 190 SMKs, but I won't know how it runs until I get back in a month or so.
Read some good things about it here and there, so I figured what the hell.
I'll try and post up some report info if I get around to it.

Chose it because it was supposed to meter well, and since I use a progressive I hope it will be consistent... I guess it also gives a nice jump in FPS vs comparable amounts of other powders.?

We'll see I guess

Re: 4000MR

Looking forward to your report, I'm looking to use it with the heavy rounds to see how it performs vs Reloader 17. I'm going to use it with the 208gr. AMAX, 215 and 230 Berger hybrids.

Re: 4000MR

I use it in 6mmRem with 105s, 30:06 with 180 grainers. But have since been getting better results with RE17 for the 6mm, not to mention higher FPS.

Re: 4000MR

Reading some great things about those Berger 215 and 230 Hybrids... Might need to try some out. Would be cool to get a 230 grain bullet to 2750-2800 fps in WSM.

Re: 4000MR

I have no doubt that Reloader 17 can get me to 2700fps, what I want to know is how 4000MR stacks against it. I'm hoping it will be my primary powder for the heavies, but I will definitely be using it for the 270 and maybe the 30-06.

57grs 4000MR with 180 Hornadys give me very good results.

Havent cronod that load but should be over 2700 in a 22 or 24" tube.

Re: 4000MR

This is how it shoots at 300yds.

Re: 4000MR

Thanks for posting that. Not too shabby...
SST bullets? My 7mm mag loves SSTs.

Hey, about how far from max load is your posted load?

It's the 180 Hornady SP like this loaded in a 300Win Mag.

57grs is the max load, but Alliant is using a 180TBBC bullet, and they have a velocity of 2750fps. I was using Rem brass, btw.

Re: 4000MR

Headed to the range tomorrow, loaded up some rounds to try out.
I really don't have time to do a proper load testing session, however I will gain some good initial velocity data with the 190gr Sierras through my 300WSM.

69.8gr N560, virgin win brass, CCI 250 LR Mag primers, 2.88"
68.5gr 4000MR," "
Neither powder charge causes crunched loads.

Also going to chrono SW Ammo's 300 WSM 190gr load; it was EXTREMELY accurate when I zeroed my rifle with it.
My handloads might shoot like shit, but we'll see.

Having no experience with short magnums, I found that 2.88" as an overall cartridge length is max for the action; not the magazine. Using Alpha Type 3s.

Re: 4000MR

I'll be looking forward to your range report, I'm not sure but I think since its a slow burning powder, you might be able to push it a tiny bit more, is your load compressed? I hear compressing spherical powder can cause accuracy issues.

Re: 4000MR

Fired a few rounds through the chrono at the end of the day, I literally had about 5 minutes before I had to take off. Anyway, here's a pic of the brass.
I will say that the sw ammo is very accurate... 1st round hits at 600, 925 and 1020. Targets were 6x6 plate at 600, steel bowling pins at 900 and 1020.
Definitely good stuff.
With at DA of around 10.5k, Atrag gives me this to get to 1020-
SW Ammo 190 = 24.9 moa
N560 190 = 21.2 moa
4000MR 190 = 20.9 moa
Chrono'd my handloads-
70gr N560 = 10rds, avg 3020, spread 40 (cyl powder)
68.5gr 4000mr = 10 rds, avg 3093 spread 20 (ball powder)
SW Ammo 190 = 10 rds, avg 2910 spread 36 ( unk )

I didn't shoot groups at distance, sorry, but I had about 10 things going on at once and I ran out of daylight. You can look at the brass for yourself, I definitely can see that my handloads are hot but they both are within an MOA in terms of vertical dispersion based on where they printed at 1020.
Wind is another matter... haha
NOW;
I will definitely back off about 1.5 grains and go do a real test, however I'm biased towards 4000MR since my progressive throws it well and it seems to give a little more fps vs N560.

No popped primers, slow bolt lift ( by slow I mean light drag, not like two-hands slow) on all the N560 rds and about 60% of the 4000MR. SW Ammo had 3 or 4 slow lifts out of 60 rds fired, temps were 32 deg to 75deg throughout the day.
Again; this is not a real test, obviously, so take it for what it's worth.
My opinion- I like SW Ammo and this 4000MR powder.

Re: 4000MR

3100 is smoking with the 190's, and primer and brass look fine, if the accuracy is fine then I think you got a keeper.
