I recently acquired a few government surplus M14s which are in the mail. I am looking to modify one of them or a scout roll on our sniper team. We have some think woods in our area we sometimes have to track folks in and I want this weapon for quick shooter in the brush.

I am looking for suggestions on how you would set this weapon, up with the above criteria. Oh yeah...and you're a member of a police department so your budget is about $1000.

Re: M14 Modification Suggestions

There's a guy around here who posts annoying marketing brochures about his bullpup M14 stock every time someone makes a thread about M14s, he should be along shortly and that might actually be exactly what you need.

Re: M14 Modification Suggestions

lots of awsome ideas probably come out of an entire think woods, we just have think tanks here and they come up with some good stuff, why would you wanna chase down fellers gettin their think on with some crappy M14 all scaring folks and all?

is a scout roll like a jelly roll but for scouts?

Re: M14 Modification Suggestions

Would like an AR10 but with this department you get what you get.

I saw the bullpup stock and find it interesting. I'd want to put my hands on one first to check it out.

Wolven and VJJ...excuse the typos in the post, its interesting what you don't catch on the reread...and Wolven I'll take your bet. Can I say reread, as it appears you are the forum English expert?

Re: M14 Modification Suggestions

oh and btw Sheep for under 1k i would suggest you buy a EBR and set it up . I have a couple i would make you a deal on for the right price. one is a black mod1 with a CTR but stock and the other is a Navy Seal Mod 0 .

Re: M14 Modification Suggestions

OGS I appreciate your humor and reply.

The Sage is in the running for a stock. I am also looking at the carbon fiber McCann. Do you have any experience with that stock? Their shop is just down the road from me. I plan on making a trip that way Friday.

My concern is finding decent optics and staying within budget. Any suggestions?

Nice profile. </div></div>

We were all 14 once. You're pretty good at guessing ages though. That was probably taken right around when I was 14, I had completely forgotten about that game and everything, brings back good memories.

Re: M14 Modification Suggestions

That is one of the reasons i like the EBR is you can use the LaRue 608 mount on it . I have never heard of the Carbon fiber McCann sorry.

Re: M14 Modification Suggestions

Use to be a lot of folks chase bandits through "thick" woods in a far away place in the South China Sea. They use the M14 quite well.

Some use put glass on their rifles and called them XM21s, Some used them without glass.

The tacticool hangie on stuff you see on M14s today wont hack it in thick woods. They had what they called "wait-a-minute" bushes that would grab you as you came but, but that was a misnomer, cause it would take more then a minute to hack you way free.

They found standard wood stocks worked quite well. In inpregnated stocks they had on the XM21 worked exceptionaly well in the damp humid enviorment.

They may not have the "cool" look youngsters want now days but they worked and were practical for "thick woods".

In addition, the M14 is suppose to have a 22 inch barrel, with that barrel and the standard flash hider, it does just that, it hides the flash. At night, using the M14 w/ M118, there is no detectable flash. You don't get that with the chopped up so called scout rifles.

Re: M14 Modification Suggestions

I have an M1a built by Fulton Armory, It started out as a Troy stocked CQB version that weighed 12 to 14 lbs with optics and accessories. I sold the Troy and Bought the McCann Carbon Fiber stock and had it set up with a side mounted scope mount. I did not like the fit of the side mounted scope mount or how high the scope sat above the bore, So now it sits with the Carbon Stock, awaiting Iron sights.
I also thought I would like the CASM RD mount from M14.ca. A Canadian company making some interesting stocks and mounts for the m1a/m14 series of rifles.
I like the McCann stock its light and the rifle with an LMT sopmod stock, and vtac sling is about 8 lbs.

Re: M14 Modification Suggestions

I spent over a year in the woods (jungle) with a USMC-issued M-14, and I never really thought it ever needed anything more than a reliable supply of ammo. Spend the grand on some good LE .308, and be done with it.

Avoid the temptation to bubbafy it on a government expense sheet. At most, if the folks in the back of the step-in van can't handle iron sights on the fly, get a good reliable and bright dot scope on a scout mount.

When you shoot somebody with a modified gun, you can bet your sweet bippy you'll be explaining very damned mod ad nauseam while sitting in a witness chair. The only way a modified M-14 works in such places (witness chairs) is when they are bought complete/intact, as-is fully 'loaded', from a reputable Tactical Rifle vendor, and you can't afford one that way.

An M-14 carries plenty enough 'scare factor' all by itself without any Hokey Hollyweird accessories piled atop it.

And leave the selector lock intact. I had a selecter, and it had two modes, semi, and 'waste ammo'.

Re: M14 Modification Suggestions

Get a good red dot, mount, sling and light and you'll be set

Re: M14 Modification Suggestions

A tight fitting USGI 'glass stock, fresh bolt internals, shimmed GC, a good spring guide and maybe a trigger job should do you right for a small chunk of change. And of course a red dot sight or a low power (1-4x) scope if you so desire.
