Gent's,

I found this U.S. Navy Small Arms Ammunition Advancements - PDF illustrating the modern development of various cartridges - 5.56mm, 7.62mm and .300 Win Mag. The one that really caught my interest starts on page 10.

A new requirement for the 300 Win Mag to have an effective range extended from 1200 to 1500 yards. They determined the 220 gr. Sierra MatchKing .300 Win Mag has comparable accuracy and velocity retention to the 250 gr. 338 Lapua Mag.

They did conclude the 300 gr. 338 Lapua Mag does have the advantage (no surprise there). However, I'm still amazed they were able to achieve this. I'm excited as I have a 300 Win Mag and now I'm curious to try out this load.

Cheers,

That load has been out for a while, we had posts on it, and actually the load they are using, specifically will not work in most custom rifles. The only rifle I personally found to have success with it, aside from the rifles built by Crane themselves were the Accuracy Internationals. The rest of them, it was too hot.

Still its a great round for them, and the ammo I used was showing SDs in the single digits.
