savage mod 10 with 1 in 12 twist....How do you think it would be to compete with...Any suggestions for it...Appreciate it..

Re: How about the 22 250 for f class mid range

22-250 would be a great choice. I think 1 in 12 will be a bit to slow for the
heavier bullets though. Also barrel life maybe a bit of an issue. Iove 22-250
Probably my favorite round.

Re: How about the 22 250 for f class mid range

If thats what you have, then go out and shoot and have fun and see if the sport suits you.

Long term... the lighter bullets required by a 1-12" tw that allow a .22-250 to shoot so flat for varminting out to 350-400yds are going to be not so great in the wind @ 500-600. The barrel is likely to heat up pretty fast... kind of like going nuts in a prairie-dog town or ground-squirrel field

Might have to exert some self-discipline to avoid killing the barrel off prematurely.

Still... nothing you can't work around/with, and again, if its what you got, use it.

one of the locals tried 22-250 for f-class here....his bbl was so hot after his string, he had to leave it in his car running with the A/C on full blast while he was doing pit duty....just so the bbl would be cool enough for the next match when he got back

And blow liquid CO2 through it!

Re: How about the 22 250 for f class mid range

Like some others have already said, not the best choice of caliber/barrel twist, but if it's what you have right now go shoot it! You'll learn plenty trying to keep rounds on target at 500yds with a 22-250. Any experience you gain while shooting this caliber can be applied to others when you decide to get another rifle

Re: How about the 22 250 for f class mid range

We have a person who used shoot it at our mid-range matches. They are extremely competitive at that distance using 75 or 77 gr pills, if my memory is working.

They eventually moved over to a .243 to be more competitive at 1,000 yards.

I don't understand this...As the standard rules call for .223 or 308....So if the 223 works why doesn't the 22-250 work ok...

In fact I wish they obeyed the rules and got rid of some of the other calibers...Use what your supposed to use..

Re: How about the 22 250 for f class mid range

F-T/R

Caliber limited to .223 or .308 (unmodified).
Sling and/or bipod allowed.
Rifle weight limit of 8.25 kgs (approx. 18.18 lbs).

Re: How about the 22 250 for f class mid range

Rules for F-TR specifically state the .223 Remington and the. 308 Winchester.

You would compete in F-Open

Re: How about the 22 250 for f class mid range

That gun would be in F-Open shooting against 260s and what ever variety of .284 the other shooters brought, and as mentioned it's going to devour the barrel. A typical F class match you shoot 5 to 10 sighters + 20 shots for record in about 10 to 15 minutes, and at times less if the pit service is cookin'

Re: How about the 22 250 for f class mid range

260s, 7mms, and the dominating 6mm's would mop up the 22-250. If you think 6.5x284s are hard on barrels, to make a 22-250 competitive in F-open would toast a barrel quickly. If I were to run a 22 cal in F-open it would be a 22BR. At least you would be using a very very accurate parent case and be able to achieve similar velocities. However, a non competition fast twist 22-250 would be a lot of fun for long range shooting.

Re: How about the 22 250 for f class mid range

So tell me about this 22 BR you have mentioned...Is this something I could convert my 22 -250 into or not...How about the 22-250 Ackley Improved with a heavy barrel....By the way,my rifle has a varmint barrel on it now..So share your thoughts with me on this,ok...Thanks

Re: How about the 22 250 for f class mid range

One way is to download the .22-250 to .223AI velocities, but that twist will still keep you from taking advantage of the really better bullets.

The -BR calbers will fit your bolface. I would suggest 6BR or 6BRX. The HDY 6mm 105gr HPBT Match is doing very well at the kind of distances you're talking. I think the .22BR would just be too much of the same heating issue.

You'd have to rebarrel anyway. At that point, I'd suggest the same 22-250 chambering with a 1:8" twist. That way you could use the same dies with the HDY .22 75gr HPBT Match. Using the .223AI charges, you could have a winner, but full tilt boogie loads will heat you up too fast. Don't really need 'em, IMHO. Flll the case wih slower powder, go for extra barrel length, and see where it takes you. No need to whip that horse.

.223 is just shy of enough, .22-250 is just a bunch too much.
