Picked up a Fender Strat today

So I got the itch to get a new guitar to piss with, and I've had Paul Reed Smith, Gibson, Jackson and such but I've never owned a Strat.

So I picked up a $500 MIM Fender Strat and put a set of David Gilmour EMG's (DG-20) in it and this thing is just awesome. With some chorus and delay I can easily pull off the Pink Floyd sound like Run Like Hell, and then add in some overdrive for Empty Spaces.

Plus the guitar is black and has a black pick guard, so with the cream EMG's and knobs, it looks like David's Black Strat.

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

You like it better than the PRS's? Thats surprising...Ive had a couple of them and absolutely loved them. If I could only play worth a damn...............

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

I've had several PRS Custom 22's, one I had custom ordered that was a Blue Mateo, gold hardware and Artist package with Brazilian rosewood and Abalone inlays. Only one of my PRS' just seemed to have it's own personality, so to speak.

I think the Strat is just fun, because it was only $500 and the David Gilmour pickups do the cleans and lightly dirty being single-coil EMG's. The maple and radius just make bends so easy and the frets are tiny yet usable. Best $500 (aside from a gun) that I've spent in a long time!

The guy at Guitar Center really tried to push me into an American Strat, but I really couldn't tell the difference build-wise. Sure the pickups are better, but I planned to rip them out anyway and it was $300 less.

I used to work for Sam Ash Music so I had the chance to play a little bit of everything that came from Fender. Sold an ass-ton of Mexican Fenders as they were really, really good instruments. I had a MIM Tele that I sold like an idiot that was the best guitar I've ever owned. Darn thing even kept better tune than my Gibson Les Paul.

As for the MIM and MIA Strats, as far as the regular "Standard" models go, the big differences are the pickups and the hardware. The MIA hardware is a bit better if you're a tremolo user. If not, it's pretty much a wash. For the pickups, the MIA sound different, but not necessarily better. The MIM pickups were clean sounding pickups, and you can't really ask for much more than that. It's less of an issue these days since most guys aren't running a stock Strat directly into a Twin Reverb. With the prevalence of aftermarket pickups, pedals, processors, digital amps, etc., the pickup is not as important as it used to be.

And if you hate the stock pickups there's 870 alternatives out there and, if you're competent with a soldering iron, you can put them in yourself.

One of my favorite combos is one of the Classic/Reissue 50's MIM models plugged into a Blues Jr. What a wonderful sound. And if you crank it up, driving those tubes, you can get a great rock sound out of that little box.

In short, the MIM models are a hell of a bargain.

ETA: And much like guns, "it's the indian, not the arrow." Working at that music store for three years, I saw plenty of guys tear it up with a $200 Strat Pack. A lot of tone comes from the player's hands. The "purer" the signal path, the more apparent that is.

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

Actually my Eric Johnson strat is by far the nicest playing guitar I have, even better than my PRS.

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

I've always been a "Gibson guy" guitar-wise - I have a Les Paul, V, and several ESP models that are very Gibson inspired.

I finally had the opportunity to pick up an American Strat last year for a great price...

...why did I wait so long??!!

God, this guitar is fun to play - and sounds incredible!!!

For what Strat is to me, my David Gilmour EMG's are FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC. Running them through my Line 6 POD XT Live for the past two days figuring out all the nuances and sweet spots has been a lot of fun.

The one thing I get is a very bass-y low end E string for some reason. Might have to piss with my EQ.

Having those two knobs on the DG-20 set to adjust low and high and then mid with two knobs is just a dream. No more pissing with my amp's EQ...

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

I like strats, I started with a strat, but I absolutely love Gibson's, my Les Paul is a fantastic. One thing that I love about a Strat is how versatile the sound is, you can basically play any style and the Strat sounds great.

Try a stainless steel low E.

When I worked at the shop, the most common strings we sold, by far, were nickel-plated, so there's a good chance that's what you're already using. Stainless wound strings are a bit brighter while pure nickel are warmer, with nickel-plated in the middle. Coated strings (e.g. Elixirs) also tend to be on the warm side.

For the most part, I ran pure nickel on my Tele and nickel-plated on everything else.

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

Sorry for the hijack, but could you guys recommend a decent acoustic for 500 or less.

I'm feeling the urge to get back into it. I could never play for shit and I don't miss spending all my time with three guys I really didn't get along with, but my voice won't leave me alone. Guess I needed a 15yr break.

There's entirely too many good options in this category. I recommend heading to a big music store and just trying out what looks good to you and sounds the best, has the best feel in your hands, etc.

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

DG Rules! I've played an 80s Les Paul Standard for years for that 'Hammer of the Gods' tone, but always believed a Strat a la Pink Floyd and Eric Clapton was the way to go.

You motivated me to consider a Strat vice a PRS for my next axe!

CS1983 has some good advice. You really need to handle and listen to them in person. Go to a shop with a big selection, even if it means a 4 hour drive round trip. In that price range, Ibanez makes some nice guitars, but you may find something else you like. Don't be afraid to buy a used one.

When I bought an acoustic, I was dead set on buying a Martin. I was working at the shop at the time and we generally had at least a dozen in stock at any given time, and we got next stuff in every two weeks or so. For over six months I played them and couldn't find the right one. Finally, one of the guys said "Try this" and handed me a Taylor. I made my decision in about five minutes.

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

For the money in an acoustic, its hard to beat an Alvarez...

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

I've been looking at the mim strats myself seen a few in "played once" condition go for 300-350$ locally. I just sold a dean dime shadow and picked up a gibson lp studio. I love to play but i still need lots of practice before i invest in a high end axe

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

As far as inexpensive acoustic +1 on alvarez, i've got a nice lil yamaha it's a tad bit "brighter" than my buddy's ibanez

My main guitar is my MIJ Strat. I literally smile every time I pick it up and I've had it for years... That's a lot of smiles!

I've played several PRS when I was in guitar buying mode and they don't do anything for me either.

I dearly love my Eclipse 2. I have a hard time imaging the scenario where I would trade it for any Gibson.

I have a Martin DM and a Big Baby Taylor. I would recommend the Taylor to anyone looking for a less than $500 acoustic. I recently passed on the opportunity to buy a pre Peavey CA because I preferred the tone of my Taylor.

A great cheap acoustic is a company called Seagull. They are part of the Godin group, all made in Canada, and are really solid guitars.

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

I have been wanting to get my hands on a Strat for awhile. Been through a few other makes in my time. There have been two Gibson's. One a Les Paul custom Black Beauty. Neck thru construction. Damn thing was so heavy I could only play about an hour tops before I had to put it down. Other Gibson was an Explorer with Duncan Invaders. This was the perfect lap guitar. Currently have an Ibanez RG42 series that is neck through contrustion. It has very nice tones with the solid Mahogany body. Next to it is a Jackson DKMG with EMG's in it. Very bright and crunchy sound from this one but probably my favorite of the ones that I have owned and sold was my early 80's Ibanez Roadstar II. Miss that one and wish I never sold it. More of a rocker guy here. Play through an all original, never modified (other than tube replacements) 1982 Marshall JCM 800 Lead head with matching 82 JCM 800 cabinet. Turn the gain up, make the tubes glow and feel the ground shake. Love it.

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

I play a sg,les paul, strat, and tele. Through a silver face super or an orange amp. Used to have a prs and liked it. But stuck with the classics.

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

I bought a limited edition quilted maple Martin OM42 about 5 years ago. I was going to resume playing classical guitar, but the prosthetic shoulder I had installed had other ideas. So, the beautiful Martin has rested in it's case with about a half hour total playing time on it. (Yes, I did loosen the strings prior to long term storage). It is about #35 of the first 50 quilted maple special run guitars they made, and it is gorgeous.

The fender Strats have the most wonderful neck actions. I always had an affinity for guitars with "fast" necks like the strat over the wide necked gut strung classical guitars.

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

Nice bunch of discussing going on here! I agree with the Mexi-Strats being fairly decent off the wall etc.. I have played a 1978 Fender Strat that has been with original owner since purchased in Burlington, North Carolina in 1980. Compared to my 1996 Mexi-Strat, I'd take my Mexi any day. I have played many styles of music and many different electric and acoustic guitars. But to this day, my early 90's Ibanez RG with the Wizard II neck and locking Floyd Rose trem system is my fastest and smoothest playing axe. Only work I have done to it is a complete replacement of the electronics and conversion from a Humbuckers Single coil Humbucker configuration to a Double Humbucker. GFS had a good deal on the power rails and churchy rails. Despite what some would say, with proper amp settings you can achieve any tone and sound you want on that guitar. Maybe a 250 dollar bill at the used guitar store. A real diamond in the rough. And as far as amplification goes.... I used to be balls deep in Marshall. Then I got a Vox AC30 any one else use Vox and absoultly love it?

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

A Vox is deceptively good. When people ask about an amp that can do clean and crunch well it's often overlooked. Sparkly crisp cleans that take pedals well, blusey break up, to full on rock Queen style, the AC30 is one of the few classic amps that hasn't been hot rodded, it never needed it.

Re: Picked up a Fender Strat today

Acoustically, over all, Martin is one. Ive had several, D28, HD28, D 35.Im looking at a D76, like an HD with the herringbone inlay, but 5 pointed stars instead of dot on the fretboard. They only made 1776 (in 1976) of them to celebrate the 200th anniversery of the US. The guy wants $4500 and thats just out of reach right now.

I hope this doesnt violate any sort of forum rules...if it does mods just let me know and I will change it. Had'nt even thought of this but If anyones interested Ive got a PRS Custom 24 sunburst 10 top with bird inlays and gold hardware Il looking to part with. Either cash or a trade for something of value. Not reallly looking for more firearms at the moment, but open to offers on most anything.. Mabey Ill list it over in the for sale section as well. If interested pm me and send an address and I can send photos etc.
