6.5 Creed better than .308 check these loads?

I know alot of guys are in really liking the 6.5 creed round over the old .308 for comps and shooting to a 1,000 yards. Help me understand comparing these loads.

6.5 creed load

140 Amax
FGMM 210's
42.9 H4350
COAL 2.825 (.007-.010 jump)
Velocity - 2850

.308 load

155 scenar
45.5 IMR 4895
210 primer
2.805 coal
velocity-2995

Seems to me the .308 should be better to a 1,000.
what am I missing?

Re: 6.5 Creed better than .308 check these loads?

Besides the fact that I have personally seen a 6.5CM stomp hell out of a 308?

I can't speak for the 140AMax but the 142SMK is balistically superior to the 155 Scenar. I expect the 140Amax is as well. Velocity is a pretty relative thing and isn't the ultimate factor in the equation.

To put it in layman's terms the 155 Scenar doesn't have enough ass for its bore size.

Re: 6.5 Creed better than .308 check these loads?

I basically shoot both of those loads you listed, except I use the 155 SMK. The only difference I've noticed is recoil and maybe a slight windage advantage to the 6.5. Other than that I'm getting rid of the 6.5 and going 6mm Creedmoor. But keeping my .308.

Re: 6.5 Creed better than .308 check these loads?

You are missing what is called ballistic coefficient...Read, read and learn. 260 has a rather large ballistic superiority over all 30 calibers in short action weights.

Re: 6.5 Creed better than .308 check these loads?

So basically the .308 being a fatter round doesn't cut the wind as well as a smaller diameter round? Also a longer bullet cuts the wind better?

Why can't a more efficient .308 round be manufactured? Has the .308 reached it's ballistic coefficient limits?

It can, they just weight in at over 200 grains before the BC of the 308 can match the 6.5 and the 308 just doesn't have the case to push those very fast. That weight is more for the 30-06 / 300WM and ALOT more recoil and expensive bullets.

Re: 6.5 Creed better than .308 check these loads?

Have you verified that your actual velocity with the 155 is 2995 fps and that it is safe?

Re: 6.5 Creed better than .308 check these loads?

Litz G7 for the 155gr Scenar is .234
Litz G7 for the 140gr Amax is .299

At 500' ASL/standard atmosphere, a 155gr @ 2995 has 8.5 mil drop, 2.5mil drift @ 1000yd...the 140gr @ 2850 has 8.3mil drop and 2.0mil drift.

Difference is 9.4" elevation and 18.8" drift.

Re: 6.5 Creed better than .308 check these loads?

Checking the drop is one way to look at it but the wind is what tends to trip up the vast majority of us. Drop is less of a concern but that wind call can make or break your day.

Thats not my load, info for the loads came from the reloading depot here on the hide.

Even with the numbers given the 6.5 wins. Given more realistic numbers, the 6.5 wins by even more. 2995 fps with the 155 would be a hot handload in a 30" barrel. 2850 fps with the 140 is factory ammo out of a 26" barrel. Not a fair comparison, even though the 6.5 wins regardless.

Re: 6.5 Creed better than .308 check these loads?

I will eventually be ordering a 6.5 Creed upper for my gap 10 sounds like.

Re: 6.5 Creed better than .308 check these loads?

The 6.5 creedmoor is the most impressive round I have been around! I have shot it in a quiet a few different rifles from sweet custom bolt guns and custom AR-10 to stock savage rifles and all have shot extremely well! The 6.5cm 140 grain hornady Amax is the most impressive factory ammo I have seen!!

Re: 6.5 Creed better than .308 check these loads?

any of the 6.5X47 lapua, 6.5 creedmoor, 260 remington is better than any 308 load past 800yds.
nuff said.

Re: 6.5 Creed better than .308 check these loads?

Think of this. The .260 is just about neck to neck as the creedmore with performance. Ok, the 308 and 260 have the same case. So, with the 260 you are shooting lighter bullets= more velocity. Then, those lighter and faster bullets have a higher BC. So, you have a cartridge that now has less drop and less wind drift because the bullet leaves the bbl at a higher rate of speed and maintains it more because of the higher BC. Less time in the air means less time for wind and gravity to effect it. Hope I'm right and hope you understand it. Good luck

Re: 6.5 Creed better than .308 check these loads?

The other thing to keep in mind with the 6.5 is you are getting better ballistic performance at lower recoil therefore you get faster follow up shots it is a great competition round for that reason. Screaming out scenars from a .308 or pushing 208 amaxes to the limit are two weighs to try and patch the .308 up to compete ballistically and thoose loads require a good reloader to push the envelope with. The comparision I did was with a 168gr smk i.e. FGMM vs the hornady 140gr amax factory load past 400 yards the 140 beats it in every way i could think to measure includling energy on target the only the the 168 would win on is a 1mm larger entry hole. I love my .308 but I have one 6.5 and am buildling another
