Well the Fed Ex man just dropped off my new rifle built by Moon at Crescent Customs. Feels like classic Moon work which is to say EXCELLENT! Now I have to get working up some .243 loads with the Hornady 105 BTHP.

Need a barrel vice too. Any recommendations on a reasonable price model?

Popped some quick pics for you guys.

Specs:
Surgeon 591 repeater
Manners T3 with mini chassis in molded in woodland pattern
Bartlein barrels: 26" 8.5 twist .243 with Badger Thruster brake and 26" 10 twist .308. Both M24/40 contour.
Timney trigger set at 2.5lbs

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Nice setup, Moon does some amazing work.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Very nice rig!! Wheeler Engineering makes a pretty good vice.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

just out of curiosity why did you go with the 1:8.5 twist ? it seems like every one has been going with the 8 or 7.5. i am going to be ordering a new barrel for my .243 and am contemplating which twist to get mostly i just want to shoot the 105,107, and 108 vld's
but wouldn't mind trying out a 115 DTAC

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Rob,
I understand how a switch barrel rifle works, but I am not sure I see how it would be realistically used. Not trying to be an ass, just want to know why / how often you see changing between 243 and 308. It would be interesting to see how close it returns to zero.
Thanks.

And in my experience they usually return to within a .2-.3 mil (if not closer) of the previous POI.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Rob, very nice! I especially like the stock choice, I think it is a very nice all around stock.

Adam and other users of the Brownells vice do you have any issues with it taking the finish off?

+1000

I'm just about ready to take some components down to Moon to do a switch barrel set-up from a .22-250AI GAP rifle I already have to add a .243 barrel. Maybe a .308 in the future as well.
Rob- Moon showed me a barrel vise on ghey-bay for around $80. He also suggested an action wrench from PT&G. Good looking set-up brother. He was working on it the last time I stopped in.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Thankls all and thanks for the vice recommendations. Will look into them. I got a Surgeon action wrench so just the vice is needed.

Tim, the .243 will be used for matches and the .308 barrel will also be used for .308 only of if I get to some F Class matches. I have another .308 that I use as a practice rifle. I don't care if the zeero is the same as I will rezero before shooting either in a match anyways.

Family man, I went with 8.5 twist as I will be shooting the 105 BTHP exclusively so a faster twist wasn't needed. I have a Bartlein 7.7 barrel here that i just need to be chambered and screwed on it those plan change.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

nice build rob, looks like it will be a awesome piece. the more i shoot the more i like the prospect of a nonadjustable lighter weight stocked rifle... maybe soon

No. Just tape it off and torque it down tight and you will be fine.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

I use thin malleable copper sheets or the synthetic pad material for vise jaws. I have also used tape. Anything that provides a barrier saves your finish.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Is this out of the Bieber series?

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Very nice rifle man. Soooo, what differences are there between a standard rifle and a switch barrel rifle? The only thing that comes to mind is a pinned recoil lug.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

No difference really, except for the other barrel
wink.gif
, but especially with the Surgeon 591, which has the recoil lug as part of the overall action. You can see it here http://www.surgeonrifles.com/591

The recoil lug is not a seperate part which is pinned like other systems or a Remington can be. Most custom actions now have single or double pinned recoil lugs so you can easily use them as a swicth barrel.

This is my first switch barrel but I figured I would go with the Surgeon to make it that much easier.

Poison, ah no.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Both are M24/40 contour Bartleins.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

One of the best looking switch hitters I've seen LOL.

That is a nice rifle Rob, and that stock is what I'll be likely getting for my next project.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Switch barrel rigs intimidate some people, but I have been pleased with mine. Good looking gun there.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Very nice Rob! I'm interested in knowing how the switch barrel setup works for you.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

This is my third time visiting this thread looking at the pics of your rifle. Seriously nice - even though the bolt is on the wrong side of the gun ;-)

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Thanks but the bolt is on the "right" side except for you wrong hand shooters lol

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

This is almost exactly what i have been planning on doing. Great looking setup! Any idea on the weight?

Thanks. Weight as shown with bipod is 13 pounds according to my scale. Will probably come in around 16.5 pounds with stock pack, sling and scope and rings.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

And you did it without a chassis system! Very nice.

Looks even better with your Schmidt and Seekins rings. I bought my fist S&B (3-20) in large part due to your many positive posts about Schmidt scopes. Can't say I'm sorry; best glass I've owned, zose schneaky Germans.

Here is one for ya with the bolt on the correct side! LOL!

The barrel on the gun is a .308win. M24/M40 contour. The other barrel I have for it is a .260 Rem. barrel. Rem. varmint modified contour. Why did I make two different barrels/switch gun. If shooting a match like Rob said if it was mandatory for .308win. was one reason but if not I'll take the 6.5mm any day. Also the mod. Rem. varmint contour is 1.4# lighter.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Nice rifle, Frank! Good to see another properly-handed shooter out there

Rob, that is a really nice looking rifle that Moon spun up for you. Congrats on a piece like that.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Frank,

Great looking rifle! Is swapping barrels on the Badger M2008 difficult? Is it something I can do in my garage with a vise?

Thanks,

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Anyone know the approximate wait time at CC right now?

Take the barreled action out of the stock, remove bolt and I put the barrel in the barrel bushings/block/vise and put the action wrench on the receiver and knock the barrel loose. Unscrew barrel.

Take the other barrel put in barrel vise attach action wrench etc...and tighten the other barrel onto the receiver.

Reassemble gun. Total time? I don't know, 20min.

Once the barrel is threaded and chambered etc...it's just a matter of taking it off and putting the other one on. Headspace shouldn't change at all. I still double check it with the gauges usually but not all the time.

I put my scope back on. I wrote down any difference in elevation/windage between the barrels and first round is pretty much on the money!

As long as you got an action wrench and a barrel clamp/vise that won't scratch/mar up the barrel your good to go. You can do it in the garage. There is really nothing to it.

You will have to ask Moon. You can get ahold of him either by phone or email. His work number is 816-841-9322 or email at [email protected]

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

No biggie. Just wondering and he's busy enough. I have a couple of builds there right now and me bothering him won't change when they get here.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Thought you were sending one in. Took about 2.5 months for this one.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Very nice setup. I'm planning a switch barrel as well. .308 and .260

Although i have another consideration. In the Netherlands you can own only 5 guns. So i go for quality and versatility.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

Defusion the switch barrel would be the way to go for sure there. One gun but many calibers
wink.gif

I am actually waiting for a Bartlein 6.5mm barrel to come in and this set up will have a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel on it as well.

Re: New Crescent Custom switch barrel arrived

This has given me an idea. (May want to run. My wife does when i get ideas) I have 2 Sako TRG M995 receivers at CC right now for 2 builds. I also have all 3 bolt face sizes for those receivers. I would just need anther barrel (which is already on order with Bartlein for another build), action wrench from KRG and barrel vise and I can make both into a switch hitters with that 1 barrel.

Sound feasible?

Nice rig btw. Can't wait for mine from CC.

That is one sexy beast. Rob01, what you did to this rifle (photoshoping it right-handed) borders on blasphemy!
