this is what all the primers look like in any round i shoot to include remington 150 gr cor locked, winchester super x 150 gr power points, pmp 150 gr psp and those in the pic were 168gr sierra match kings over 42gr of varget with federal 210m primers

Re: sps tactical flattening primers

Looks the same as mine. Firing pin hole is known to be a bit large and you will get some cratering effects because of it.

Re: sps tactical flattening primers

the cratering i'm not worried about, according to the rem tech support guy that's by design. so this isn't abnormal flattening?

Have you ever actually seen a flattened primer?? Those ARE NOT flattened primers.

Re: sps tactical flattening primers

After market firing pin assembly with resolve that issue. Brownells sells a complete kit form Pierce and will result in better results in every manner

Re: sps tactical flattening primers

I have flattened primers from day one in my SPS. Doesn't matter what round is shot through my SPS. I reload 45.8 grains of Varget with a 175 smk. I've been running that load for over a year with zero problems.

Drive on...

That will not change a thing as far as cratering is concerned. A primer craters due to the cup material flowing into the firing pin hole in the bolt face. Unless the new pin is oversized (which the Pierce IS NOT...nor is any other) the issue will persist. If indeed there is a crater issue, the proper solution is to have the FP bushed.

OP...do not be confused, this IS NOT an issue that you need to fix in your SPS...it just another example of a cyber-wizard attempting to show off irrelevant information.

Re: sps tactical flattening primers

Right on, dont worry about the crater. My sps craters subsonics. It also craters primed cases I bet lol. Just the way the firing pin and bolt is. No big deal really. I have put several thousand rounds through the rifle. Accuracy is great, not issues whatsoever. Hell, the mark makes it easy to keep the brass for the bolt gun separate from the gasser lol.

No pierced primers or anything here.

IF you really want to, bush the bolt, but honestly I'd not sweat it if it is working well.

As far as flattened primers, I still see nice rounded edges on those primers, so I'd say keep shooting. No flats there.

Re: sps tactical flattening primers

they are not leaking gasses, piercing or falling off so no problem. they are not reusable and will need new ones put in now.
no worries.

Re: sps tactical flattening primers

i'm new to the reloading game and what i saw on a video made me think these were flattened primers, appreciate you guys setting me straight and easing my worries. i've shot a LOT up till now but i didn't reload so i didn't look at them too closely as long as they were still there and didn't have a hole in them.

tl;dr noob re-loader here over analyzing stuff

Re: sps tactical flattening primers

Keep shooting, your ok. If you start popping primers then start looking at why, for now go shoot

Re: sps tactical flattening primers

Definitely not flat, as others have said. You'll know when they are flat. I stole this pic to give you an idea of one.

Re: sps tactical flattening primers

If you're ever freaked out about the look of your primers, you can have your firing pin bushed and it should take care of most worries. From what I understand, at least...

Re: sps tactical flattening primers

i would like to point out that when i pop out the primers they have a slight lip around the top (not anvil side)

Re: sps tactical flattening primers

If you had a problem with over pressure, the radius that you on the outer edges would be a square almost sharpe.
