I am sure many of you know that "Red Dawn" was remade, but hasn't been released. It portrayed Chinese Communists invading America, with a plot line similar to the origional.
But why hasn't it been released?

I'll tell you why......The Chinese Communists complained!

Seems they took offense to being portrayed as aggressive Moaist communists bent of world domination.

So the movie is being reedited to try and make Communist North Korea the bad guys. Not very plausi ble, and since shooting was already wrapped long ago and the budget spent, the reedit is not successful. So the scraps are sitting in cans and it looks like if the movie ever does come out it will likely be such a terrible disappointment it may never come out.

Re: New "Red Dawn"

Don't cry Matty, don't you ever cry again. Just hold it in and let it turn into something else. LOL

Re: New "Red Dawn"

Well fuck them for kowtowing if that is in-fact the case. Editing it for some PC reason goes against the views of most of their potential audience anyway.

Re: New "Red Dawn"

As someone with first hand knowledge on this film , I can tell you that this is really misleading. It was a troubled production from the start and never really got off the ground in 2009. Work was started but production was cancelled for a variety of reasons. The script had huge problems and while there were concerns about the Chinese reaction, these were at the bottom of the list of problems. There ultimately wasn't a decent way to modernize the story. It was written to become a franchise with this film really only touching on the events in the first half of the original.

So don't believe everything you hear in partisan circles.

You realize Dogtown that you're the unofficial Hollywood spy for the Sniper's Hide. I always enjoy getting the inside scoop on movies when you chime in on threads. Keep those juicy tidbits coming!

And I, for one, am fucking PISSED that we won't be seeing a Red Dawn redux any time soon. Man I love that movie.

Re: New "Red Dawn"

Such a classic!

"All that hate's gonna burn you up, Son."

"It just keeps me warm."

I'm usually not a fan of remakes either. It would be interesting to tie this kind of theme into a SHTF series - Red Dawn being the first and then launch into a James Wesley, Rawles "Patriots/Survivors" thing

I goes both ways - I'm working on "The Avengers" right now and just pointed out that one of the modelers built a beautifully accurate M4 model for a digital double - with the mag upside down

Re: New "Red Dawn"

Haha, well, if you hadn't told them, we'd all be bitching about it when the movie comes out... See, the Sniper's Hide is beginning to play a significant, if unrecognized, role in pop culture.

The series always confused me, (but not as much as The Prisoner")and the recent Avenger's movie, even with Uma Thurman and Sean Connery, totally sucked ass.
Why Hollywood insists on making another is beyond me.
But remakes and sequels is about all they are capable of.Very little creativity there now, despite the flood of movies every year.

I blame the drug culture for stifling the creative process.

I'm afraid it has nothing to do with lack of creativity. People really have no idea how much cool stuff is just fighting to make it to the big screen, but the reality is movies are REALLY expensive gambles with very little predictability and right now the studios are EXTREMELY risk averse. So they are trying to do projects that they feel have a reasonable return on investment which means something familiar to draw in crowds: remakes and sequels.

The risk takers are almost exclusively in the indie field or premium networks (HBO, Showtime, etc).

Oh,that Avengers, where they collect up all the primary comic strip charatcers from the last 10 years and put them in one movie together. Like the "Super Best Friends".
I guess it's all right to blow up New York in a movie as long as it's not Muslims or Chinese (or Bill Ayers) doing it.

'But what about the Genvea convention?!'

'I NEVER HEARD OF IT! hahahahahahahahahaha

So we weren't worried about pissing off Russians and Cubans originally?
I heard all kinds of rumors about the remake. I was really hoping it would happen and it WOULD be good....... however.
Oh well. Maybe they can just re-release the original in 3D? So we can et commie killing action we can 'touch'

Re: New "Red Dawn"

Well, if you lived in that evil liberal bastion of Hollywood like I did, you would have gotten to see it from time to time at the Aero Theater or the New Beverly. Each time they had a Q&A with someone who worked on it after the film.

Re: New "Red Dawn"

I don't care about all the crap that's been going on with the movie. I'll see it when it comes out just because the original was one of my favorite movies growing up.

I'm sure it'll suck and I'll be pissed.... But whatever...

Re: New "Red Dawn"

Red Dawn is the perfect movie to remake right now. So many great scenes in that movie. One of the first things they do is corral weak local leaders(the mayor) to lend legitimacy to their occupation. The russians seek out and find gun owners through FFL records in order to stop an insurgency before it starts (good luck with that).
It shows the value of infornation in bad times, and the value of being prepared if the grocery stores dont restock for awhile.
Probably a good case to be made that the F-15 pilot in Red Dawn is why I ended up in the Air Force.

Re: New "Red Dawn"

Oh yeah, I had heard something about the Chinese angle offending Sony or something like that. Wouldnt surprise me either way.

They did the same PC crap when they made Tom Clancy's "Sum of All Fears." In the book Islamic terrorists attack the super bowl but in the movie it is neo-nazis of some sort. Guess it is a lot easier on the Hollywood execs to beat up on white guys. Why change the villains? Are neo-nazis really the threat nowadays? Guess they didnt want to give islam a bad name.

If you read what I posted earlier, you'll see that this was the least of the film's problems, but for political reasons it's the only thing anyone talks about. Sony is Japanese, by the way

Again, when viewed through a political lens, this makes sense, but in reality it's far more complicated than that. When adapting the story, the producers decided that the original material was unrealistic and implausible. On top of that, with 9/11 there was a question of whether people would flock to the theaters to see a film about an Islamist attack on American soil barely a year after a real one just happened. You have to remember that movies are very expensive gambles and the more expensive they get, the more risk averse the studios producing them become. That's why the lower budget indie films are often the ones taking risks, making films that may only appeal to a niche audience.

The easy, short-sighted way to look at it is PC liberal pandering. The more accurate way to look at it is wise business decisions.

Re: New "Red Dawn"

One one side I think they should have left this one alone as a classic. On the other side.. hopefully there's a still a few kids left who know how to field fix their old pickup truck and kick some tail who might just appreciate it. The ones who got given the new Lexus for their sweet sixteen just won't get it!!

If PC wasn't crawling up the Chinese asses, then why is the invading force now North Korean?

They aren't because the film was abandoned (ie never finished). It was one of the many options they considered part-way into production to solve a number of problems with the story.

Riiiiight. I'll take "American Muslim" for 200 Alex.

Sounds nice and low risk right?

I could do this all day....easiest argument to find evidence for I would ever have to make. Wanna keep going?

I will reserve final judgment till the movie comes out, but at first blush, North Korea having the logistics to carry out an attack on the US seems like a much bigger story problem than China (who also doesn't have the logistics to do this, but is MUCH closer) saying, "This is what you get for interfering with Taiwan."

Re: New "Red Dawn"

I read a news story saying the Chinese govt. bought the film so it would not be aired. It was Pretty depressing as I was looking forward to it. Looks like maybe it is coming out after all

But I agree North Korea, or the American Govt. would be a better Red Dawn 2

I'll still be seeing the film due to Isabel lucas's appearance.

Re: New "Red Dawn"

Ill see it...... A storyline, really? Just make it about surviving the ordeal.

Nope. Like I said earlier, it was a troubled production from the start.
